Hey, if it'll help, I'm using it's little brother, the AN-M2. I'm connecting via DVI to my Olevia 32" LCD, and the only thing I had to change on the install routine was the following:

- burned LinuxMCE Quick Install DVD.
- set amount of memory to be used by the video card in the bios. I set mine for 256mb, don't know if it'll help, but no complaints yet.
- set CD to boot first in bios, save and exit.
- let it run. This took a while. If the panel goes blank, don't worry, just shake the mouse or hit an arrow on your keyboard.
- ran into no avwizard bug, solved by logging in (user: linuxmce, pass: linuxmce) and used "cd /etc/X11" and "sudo mv xorg.conf.pluto.avwizard xorg.conf". This is the hardest part, since it is constantly flickering back and forth between the main screen and some other garbage. Try doing it in bursts, it helps. This must be done quickly, because after a few minutes, you can't type anything and you must reboot and try again.
- wait for a bit, screen will flicker, then set it at 800x600 and 50hz for the panel, plus UI2 medium (no alpha, that flickers on screen) on the prompts that follow.
- after making it through the wizard, wait some more. screen will go black, dialog will come up, stuff starts downloading. let it download everything and build the panel. Strange thing is, you'll have no indicator of progress until it actually starts building the orbiter, so just be patient, it doesn't take too long.
- once the orbiter finished building and I got the OpenGL error, I restarted the machine.
- hit esc at the grub prompt, entered recovery mode.
- logged in, typed "startx" to get kde going.
- downloaded envy (just google 'envy nvidia'), saved to disc.
- follow instructions listed in that site's FAQ for install
- Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to dump out of X once installed
- type the following command..."dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg"
- set up everything pretty much to the defaults, with the following changes...set driver to 'nvidia' (not nv or vesa!), set the memory to be used by the videocard in kb (mine was 2097152 for 256 MB, just google xxx MB to kb in google to convert), and make sure your preferred screen size is selected (I had to add 1280x768 to my selection, three of the lower sizes are pre-selected by default). Let it write and autodetect whatever it needs to, you should be fine.
- it'll write to xorg.conf and make you a backup. woo hoo, you're almost home free.
- type "vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf"
- If you know vi, then add the following (if you don't, shift+R lets you edit, arrow keys move you around, and esc stops editing...once done, hit shift+Z+Z to save)
     Option     "UseEdidDpi"     "false"
     Option     "NoLogo"          "true"
- That's it! A little bit of pain, but so worth it. As soon as you restart, the software will detect the change in screen resolution, rebuild the orbiter, and you're just about ready to go. If you have any more issues (can hear but not see video prompts, dvd's come up jarbled) here are the two actions that you will find the most helpful:

A) WAIT. Sometimes it takes a second, don't get button-happy. I kept on getting kicked into KDE after trying to reach the advanced settings panel, and it turns out it was just my own fault for being too impatient to come up (the button for KDE desktop on the next screen was in the same place as the advanced button on the main menu, so it was just doing what I asked it to...)

B) NEVER UNDERSTIMATE THE HEALING POWER OF A GOOD REBOOT. Sometimes it finished installing devices and just restarting the router isn't enough. Give it the one-finger salute back to good health, and you'll see that it'll work a lot better the next time around.

Hope that helps!

I'll try rebooting the router while it's up, but yeah, so far no success.

18
That's a safety indicator to show that there's still power to the board. Some installers will attempt to do things that they shouldn't while a board still has juice going to it, thus an indicator.

19
Wiped and rebuilt it, same issue. Checked my main router, turned off the firewall, same result. Any ideas, folks?

20
Well, I think I broke it, I can't be sure. Can't log into the admin page unless I'm doing it from the main box, so down it goes.

Also, if you want to get rid of the logo, do this...

cd /etc/X11

vi xorg.conf

Go down to 'devices' section, check that the driver is listed as 'nvidia', not 'vesa' or 'nv', and do the following:

hit shift R on your keyboard, add the following lines before the end of the section...

     Option     "NoLogo"          "true"
     Option     "UseEdidDpi"     "false"

Hit esc, then hold down shift and type ZZ.

Reboot and you should be good to go, no logo, no weird font issues, no muss no fuss.

ah, try this...

do the esc to enter recovery mode, then dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

-or-

dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

One way or another, select in your proper screen resolution and you should be back in the game.

I used the Envy subversion technique to get my box running as well, and to those who said 'why'...because we had to, duh. The default detection scheme doesn't always work for everybody, get over it.

Installation issues / Orbiters broken...can't seem to connect to dcerouter
« on: September 26, 2007, 04:24:04 am »
Don't know what happened today, got my first orbiter up and running, sat back, ripped a disc, had a great time. Went and rebooted the box, now the orbiter won't connect for anything, and even reinstalling the orbiter package on my tablet PC gives the same "Failed to Connect" loop.

