Users / Unravelling of datagrid entries in Album sort mode...
« on: January 09, 2009, 03:35:12 am »
Sorry to bring this subject up again! It has been discussed numerous times by people like me and Totallymaxed, etc... but I cannot recall what the status of this bug was, and I get mixed up as to exactly when it happens... I just came across it again so I thought I would put it down in writing as a line in the sand.

When browsing audio media in Album sort mode, albums that consist of tracks that come from more than one artist (eg compilations, dance music, classical, etc) each artist has its own Album tile in the Album sort mode, when you click on one of these identical "Album" tiles it takes you to a datagrid of the tracks attributed to that artist. Only once you click on a track do you get any indication of which artist it is.

Clearly, the Album sort should group together all album titles into a single unique instance for each. Then I would propose that under this either all the tracks are listed if all have the same Artist attribute, or if there are at least 2 Artists, then an additional datagrid layer be added between the Album datagrid and the track datagrid that lists/groups the artists together.

The first part of this (the symptoms) are looking for a bug fix, the latter (conditionally adding an extra datagrid layer) is, of course, looking for new functionality - I should have made that clear.

Either way, I'm sure that this has been fixed in the past (there maybe other sorts/instances where this behaviour occurs) but it seems to be back - I vaguely recall Andrew mentioning that it was fixed in an earlier version (perhaps b3 or b4) but came back in rc2 - my question is, has this been resolved and included in the 0810 alphas? (the bug, not the extra functionality)

The other point, that I believe Thom backed as well, was to add a little extra in the datagrid views in the way of indicating what view you are in and how things are grouped. Personally, I believe that a "bread crumbs" approach would be the most user friendly, as it would give a clear indication of the heirarchy level and aid it learning how to use sorts more efficiently - this could continue into the feature where when a track it about to be selected, you can click on one of the black attribute boxes to filter as this also obeys the heirarchy and often you need to hit back a few times to capture all of that attribute.

This is starting to get into the question of the nomenclature/labelling of Sorts and filters, so I will leave that to another time :)

EDIT:

As an example of where this seems to work well - in Performer sort mode, when you have a performer that you have more than one album of, it doesn't display the performer's name in multiple tiles, one for each album. There is one performer tile, then all the albums are listed beneath this when you click. And finally, all the tracks for the album you pick are listed beneath the album tile...

Developers / WebDT 366 ongoing development?
« on: January 07, 2009, 06:47:32 am »
Thom - are you still actively working on the WebDT image? If so, can I give you some feedback on a couple of points?

1. The suspend function is great, but still takes too long to make it worth using when having a long session with the web pad. Given the limited battery life, esp with the second hand units, what options are there to reduce running power like timing out the LCD after 5 mins (say), perhaps slowing the CPU, or even some kind of suspend to RAM, each woken on a button/screen press?

2. The search function is excruciatingly slow, each letter typed can take 5 seconds to come up, and some presses seem to be missed. I'm assuming this is just a limitation of the performance of the pad, and nothing can be done about it?

Users / HDHomeRun DVB-T
« on: December 28, 2008, 11:41:41 pm »
Looks like the DVB-T version is imminent - delivery in the UK in January apparently. Anybody know if LMCE will be able to use this device as is based on the ATSC version compatibility? Or is this more a thing that VDR needs to support (as they are already saying the basic Linux drivers are available)

Users / pnp repeatedly detecting drives that don't exist ....
« on: November 27, 2008, 05:42:05 am »
Second or third time this has happened to my core in the last couple of months resulting in a full rebuild. Hoping to avoid that this time!

Suddenly the pnp scripts think they have detected a drive, initially the IP is the internal address of the core, but the name is clearly pulled from some text file somewhere. No matter what you say to do with it, from then on one after another comes up with different names - the names are something to do with LMCE, presumably coming from a text file that contains strings for the UI maybe? Looks like the pnp script has spun off into outer space and I have no idea what caused it.

