Users / VDR - DVB-T and multichannel/surround sound??
« on: July 11, 2008, 03:49:41 am »
Is VDR currently set up to pass through surround sound (SPDIF)?

I never get anything other than stereo - although I know some of the transmissions (esp the HD AC3 ones) must have multichannel. I get full 5.1 from DVDs and some BT downloads, just not from VDR watching TV. I have played with the sound options in xineliboutput and cranked it up from the default Stereo 2.0 to 5.1, choosen upmix, disabled downmix and it doesn't seem to do anything.

Interestingly, on the few occasions I have used VDR to record TV, I seem to have hit some transmissions that have more than 2 channels and it seems to play them fine, just not for live TV....

Users / VDR stability / 0710RC2
« on: July 10, 2008, 06:38:05 am »
Hi all (Andrew!)

Just wanted to report my recent experiences with VDR under RC2. I was having problems with it for a while, but thought it was just down to a dodgy install. I have just rebuild the core clean, and I am seeing the same problems as the previous build. I didn't use to get this prior to RC2.

1. Occasionally, when changing channels with up/down, the screen will suddenly go black (no sound) instead of selecting the next channel and do nothing. I have to hit Stop, and then TV again and off it goes again. If I just try to change channels, the OSD indicates that it is doing so, but the screen stays black.

2. Sometimes, when I hit menu or channel up/down, it takes a very long time to respond. Sometimes 3-4 seconds, sometimes 10-15 seconds. From there it may return to normal speed, or it may continue being sluggish and then eventually come good. Next time I pick up the remote it does the same again, or sometimes it will be perfectly normal. It seems to queue the button presses so if you keep pressing it will often go nuts when it finally does wake up.

Has anybody else installed the flash plugin for Firefox so they can use YouTube (etc) through the Computing option? Do you find the performance to be really poor? I find that video refresh to be very slow indeed, to the point were you can actually see each frame being drawn (albeit very quickly) almost like watching video through a Remote Desktop or VNC session!

Looks like Silicondust are very close to releasing the DVB version of this unit. Does anybody know:

1) Will LMCE need any updates to make the PnP work for the DVB version, and

2) Will it PnP just as well for VDR? (do the tuning, EPG, etc)

Users / 0710 RC2 - Fast forward jumps backwards occasionally...
« on: June 26, 2008, 05:02:35 am »
Has anybody notice in 0710RC2 (i386 and AMD64, confirmed) that for some DVDs - perhaps all under certain circumstances, and perhaps in video media files, too - when fast forwarding (x2, x4, x8, x16, etc) and you hit play again it sometimes jumps backwards? Sometimes quite a long way (over a minute) and usually to the same spot in any one section. Haven't confirmed it, but it maybe jumping back to a chapter mark...?

Its really annoying because it is difficult to get around. I have seen it in several titles so far, and Southlands Tales is definitely one of them, paritcularly in the last chapter mark when I try to fast forward to the credits it always jumps back to the last scene. I have rebuilt as i386 and AMD64 under 0710RC2 and both do the same thing....

If anybody has seen this or can confirm the behaviour can you please post here and I will formalise it in a Mantis?

Users / Can't set up pipes for Marantz SR6001
« on: May 29, 2008, 05:38:15 am »
In the release version, there seems to be a template for the Marantz SR series of receivers - I'm assuming this is the one that Hari created... however, it doesn't autodetect it during the setup wizard. Is this because the pnp script hasn't been included yet?

I have tried creating the device manually, but I simply can't get my head around how these work (in particular pipes). I create the device, set the com port (actually a USB to serial converter that it recognises), etc.

But when I try to create a pipe (audio or video) both the core and the receiver only have outputs, no inputs - surely the receiver should have inputs as well? How do I get it to create these?

I'm assuming that I just have to create an audio and video pipe from the core to the receiver, and that should be it... right?
Also, when I try sending "test" codes from the template to the receiver it doesn't do anything....

Users / My receiver doesn't have inputs for Pipes...
« on: May 20, 2008, 01:31:06 am »
I am trying to add my Marantz SR6001 as the setup wizard in RC2 mentions the SR series but doesn't autodetect it. I have always had problems getting my head around the config interface to pipes!

I have created a device from the template. It seems that you have to create the pipe from the "upstream" device, as the options in the "downstream" device creates pipes only FROM it not TO it. Assuming I have correctly interpretted that, I am then using the connections wizard, but it lists both the Core and Marantz as only having outputs. How do I get the Marantz device to have an input so that I can connect the core to it?

Users / nVidia, VSync/Blank and jerky video...
« on: May 17, 2008, 04:00:49 pm »
Does anybody know if this is good advice? http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Nvidia_Card_Tweaks_For_Better_MythTV_and_UI_Performance

And if it is superceded by the UseEvents option in xorg.conf?

I can't see how you would avoid tearing if it is not sync'd with the vertical blanking period. Also, it doesn't specify what is meant by "high CPU". Playing media files and ripped DVDs I get anywhere between 20 and 30% CPU for the xine process which doesn't sound high to me (AMD 5200+ in AMD64 bit mode) but I still get jerky video....

I have a couple of divx videos, that when I came to play them the first time, there are some very strange diagonal distortion "lines". They are clearly part of the signal repeated as they change with the picture in the background and you can sometimes make out the picture in them themselves. They are overlayed quite transparently over the real picture, but sometimes they are so pronounced as to make the image unwatchable, other times they are just annoying ghosts.