Any ideas before I format this thing and start over?

Sell the 19" panel it comes with, buy more storage, done!

Has the AMD 4000 dual core chip, a sleek looking case, and onboard nvidia 6150 graphics, although for $50 more, you can add the 8300gs to it (which might help in driver detection, giving you an easier install).

Hey, for the show I'd love to cycle through images from the Make photo pool. Anyone know how to change the default flickr channel to another? Thanks!

Finally got the board up and running today, and I have a reliable install routine. I figured out that the key was to interrupt the process at a specific point before it started installing everything so that I could shoehorn the Envy installer in before LMCE broke everything.

Anyways, I'm going to make a disc image (just in case, since it took so long to get a reliable routine up and running), so if someone mimics my hardware, it should be pretty easy for them to get up and going.

Waiting on more parts, but that bit of good news means that the demo is on, and it should be a good show.

maybe one of those had a solution or some help.
sometimes searching in here is better than heading straight to google.

None of those really contain any solutions, just people reporting trouble. The only thing I saw in there that looked like advice was one guy installing off of the CDs instead of the DVD.

Installation issues / Nvidia Install Tips Needed
« on: September 18, 2007, 02:04:11 am »
Hey guys, I've pretty much ran out of things to try and I still can't get my MCE 100% due to it always failing in the installation of the nvidia drivers. Any tips would be appreciated, I've been trying it for three days with no success.

Problem I think is related to my panel, which needs a 1280x720 resolution @ 50 mhz to work. Somehow the std. 720p option isn't available on the VGA select on the wizard, and it doesn't automatically install the nvidia driver.

Any help appreciated, thanks. One board I've tried has the 6xxx onboard graphics, the other has the 7xxx and I've got it set at 256mb in the bios for video memory.

Think I'm about to give up on this board. Got it running well on UI1, but UI2's not being cooperative. Probably going to switch boards today to the ECS GeForce6100SM-M I've got laying around here today.

I don't count the time as a loss, though. Learned quite a bit about xorg.conf and how to use vi, but since the newer board won't do UI2 w/ alpha blending, that's a showstopper.

Doing the swap out today, and we'll have a major build day on Wed. as well with the volunteers that will be manning the booth.

Still haven't heard from Cisco, Fiire, or Paul for that matter.

Users / Re: Suggestion for AM2 mainboard?

I'm having a beast of a time with the little brother of the board you chose (AN-M2). I've got the video driver up and rolling, but still don't have UI2 yet. Here's how I did it:

Install from Quick Install Disc.
You'll get the router prompt, so be ready for it. Go ahead and log in (u: linuxmce p: linuxmce).
sudo -s
wget NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run
sh NVIDIA*.run
Follow the prompts, saying no to the 'search for blah blah module' and yes to 'I'm gonna have to build it from scratch, is that ok?'
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Follow the prompts, most of them can be OK'd through. Make sure your monitor resolution is right (or one notch below). Once done...
nvidia-xconfig
That'll give it the nvidia touch, then...
cd /etc/X11
vi xorg.conf
Go to the last line under 'Devices', press 'Shift' and 'r' and add...
Option "NoLogo" "true" --> More of a personal taste, this one's optional.
Option "UseEDIDDpi" "false"
Edit the monitor resolution, if you need to at this time. I had to in order to drop down from 1280x768 to 1280x720 for my panel.
Press 'Esc' to stop your edit and hold down 'Shift' and type 'zz' to save.
startx
KDE should start up.
If everything's working, great. At this point, I went and downloaded Envy to make sure it got installed.
Activate AVWizard upon reboot from Linux MCE Launch Manager (it's under the Video tab, once everything finishes what it's doing).
You may need to click like crazy to close out the other things that are going on (main setup wizard will try to start, etc.).
Select UI2 without transparency (supposedly, this has some nasty flickering if you select the alpha blending).
Once done, reboot and select recovery mode from grub's menu at startup (hit the esc key on boot when you see the prompt)
Same process, login, repeat edits to xorg.conf, etc.

That should work. I've got half the process working now, but don't have UI2 yet (saw another suggestion to start with UI1, and now I can't get it to switch to UI2 for the life of me).

Honestly, at this point, for your sanity - go with the 6xxx series chipset boards. You may lose a couple of sata slots, but that can be remedied with a card and the time you'll save will be worth it. Plus, you can use UI2 with alpha blending, which, would I have known that this board isn't capable of it yet, I would have skipped it in the first place.

Oh well, good thing I bought a 6xxx series board as a backup. Hopefully when it's better integrated into LMCE I can put it back in.