I had just recently followed Thom's instructions to drop the pluto_media database so I could start afresh, but this is the first time I had tried this, the previous times this happened had the exact same symptoms but I hadn't just dropped the db...

Any thoughts on what might be happening, and what I might be able to do to stop it other than killing the pnp scripts.... tried a reboot and reload... nope..

Users / Bifurcating a stream to multiple MDs and VLC (Video LAN)....
« on: November 20, 2008, 07:19:24 am »
I have been playing around trying to direct media (a video file) to play on 2 MDs (the hybrid and an MD) at the same time. However, when I select the media to play then go to the floor plan, select the 2 MDs I want it to play on then the media stream, it is clearly trying to do it but on one MD (the original one the media was playing on I think) it works perfectly, on the second MD the screen just goes black.

The one with the black screen seems to be trying to play the media but no video or sound. If I do it the other way around, the other MD exhibits the exact same behaviour. I know that split streams like this used to be implemented using VLC, so I tried adding that software module to both MDs, but the device never comes up. Other posts suggest that VLC is no longer used so presumably that software has been omitted. I have now removed them again and reloaded. But the problem still exists....

Any thoughts on what is wrong here??

Users / Windows Orbiter keeps causing regens all the time...
« on: November 18, 2008, 11:47:44 pm »
I have a Windows Orbiter setup, but for some reason everytime I reboot it wants to do a regen! I think it may even be doing it for reloads too.... has anybody else seen this? It only appears to be a quick regen.

Users / Manage Drives not available on an MD...
« on: November 18, 2008, 03:12:02 am »
Dumb question, but its been ages since I last had an MD up and running.

I have one now, it has no HDD or optical drive. But I thought that the Manage Drives option in the Media menu should still be there as it is formatted to display all drives in the house. It appears on my Core where a DVD drive actually is, but not on my MD....

So the only way I can get a DVD to play on the MD is to switch it to control the room the Core is in, tell that to play, then using the Media map select the MD and the stream to move it to the MD....

Surely that isn't right?

Developers / Easy way to isolate missing media and delete?
« on: November 09, 2008, 03:21:46 am »
I have a lot of media in my database that is "missing" because I have renamed the files to get rid of bad characters. But they are spread out all over the share. Is there a sql query I can use to safely select them all and delete them? Also, is the flag to mark "missing from disk" the same as that used to flag files on devices that are offline?

Users / Core crashing... routes but little else...
« on: October 31, 2008, 10:07:18 pm »
In recent days (with a clean build) I have been noticing in the mornings sometimes the core isn't quiet working.

Usually, my PC on the internal network cannot browse the Internet. I can route through the core no problem, but it seems to have stopped forwarding DNS requests. And i cannot ssh in.

This morning I may have caught it just before it got into this state as DNS wasn't being forwarded but I was able to ssh in. However, when I did this the shell started behaving strangely and then started generating Seg Fault errors for every command I issued, then died.

When I looked in messages there was obviously some significant problem last night that effectively time bombed the system for when I started using it this morning.

Users / Disabling Bluetooth dongle autodiscovery...
« on: October 31, 2008, 09:24:09 pm »
In the wiki there are instructions on how to disable Bluetooth Dongle's autodiscover. I am keen to use this as every bugger that walks past my house seems to have bt enabled on their phone and its driving me nuts! The instructions are:
To prevent LinuxMCE from finding bluetooth devices outside of your home the autodetection (of any BT device) can be turned off as followed: [1]

Login in Web Admin
Go to Advanced -> Configuration -> Devices
Open the CORE/MD where is located your bluetooth device
Open DCERouter and click on Orbiter Plugin
Check the Ignore check box under "Device data".

There are a couple of questions I have - first what does the ignore box actually tell the Orbiter to ignore? It seems a bit general and I wanted to make sure it wasn't going to turn off other events as well. Certainly in the Disk Drive device the ignore events option seems more targetted.

Also, the instruction to go to the DCErouter doesn't seem to tally with the previous instruction to go to the core OR MD that the bt dongle is plugged into....

