Users / More problems with software RAID
« on: February 08, 2008, 03:21:54 pm »
Well I'm on day 3 now and 3 installations later...

Yesterday,I built my RAID array, and it worked great: When I would pop in a disk, and hit Copy, the RAID array would be the default selection.
However, the array went screwy yesterday and kept wanting to rebuild, so I reinstalled everything from scratch (again)

Now, I re created the Raid array. However, now when I insert a disk, I have to browse to /mnt then /device then /28 then /data then /public then /video..  You get the point - not user friendly at all!! (but it worked yesterday like it should!?)

I have checked in the admin under Advanced -> Configuration -> Raid. Then I go to Advanced.
I'm noticing that PK_Users was set to "Public" (yesterday it was set to "Use Pluto's Structure"). So I changed it to "Use Pluto's Structure". Then there is a checkbox "Use Automatically". This was checked yesterday, but today, no matter what I do it remains grayed out!

Aside from it not working how I would like it to for copying, there is another bad side effect - If I go Media->Video on my orbiter, it shows 2 of every movie! The paths are different however - one shows as:
File: PUBLIC:other/Software Raid 5 [28]/public/data/videos/blah.dvd
the other will show as:
File: /mnt/device/28/public/data/videos/blah.dvd

Can someone please help me get this straightened back out - I don't think I can go through another 10+ hour reinstall (10 hours because it rebuilds the Raid array every time)

Users / Cover art problem
« on: February 08, 2008, 05:01:34 am »
I have my core all set up (finally). I have a system disk that just holds the LinuxMCE install, and then a separate raid5.

When I insert a disk and hit copy, it copies to the raid5 (which is selected by default) just as it should. However, all of my copied dvd's come up as Unknown Disc. This is fine. But, when I go to the admin, and go Files & Media - > Cover Art.... whenever I scan for DVD's with no cover art, it only scans the system disk - not the Raid array where I am storing everything.

How can I scan for cover art for drives other than the one LMCE was installed to???

Users / Where to get high resolution LinuxMCE logos?
« on: February 08, 2008, 03:53:45 am »
I'm looking for some fairly high resolution LinuxMCE logos - I would like to change the boot screens and desktop wallpaper of my windows touchscreens so that it appears to be more integrated with the rest of the system.

Installation issues / Re: Dreambox VLC HTTP Stream
« on: February 08, 2008, 02:44:07 am »
I will be looking into doing something similar myself (though now with a Dreambox)

There is a FTA satellite receiver called NFusion Nova which has an ethernet port on it. It can stream a modified mpeg2 transport stream over UDP. Though it is meant for a server based PVR (it only sends the mpeg stream after you hit the record button), I plan on trying to get it to work with mythtv.

There is already a freeware server which converts the modified mpeg2 transport stream into a true mpeg2 program stream, which will play in any media player. Since they are so similar in this aspect, maybe we should put together a team to get this in LMCE and working!

Just to follow up - After about a 7 hour "rebuild" process on the raid array , all 3 drives so show as "Active" now like they should be.

I still wonder if the implementation in the admin is flawed - these were new drives in a new array, so there should have been nothing to rebuild. I did this 2 times with the same results.

One more question about the LMCE RAID...

When I set it up, i had to option for the parent to be either "Core" or "Core/Hybrid"

I chose "Core", but, I wonder what the diference would have been choosing the other?

Users / Asus EeePC - almost network boots
« on: February 07, 2008, 09:35:54 pm »
I have an Asus EeePC 4G. I thought I would see if it would network boot and become a stand-alone MD.

The network boot starts, fut hangs after about 22 seconds!

Code: [Select]
[   22.588975] NET: Registered protocol family 17
ipconfig: no devices to configure
/init: .: 1: Can't open /tmp/net-eth0.conf
[   22.594130] Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

_

is the NIC driver just not loading?  I know there is a patch for madwifi that enables it..  Does this mean I have to recompile madwifi in the core to get it to work?

thanks for the info..  Strange that it behaves this way... At minimum, it should be changed so the user is alerted that the array is building for the first time or something similar.
It has a progress bar in the beginning for formatting, but that only took 10 minutes or so. I had initially figured that it was finished after that step.

