Users / Re: Diskless MD

Got it, will keep that in mind for the next one I try, thanks!

Totallymaxed: can't comment on whether the display drivers were working correctly (no way to tell really!), all I can say is that the exact same laptop, with the exact same PXE configuration stuck in a reboot loop before I tried to add the MD to the Admin console - (1audio: I note that it was well into Linux boot, having already done several pages of logging on the screen, including changing the font, so there is no indication of a PXE issue, it gets well past the PXE part).

As soon as I created the MD manually (as a device, directly, not using the specific Add MD function, as that didn't work as already described) and rebooted the laptop again, it worked perfectly.

Nothing to fix here for me, I was only testing using it, I am not attempting to get it working permanently, and have now moved on to testing other stuff - just thought it might be of use to someone else.

ok just a footnote to this then - adding the device manually in our experience can often leave you with an MD that looks like its been created fully and is working ok but in fact often is not. It seems like some of the scripts that get run during and after auto-detection do not complete properly if a manual add device is carried out. I can't say what exactly fails in this situation but it is our experience that using auto-detection is the most reliable way to add MD's in particular.

However your mileage may vary ;-)

Installation issues / Re: No media - pnp doesn't seem to work!
« on: September 01, 2007, 11:15:36 pm »
Worked it out - seems it doesn't handle Windows <domain>\<username> syntax very well or the LSA format of .\<username> so it was trying to authenticate against an account that "doesn't exist", in the end I created a new local account and used that instead and everything started working!

Thanks for your help.

What actually is the point of the Manage Drives dialogue??! I, too, have several drives there that once detected they never go away, and clicking the Manage button just brings up a screen with blank panels in it and some buttons that pretty much do nothing. What is this dialogue for?

Users / VoIP and providers
« on: August 30, 2007, 11:00:51 pm »
Has anyone got a list of the providers that are "out of the box"? Does it work with pure Internet services like Skype? Is this VoIP with dedicated lines such as the ISDN commentary I have seen, or can it work simply with VoIP over Internet service providers? What are the options and providers?

I also had a problem with just booting to PXE - (I don't have a dual NIC environment as I am still just playing, gonna build up a dedicated system from components in due course). The Dell laptop boots and goes through the initial part of Linux startup, changing the font, doing the announcement, then the last message I can actually see is running a .sh script that says something about diskless... it disappears too quickly as at that point it reboots again and goes into an endless loop and never gets any further!

I then read the bit RGoolsby refers to about adding the MD in the admin console. I don't know if this is a new bug for 0704, but the Add button does nothing. It just refreshes the screen - if you are not careful you could accidentally misinterpret the OnScreen orbiter config section for the core/hybrid as the new device and reconfigure that one - thankfully I carefully checked before I did this. No matter what I tried I couldn't Add a new MD (unlike in the Add new Device section which works just fine), so I couldn't type in the MAC as the instructions indicate.

In the end, I added a new Device from that dialogue (instead of new MD), struggled a little picking the right Template and other details. But finally got the device in with the MAC, now as soon as I boot the laptop it went all the way through just fine, and in the Admin console it correctly identifies it as an MD...

Installation issues / Partitioning the Core HDD?
« on: August 29, 2007, 10:08:23 pm »
Anybody got any pointers on how I can partition the core's hdd and place the system on the first partition and use the second for media?

I understand that by default LMCE will take the partition (or entire drive??) wipe it and install, thus loosing any data you may have. I am going to get a very large drive for the core, and want to be able easily to re-install LMCE when I need without running the danger of it wiping my media... thoughts?

Compatible Products & Services / Motherboard with HDMI?
« on: August 29, 2007, 09:54:05 pm »
Just bumping this question...

I am looking for a motherboard that is known as compatible, with decent integrated NVIDIA chipset (or something else that will support full UI2), that has an HDMI output.

Has anyone any experience that can share??

Feature requests & roadmap / HDMI control interface support and Pandora
« on: August 29, 2007, 09:47:56 pm »
Any chance the control channel for HDMI can be added to the roadmap? With more and more displays and amps supporting this, it seems the most convenient way to control the display and AV components whilst sending audio and video digitally...