Users / JavaMO/Symbian - howto search/sort???
« on: October 31, 2008, 09:00:51 pm »
I have finally got the Symbian Orbiter client working on my Nokia N70, and it seems to work pretty well albeit a bit slow on screen redraws. The biggest problem I'm having is working out how to search media or use the sort function of the On Screen Orbiter.

Problem is, with anything approaching a reasonable amount of media, loading up the media grid is agonisingly slow as it is in Title sort mode so is obviously rendering every piece of media in that category (say Audio), and then it is impractical to browse for what you are looking for because of this (I'm talking 15+ seconds to grab the first screen image).

If I was able to change the sort mode to something like Filename this would likely speed up the datagrid rendering and make it much more practical to browse for media. Being able to do a search would be nice as well.

Does anybody know if these functions exist, and how to access them? thx!

Hi all

I am still having problems with UpdateMedia - in another thread I described it as running continuously and creating very large log files. I had one of Thom's .ogg screencasts that the log file suggested it was borking on. Dunno why, but I moved it to a different location so that UpdateMedia couldn't see it, and now I have what I consider to be more normal behaviour were it does sleep for a couple of mins at the end of a run...

But, I am still seeing strange stuff that I think is not correct. Even though I am not changing/adding/deleting any media, I still get lines that are coloured (yellow or green, not sure which as I'm colourblind!). The messages seem to suggest that it is the same files each time, and it says that it needs to sync because they are not in the database, which makes me think it isn't inserting them correctly. I am guessing this is one of those issues where UpdateMedia or MySQL doesn't like a particular character in the file name.... several of them have ' in them but not all, some others have : in them....

Is there a definitive list of the all the characters that are not allowed in file names? Also, dave/rodecot suggests that spaces/whitespace is not allowed either... is this true as most of mine have spaces in them and generally this doesn't seem to cause any problems finding them and playing them...

I'd like to troubleshoot this one to prune out all the messages that shouldn't be there and will be happy to write a wiki afterwards with the findings...

Can post my UpdateMedia.log file if this post provokes interest... :)

Thanks

Users / UpdateMedia doesn't seem to be working any more
« on: October 23, 2008, 06:34:04 am »
I have noticed at times that UpdateMedia doesn't seem to scan in some media for a long time, and I actually suspect, at all!

I have just rebuilt my core, but I'm now seeing the same issue again - it definitely scanned in the existing media over time. But I just added a new piece of media (.avi) and it didn't find it after hours. I believe that UpdateMedia sleeps for 2mins if it has nothing to do, and then looks for any directories that have changed and scans them in if needed... right? So it should certainly have gotten the new media quiet quickly. If I manually sync it finds it just fine. In the Sync menu it can see the media on disk, but it has the drive icon indicating that it isn't in the database until I manually sync.

I also noticed some CIFS errors popping up in dmesg, so I tried switching to smbfs but that doesn't seem to have fixed it. I have tried in the past reloading the router, rebooting the system or just unticking the Update Media Daemon box and re-ticking it... all seem to have no impact...

Any thoughts??

Users / Re-initialising/clearing the media database...
« on: October 15, 2008, 06:23:37 am »
Can anyone suggest a simple and safe way to completely clear the media database (pluto_media) that won't screw up the keys/indices/etc so that I can rescan in my entire media share without having to rebuild? There are a number of messed up attributes and coverart, so I want to start from scratch and check what it scans in from the id3s...

Users / Nokia N770 as orbiter....
« on: October 12, 2008, 11:43:37 pm »
I know some of the guys have been doing a lot of work on these recently, could somebody point to the most current thread or wiki I can follow to install the latest version? I haven't used my old 770 in a long time, and remember the old process being rather torturous! Manually installing libraries, in and out of red pill mode, blah blah :)

Also, which version of the OS do you recommend I upgrade to? I think it is currently upgraded to the original 800 OS (OS2007?)....
