Installation issues / Re: Existing NAS Media?
« on: September 28, 2007, 02:07:32 am »
Ooo - I think I might have sorted it! Followed the instructions here:

http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=1694.msg7919#msg7919

and manually added the NAS share - I can only assume its working cos when I resynced the media I now get a VERY big list of the files its detecting. I'm gonna leave it overnight and report in the morning!  ;D

Did a search, but found nothing untoward... This is a bit strange though - in the webadmin media file sync bit I can see this:

Do I need to do anything here? The videos, pictures etc lists all have the same 2 items in them? Whats really odd is that when I ssh into the /home/public/data/audio directory, I can see that it has made 2 alias (I presume) files, but when you go to the address they refer to, theres no directory. In fact, theres nothing below /mnt/device:

Sorry for the images, but I'm sure that my terminology is wrong!

I can only think of file permissions, but the Public share has everything opened up for all users, so LMCE should surely have no problem creating whatever directories it feels like?

Do a search on the NAS for "public" or "user1" to see if they are created in some other weird place, shouldn't happen, but...

Ok, noob questions: how do I do a search? Where are the NAS folder in Linux?

Right then - I unlocked everything and deleted the 2 Maxtor devices, then restarted the core. I installed the MSS-0209FF device, ignored the config fileshare, installed the public fileshare, and told LMCE to use its own directory structure. I also ignored the Maxtor NAS device.

Now when I go into the Media > File Sync screens, theres another option called "Windows Share: Public" or something like that in each of the data subtrees (i.e. video, audio etc), with 0Mb in each. In the video subtree, I chose LMCE Video Files from the dropdown menu, and clicked add to database - I did the same in the audio subtree (except chose LMCE Audio Files).

It hasn't generated any folders on the drive, so I went into the Public share (from Vista) and created /data/audio and copied a folder full of MP3s into it. So now my NAS directory tree looks like:

\Public\data\audio\Artic Monkeys\ [mp3 files]

I cant change the first folder name, but I don't know if the uppercase 'P' is stumping LMCE? Something is though, cos its not discovering any MP3 files... I tried to rip a CD to the NAS, was allowed to choose the NAS drive but ripping it failed. It couldn't create the specified subdirectory. Do you think that might be to do with user permissions or something like that? Or have a done it all wrong?

I have no idea what I'm doing here, I just feel like I'm flailing round in the dark... I also discovered a username and password box in the MSS-0209FF device area on the webadmin site, so have put in the admin u&p for the hard drive, which I haven't had to do before for any reason, but I thought it couldn't hurt.

Are there any logs or anything that I could look at and post on here so someone can isolate whats going wrong?  ??? ??? ???

Yeah, the "two" devices are both on different internal IPs - I think that the MSS-0209FF device is discovered on 192.168.80.252 and the Maxtor NAS is on 192.168.80.253 (or vice versa). So I just tell LMCE to ignore the second one then? OK.

Thanks! I'll give this a go at lunch time and report back.

One other thing, when the device is initially recognised, it tells me its found a MSS-0209FF (the NAS product name) and installs it. Then it tells me about the shares it finds and installs them. A little while later, it tells me its found a Maxtor NAS on a different IP address - I've been telling MCE to install it, but it finds no shares on it anyway so its defunct. Why does LMCE pick 1 NAS up as 2 different devices?

...then tell LMCE to "find" it...

How do you do that?

I'm thinking that if it solves the problem of my NAS media being undetectable, it might just be worthwhile using LMCEs directory structure and be done with it... I suppose I can just hope and pray that Windows will still be able to see it!

Has there been any further developments with this? I must admit that reading through the thread has made me rather excited by the prospect of using my wiimote to control LMCE!

Well I can't even find my files, or the NAS, despite LMCE telling me that the shares have been installed etc. They're certainly not appearing in the Media > Audio or Media > Video lists through the UI, and when I go through the Web Admin bit to Files and Media, I can't see any new files anywhere!

If I remove the device, redetect it, and tell it to use LMCE's directory structure, will it remove any files from the NAS? Also, if I do that, will I be able to see the files I put into the newly created /public/data/video folders from a Windows PC?

OK, clicked on data -> resync - is that going to sync the NAS too? It looks like it just does the HDD in the Core? I got a nice new window that said:

Code: [Select]
sudo -u root /usr/pluto/bin/UpdateMedia -d "/home/public/data"

01 09/26/07 22:01:04.155 Cannot find self in maplock! (0x80b07b4) (>2) alarm: AlarmManager.cpp:102  <0xb6b2cb90>

One thing I have noticed is a little red flashing square in the top-left of the LMCE list screens every now and again - what does that mean? Also, I keep getting an alert message popup telling me that "existing device already enabled MSS 0209FF" (which is my NAS name), followed by "done with new file server added", or something like that. Why does it keep doing that? Lastly, in my shared folders on the NAS there are loads of subfolders that contain the actual music/video files - thats not going to stump LMCE is it? I assume its scans subfolders for media too?

Hmmmm... I chose the other option as it said that it was best for drives that had existing media and was used by Windows too (my main machine that uses the drive runs Vista).

When I go to Files & Media > Media Files Sync I see a blank screen with a tree file system down the left panel. Where do I navigate to to resync the NAS?

God I hate feeling so dum - hope I get to grips with LMCE soon so I can stop posing such noob questions!  ;)

Installation issues / [SOLVED] Existing NAS Media?
« on: September 26, 2007, 10:04:30 pm »
Two problems down (ish), heres another one that I need some help with please!

I have a Maxtor NAS attached to the internal network (192.168.80.*) which LMCE picked up fine - good start! It then proceeds to pick up the 2 shares on the drive, 1 which I ignored as its full of config data and nothing else, and the other which I added as it has subdirectories containing a LOT of ripped audio (all MP3s) and video files (mainly divx AVI's). So far so good.

My problem arises when I come to actually view some of the content on the NAS. LMCE hasn't populated any of the media lists, so when I click on video I can only see the sample ripped DVD that I've been playing with during install - and theres nothing at all in the audio one! How do I get LMCE to fill these lists? I thought that it would scan the NAS and add the files automatically?

Thanks, I'll try that when I get home later - but does this mean that I'm permanently gimped to using a mouse AND keyboard? How come the on-screen UI isn't appearing when I click a button?  ???

Installation issues / No mouse control during movie playback
« on: September 25, 2007, 01:26:12 am »
OK guys, I've got an interesting one for you! After battling with LMCE to get it installed and running, I finally get through to the lovely alpha-blended UI showing the nice fading pics. So I go ahead and stick in a DVD (I've already installed DVD CSS and the codec pack as suggested during the setup process) which plays wonderfully and automatically. Great, thinks I, as I go to check a different chapter, only to find that no matter which button I press on my mouse - nothing happens! The closest thing I get to recognition that I'm doing anything is if I right click I can see the 4-way arrowed crosshair thing for a fraction of a second before it disappears again.

I'm using an old Logitech wireless mouse, but have also tried it with a wired MX518, which did exactly the same thing. The only way (that I've found) to stop the DVD is to CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE and reboot the machine. I thought that it might be the DVD, so have tried 3 that have all done the same thing. I've also ripped one to the hard drive and tried playing that back, but have encountered the same.

Help!?!  :'(
