Users / Re: Display problem with nVidia 8600GT card on 1080p TV
« on: February 12, 2008, 07:34:20 am »
Thanks Colin,

I swapped the 8600 GT with the 7600 GS graphics card from another computer, and got to the A/V Wizard. Curious thing though, in the selections, I cannot seem to select the 1080p resolution even at 50 Hz (The TV complains about invalid signal). My TV is Sharp Acquos 1080p and I get 1080p from my DVD on the other HDMI input. I chose the 720p in A/V Wizard and was able to install LMCE perfectly. I got the flickr screensaver, played some DVDs and CDs. About the 1080p I know this has something to do with the graphics driver. Can anyone confirm?

Now when I restart, it gets stuck on the kubuntu splash screen. Does anyone know how to get to the quiet option with no splash screen? The TV says that it is getting a 1080p input. I had selected 720p in the A/V Wizard since 1080p was not working. Anyway I will keep playing around with it to resolve this. Any help would be appreciated of course.

***************Edit: ************************
I found out the cause for this problem. I had plugged in a second drive, and kubuntu  bootup was saying that '/dev/sda1' could not be found. How do I get it to bootup with the first drive after adding the second drive? My plan was to store all music, movies etc. on the second drive. That way even if I reinstall the final version for 0710, my media would be safe on the second drive. Does anyone know how to do this? I will start a separate thread on this.

Colin, I have tried holding down the shift key to get AVWizard to start and then pressing the 1 key to get it to select DVI output, then selecting 0 for 1080p output. I tried this both on the TV and a computer monitor.

Will try it once again according to your instructions. I will also search for dual DVI on the forums. Searching for 8600 did not yield useful results if I remember.

While setting up and troubleshooting my DVI connection I found it very useful to have a VGA monitor connected at the same time.  When the DI was not displaying anything I always had the VGA to see what was going on.

Thanks, but my graphics card has 2 DVI connections, so no VGA here. Does anyone know where to find LMCE 0710 b3 standalone CD? I am trying separate installs of kubuntu 0710 and LMCE since the DVD installation does not work for me.

Has anyone gotten LMCE working with nVidia 8600 GT graphics card yet? It would help immensely to know if anyone has made it work with nVidia 8600 series and how they got past the display issues. These cards are current not future, so I would imagine a pretty large install base with these cards.

I tried hooking my machine to a computer monitor, and got the same results (blank screen after the kubuntu splash screen), so I am pretty sure this is a display driver issue.

I want to know if the DVD install will even work on this, or should I go the CD route (install kubuntu first, then LMCE etc.) Thanks in advance for any responses.

I was able to install 0710 b3 on my HTPC, but when it boots up, the login is displayed only for a second and disappears. Is this a problem with the driver? I have the ASUS nvidia 8600 GT card and have hooked this up to a Sharp Aquos 1080p TV using a DVI to HDMI cable. Is the nvidia 8xxx series supported in LMCE 0710?

Any suggestions on how I can get around this? Do I get LMCE working on a regular monitor display first and then try it out with the TV display? Please let me know.

Thanks!

Can anyone confirm that when you unplug and replug your media storage drive in (via internal SATA port), LMCE sees the drive immediately? Are there any special steps required to make LMCE search for the drive, or is it plug'n'play just like Windows?

I wouldn't go around (un/re-)plugging drives into internal SATA ports while the machine is still on.

I meant turning the machine off and on ofcourse. Just don't want to accidentally overwrite my music collection!

On the Mirror links, what is the difference between the DVD and the DVD DL links? What additional stuff do you get by downloading the DVD Dual Layer (DL) link? There is a additional 1GB or so in the Dual Layer link. Is this only the LMCE video or some other stuff? Thanks.

totallymaxed, tkmedia, fibres

Thanks for your suggestions. I think I will go with one drive for LMCE and the other for media storage. This way, the reinstalls will go much smoother.

Now that 710b3 is out, I intend to install it and play around with this version of LMCE. I do have a question/suggestion for documentation (willing to document it myself if the answers are given on this thread).

How do you setup your hard-drive configuration so you can re-install LMCE without erasing your media?
e.g. If I have 2 hard-drives, 500 GB each, am I required to reserve ALL of one drive for LMCE (this is overkill in terms of space needed)? I was thinking of partitioning the first drive to 100 & 400 GB partitions and use the 400 GB partition for recording TV etc. Is 100 GB sufficient for LMCE for the long term? Will re-install of the next LMCE version erase my 400 GB partition TV recordings? What about the other 500 GB hard-drive? Do I need to unplug it when re-installing LMCE to prevent erasing my media? I am asking this because I know I will end up re-installing LMCE atleast 2 - 3 times before it is 'finalized'.

I can collect answers from here and put out a 'best practice' on the Wiki if people post answers to this thread.

Thanks

Super. Have you looked at this board?

Gigabyte GA-73UM-S2H

I wanted a video card that can offload the graphics decoding from the CPU completely. The 8600GT does that well. There is not much difference between the GT and GTS for this chipset, so this is pretty good value for the money (card is around $139)

Hey Super. Nice to see you join this thread!

Looks like were going to have similar systems. I'm happy to see someone with a similar system.

What LCD T.V are you going with? I've been looking at many of them. Hard to decide!
Sharp Aquos TV

Have you got a Core System planned out?
This is my Core system

HDMI does pass both sound and video over one cable. But your idea with SPDIF should be equivalent.
This works out better since my sound goes directly to receiver. I don't have a receiver with HDMI yet and most receivers with HDMI don't upscale to 1080p etc. (some expensive ones do). Until then, my dvd player will have to do!

I am going to go with the following hardware:

Mobo:Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 Rev 2.0
HD for O/S install:500 Gig Hitachi (using an old one)
HD for media: WD 1 TB
CPU:Quad core 6600 LGA 775
Case: Silverstone CW01
RAM:Corsair XMS2 2GB DDR2-800
DVD Drive
Power Supply:Antec TruePower 430
Graphics card: Asus EN8600 Silent 512 MB
No TV Tuner Card selected yet (recommendations welcome)

I just ordered all of this and its on its way!

I am planning on starting off with LinuxMCE 710 when it is released. Will let you guys know how it goes.

I am planning on getting a DVI to HDMI adaptor for my LCD TV and using the SPDIF out to the receiver. (I read somewhere that all graphics card with HDMI also currently pass SPDIF sound (as opposed to PCM) over HDMI, so this setup should be equivalent to the HDMI card setup. Anyone tried this out? Would appreciate some help on this.
Cheers!

Does anyone know if version 710 will support the nVidia 7xxx chipset. Asking because I need to base my motherboard decision (whether or not to go with Abit AN-M2 HD board) on this.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
did you decide on the ABIT motherboard? Any findings / suggestions that you can share with the group?
Thanks.