Still rebuilding...  About 4 hours into it... Admin shows it as 40%.  I'm guessing after its done rebulding, all 3 will show as active - but looks like it will take the rest of the day to figure out.
Yes, it is using the Raid in LMCE. I've never seen it like this either, but I haven't used a software RAID before either. Either its a bug, or it was decided to be the default behavior for LMCE. Would be nice to have an official word on this.

Thanks for the links. I do understand why computers use 1024 instead of 1000 (it is a square of 8), but I was suprised that I could lose 200 GB of space just to partition type overhead. I was really expecting to see much closer to 2000GB - oh well, you learn somethign new every day.

I will report back when it is done "rebuilding" my (not) damaged (and new) array to let you know if it all comes out well in the end.

thanks again

Actually, looking through the admin, I think I see what is going on..

It appears that the way LMCE creates the array is just confusing..  It is rebuilding the array..  It must just format 2 of the disks (which will tell the array that one drive has failed) and to add the 3rd drive it is rebuilding it into the array...

Very odd, but I think I see how its working now. I've just never seen it done this way..

I know raid5 only uses n-1 of n disks for space..

Again, the problem is that for this to work you need a minimum of 3 disks... Only 2 are listed as active and 1 as spare. Shouldn't all 3 be active in order for the striped parity to work? I don't want a spare - if a disk on the array fails, I will go get a new one.
(Maybe i'm misunderstanding the meaning of spare in the admin - but on most RAID systems, all 3 disks are active in a 3-disk raid5 array (and yes, I know I will lose space of aproximately one disk due to the parity bytes).  I'm just confused as to why it is listed as spare in the admin is all.

Also, it has been several hours since building the array, the hard drive light is still on, and in the admin the array is still listed as "Degraded/Rebuilding" and the "spare" (as the admin is calling it) as Activating..

Should it take this long - considering it is a new array and there is no data to rebuild...?

Users / RAID problems...

I just put in 3 1TB hard drives into my core.
I went in to the admin->advanced->RAID
I added a new raid array (raid 5)
I added a 3 drives (1TB each) and made sure none of them had a check mark under "as spare disk" (i have done this twice now)

But what happens is that 2 drives become active, and one becomes spare.. (I don't want a spare, I want a 3-disk raid5 array.. In fact, the minimum for a RAID 5 array is 3 drives, so I don't know how or why it is working with 2 active drives)

Also, the size come out to be 1863.03 GB, shouldn't it come out to be 2000.00 GB??

Is this a bug, or am I missing something?

Also, will LMCE alert me if a drive fails so I can rebuild the array with a new one?

Installation issues / Re: Problem with MediaDirector
« on: February 07, 2008, 06:56:29 pm »
From what I understand (I dont have one, but have read about this problem)

The Firestations have a custom video driver to enable UI2 - however they use a custom debian kernel and currently neither MythTV nor Kubuntu will run on them.

I have heard, however, that you can set them up as a regular MD using UI1 and have full functionallity (you'll just have an uglier interface!)

I know fiire is trying to fix this, but until it is figured out, you need to decide whether you want UI2 with crippled functionallity, or UI1 with full functionallity.

Users / Re: Tags and coverart in id3 files carry over to new installation?
« on: February 07, 2008, 01:26:41 am »
0704 doesn't read embedded id3 tags, I did seem to recall (iirc) that this would change with 0710, but I don't know if it has.

0710 does read embedded public id3 tags :-)

Totallymaxed - so for the separate id3 files with video and the embedded ones in mp3s(etc), is this bi-directional synchronisation? If I update the db directly and then run UpdateMedia, does this update both the id3 file and the id3 tags embedded in the mp3s? What about (and this is the important one!) if I use an external id3 tag editor on my WinXP machine to change the embedded tags on my music, then run UpdateMedia, will these changes propagate back into the DB?? Or will UpdateMedia detect that the tag in the file is different than the DB and overwrite the file version with what is in the DB?

I would also like to know how the interaction between the DB and the id3 files behaves. It is extremely important to those of us who want to preserve all their hard work filling out attributes and such.
Also - what is the reasoning behind storing attributes both in the database and in id3 files?

Feature requests & roadmap / Re: Feature Request - Database relocation
« on: February 06, 2008, 10:53:50 pm »
Just to sum up what I'm proposing -
Just a setting in the admin page that lets you relocate the database to another directory/disk/partition (so you can put it on your raid array, etc...)