Never seen anything like it before, but it happens on 2 different divx's from different sources. Have tried a few other pre-existing, known-good videos on my media share and don't see this behaviour. No idea whether it is related to divx itself, it is quite likely that it is a coincidence that both happen to be divx. AVICodec tells me that they are both divx v5.

When I play them in Windows Media Player, they both play perfectly! Anybody seen this before? Suggestions?

Feature requests & roadmap / Suspend to RAM for MDs
« on: April 17, 2008, 12:21:02 am »
I think I lost track of the thread that was discussing this some time ago....

Did this ever get anywhere? I know there were some teething issues, particularly with reliable resuming, but did it ever get sorted out and if so will it be included in RC1 or Release? If not, did anybody log a mantis for it? Clearly Linux can handle it, so I'm assuming its something getting lost in one of the LMCE modules (perhaps state information?)

Users / Hardware Acceleration and Video Card settings....
« on: April 02, 2008, 04:39:10 am »
back on the road to trying to figure out why my video quality is so poor (jerky for all sources) after taking a break for a while as it was doing my head in!

just wanted to get a feel for what people are using as their settings for "Hardware Acceleration" and "Video Card" in the admin site under Media Directors. Especially those using the same mobo as me, the Abit M2HD - I think tkmedia uses it...

I haven't modified these settings from the last install I did and they are set to Standard Video card and xv. Anybody have any advice on what they "should" be set to? Do they make any difference? The mobo has a nVidia 7050PV and GeForce630a - should I switch it to the "GeForce or TNT" option? Does that do anything? And what about the hardware acceleration? It always seems to be xv, but shouldn't I have it on OpenGL? I thought that the whole UI was OpenGL.....

I've given up on installing newer drivers (using Beta4 so they are quite new anyway) this sometimes makes matters worse for me, and the default displays OK, just jerky - particularly noticable when scrolling ticker tape new feeds go across the screen...

Users / Ripping creates a new Windows Share: folder....!?
« on: April 02, 2008, 02:03:18 am »
Using Beta4, AMD64 (DVD)...

For some reason when I rip any CDs now, I choose my "Windows Share: media" to rip to my networked PC, it shows the folders and I can pick the right one I want to rip to, but when it starts the rip, it slices the ":" out of the string, and so creates a new folder under my audio folder locally on the Core instead of going to my networked PC, so I end up with it on the Core and the core has "Windows Share: media" and "Windows Share media" one pointing to the network share the other local....

I have no idea what I have done to cause this, I'm pretty sure it never used to do this on this particular build, although I cannot be sure that I have ripped anything since my last rebuild... it certainly didn't do this in previous builds. Anybody got any thoughts on how I can fix this up?

Users / Can't select CIFS instead of SMBFS....
« on: March 24, 2008, 10:45:16 pm »
I have had a number of issues in the past with both cifs and smbfs for connecting to a Windows share for all my media. The default of cifs successfully discovered my shares and populated the database with all my media, but refused to acknowledge that the share was online so I couldn't play the media (other than by search by name). When I switched to smbfs (after Zaerc's fix to the script) all came good immediately.

Subsequently, I started having issues where the core would seem to freeze whilst playing video media files (and DVDs as well from memory). I googled several people complaining about the same thing with smbfs in the general Linux community (Ubuntu, too I think) but they were from 2005. Didn't find any specific fix, but when I switched back to cifs, not only did it see the share as online, it fixed the freezing issue completely. I think I had upgraded to beta4 in the meantime and I assume that is what had fixed cifs.

I am currently set to smbfs again and am getting the freezing issue (happens every few minutes, randomly, and lasts for about 20 seconds, then continues) - BUT for some reason I just cannot switch back to cifs in the admin site! Everytime I change it, and reload the router, it switches back to smbfs!!

Has anybody got any ideas as to why this might be happening? What can I do to permanently switch to cifs??

Just reaching out to see if there is any interest in this feature before I log it on mantis...

Quite often I want to be able to play different video source from audio source - eg play some "mindless" video graphics whilst listening to CDs/mp3s, or watch TV or more often a video file/DVD whilst listening to my own music as the background. Currently there is no way of doing this from LMCE. I need to switch the TV to a different video source, or vice versa, and that kind of goes against the idea of LMCE running all your media :)

Technically, it shouldn't be difficult (at the xine level, although I have no idea whether this would screw up the DCE messaging side of things), but obviously, getting a nice, flexible but easy to use UI to do this could be interesting! Certainly, I haven't really thought of anything specific that would fit the bill.

Before I log it, would like to know if anyone else is interested in this, too. More likely to get traction if many are interested!

Users / Beta 4: media browser issues still there?
« on: March 04, 2008, 10:35:23 pm »
I have installed the new beta - 2 issues I had with previous versions were:

1. When sorting audio by Genre - all the genres were listed as tiles, but clicking on any of them revealed nothing beneath. I logged a mantis - and apparently it was fixed (due to the query not selecting files recursively below the audio directory)

2. Seemingly with compliation CDs, when sorting by Album, the album appears multiple times as tiles with only one track under each instead of them all being grouped under a single album tile. I believe this may be because each of the tracks has a different performer attribute and these are not getting grouped by the query.

Both of the mantises that I logged for these were closed as fixed in revisions later than Beta 3. But I still get exactly the same behaviour as before - does anybody else still see this?

(BTW - I believe there are several other similar issues in the media grid presentation, but it was confusing to determine for sure so I was waiting until Beta 4 came out and fixed the obvious ones, before I went looking for others)