Also, a rather more specific request - does anybody know if Pandora are likely to release a Linux version of their applet and whether that might be integrated?

Installation issues / Re: No media - pnp doesn't seem to work!
« on: August 28, 2007, 10:37:50 pm »
That's the problem, even when it finds my "Media" share on the PC and I provide login/password credentials it doesn't create any folder structure at all - even after a long time. I have checked and none of the folders already in that share conflict with the names (Public/Home/<usernames>) - I intended to just move the media out of the other folders into the Public folder's subfolders after it had done this.

Secondly - I have checked that the LMCE is showing media at a very simple level by using Windows' Network Neighbourhood and browsing the other way into the LMCE Public folder and copying a test video file onto the Core, locally - then this file appears and plays just fine, so it doesn't appear to be anything to do with the cataloguing or database.

Another thing is, it seems to think it is detecting public/home/<username1>/<username2> on DCEROUTER and keeps asking me to confirm adding these and providing username/password for those as well - I don't understand this, surely that is local to the Core and it should do that without pnp?

Finally, as I say, it is constantly detecting the DCEROUTER and "file server" again and again, with the messages below, and the little log messages appear in the top left corner of the screen ... that can't be right, but it is even displaying repeated messages about the DCEROUTER....

Any other thoughts?

Installation issues / No media - pnp doesn't seem to work!
« on: August 28, 2007, 09:16:33 am »
I have installed 0704 1.1 without any problems (this time!) But when I add a PC to the network, it gets the IP lease and the LMCE discovers it and starts adding it after I confirm I want it to use it. Then after that it seems to be detecting "shares" and asks me if I want to use those. I say yes - I want to use them and provide login and passwords for both the "file server" and then the "file shares". But the "file shares" are clearly the LMCE users and nothing to do with the Windows file shares I want it to connect to. I tried removing it in the admin panel and asked it to use the LMCE default folder structure. But NONE of this seems to make any difference at all - I cannot see any of my video media in the "Video" menu, it is completely empty. I figured it might take some time to catalogue them, esp as it may be connecting to the C$ admin share with all the system files, but it isn't doing anything. I tried sharing the media folder directly so that it could go through all my video and audio folders, again nothing. I managed to get some JPGs appearing under the Pictures menu when I plugged in a thumb drive and told it to use the default, waited for it to create the structure, then moved some pictures into the right location. But I don't seem to be able to get it to even create the folder structure on the remote PC.

Periodically it displays the same messages in the top right that seem to suggest that it is constantly scanning and doing things and this seems to be related to the problem given the messages below - and the message number is now well over 1000!

"Existing device already enabled xxx ....
Done with new device xxx...."

Its supposed to be pnp, but I just don't seem to be able to get it to find any media on my other PC, nor how to direct it to specific shares.... Can anybody suggest what might be wrong, or even how to get it to completely forget this PC (I have deleted all the related Devices in the Admin console and this doesn't seem to have done it as it is re-adding the device but now ignoring the shares) so I can try again and this time choose to use the default folder structure!

Thanks!

How well does this work for HD and SD content? Does it understand the EPG, and other features? Has anybody used it? What is the impression?

Thanks for the background! Will put in the request.

Related question around your point on future proofing (was thinking that as well) - the motherboard that I found (ASUS AM2 M2A-VM HDMI Motherboard) is much the same but with HDMI, but changes the video chip set to AMD 690G & ATI SB600 away from the NVIDIA (damn!) - does this mean I will not be able to use the full UI2 with Alpha Blending/Overlay/transparency/etc? I was reading that support for this outside the NVIDIAs was very limited....

BTW, I just found the ASUS AM2 M2A-VM HDMI Motherboard (should have scrolled down a couple of lines on the web site!) - but although this obviously has the HDMI capability, on the same spec sheet the outputs listed only include a DVI interface.... is this just an omission? Does anybody know for sure if it does actually have an HDMI interface?
