5011  LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: Assistance as Wiki doesnt match whats on screen on: September 27, 2007, 04:16:20 pm
dude, seriously. look on the linuxmce wiki under GSD (Generic Serial Device).. it provides a web-based interface for sending commands to any serial port based device... all of what I mention below is done via the web interface...

basically, you need to create a device template, that is a climate device (use the pull-downs to select the appropriate device type)..

at which point, you will be walked through a series of checkboxes etc to pick which commands you want to implement, and you'll be given boxes to enter commands to send down the serial port. You can check each command to make sure they work properly, and when you're ready, you can save the device template, and add the device to your system, again using the web based interface.. If it is possible to detect the device over the serial port (say, a specific sequence of commands etc), a plug-and-play script can be created to automatically detect the device as it is plugged into the serial port (this part is manual).

Before I plonk down money on one of these guys, does the system currently support these? or will I need to write a driver?

5013  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Many Many Duplicate video files for videos I don't have keep appearing on: September 27, 2007, 02:37:23 pm
more than likely, it's caused by an open access point, which is exposing a UPnP socket...this is what I experienced when I temporarily opened my firewall for some outside testing of the orbiter software overnight...Other UPnP systems see it, and LinuxMCE goes.. OH, hey, let's import that media....

I had to go in with mysql and delete the offending entries with a DELETE query on the media table with any Path that had /mnt/upnp in it.

so the moral is, please make sure if you expose ports, to close them when you're done.

more than likely, you'll need to create a GSD device template to control the model.

5015  LinuxMCE / Developers / Z-Wave thermostat? on: September 27, 2007, 04:53:55 am
Can I use a Z-Wave thermostat controller as a climate device? or would I have to make a new DCE device?

the closest thing we have to a "standard" over here in the US is ZWave.. (I don't even consider X-10 to be an option).

5017  LinuxMCE / Developers / Pause and Play events? on: September 27, 2007, 04:49:46 am
I am curious.. do I need to trudge through the DCE Router logs to get a PK_Command event to attach to for creating events?

I'm asking because, I want to dim/bright the lights in my living room in response to the play/pause button being toggled.

plodge, sorry for missing it.. for best effect, you REALLY should be using your LinuxMCE box (core) as the internet router, otherwise you lose a lot of functionality (network plug-n-play etc)... as it stands, you'll need to disable the dhcp server from the admin, because you now have two dhcp servers running on your network.

mardoc: install a DVI to VGA adaptor on your DVI port, and connect that way. I'm willing to bet it busts off first time. Please read my other posts on this.

5021  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Quick Question on Receivers/Transmitters on: September 26, 2007, 02:44:51 am
I can only speak in regards to the USB UIRT transmitter... the MCE transciever (IRTrans based) that was embedded in my Zalman HD160 case, didn't work with LinuxMCE (it would recieve, but there was no way to transmit), so I disconnected it and added a USB UIRT. the install was painless and it detected the dongle completely, and when all was said and done, I added a Xantech double-emitter blaster cable out the back, attached them to my TV and cable box, and I was in business. :-D

you may have the same experience with the MCE dongle, not sure.

5024  LinuxMCE / Users / telecom not accepting touch tones on: September 24, 2007, 07:08:44 pm
I am currently using Broadvoice as my VOIP provider, and I was able to successfully get it to register and accept calls.. The attendant answers the phone, and says the individual IVR prompts, but it is not accepting my touch tones from any phone,

I made sure to check my DTMF settings on my cell phone as well, and I am emitting long tones.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

5025  LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: Install experience/Problems from DVD on: September 24, 2007, 06:26:41 pm
Hi all!

Hmmmmm! I think the video is "telling a lie" this is really not so simple as shown in the video- this is my thierd go for linuxMCE - but no luck so far!

I know that this is opensource - donīt see it as a complaint, iīm just frustrated that the video is making it oh so simple and almost laughing at Microsoft (uf i said the word ;-) ) but in MSīs cases the SW works 9 out of 10 times - this is maybe 1 out of 10. But hang in there!

I think the team should use more time to make this simple to get running rather on alarm features and things like that!

Now to my install experience/Problems:

1. Got the DVD started to install hangs after this: Install hangs after /dev/sda5: uuid="3604..." type="swap" on DVD install.
Found out that the DVD doesnīt support SATA, so i got my self an IDE drive - and now we are back in buisness

2. The DVD installs, starts up for the first time - and........... No signal: GFX card: Nvidia 7600GT - TV: LG 37lc2r
This has been the same problem on all versions so far!
Found out that a guy got it working by changing the driver in xorg.conf to NV.

3. Now i get the video from the Video/audio setup - but can only see a small portion of the screen - the only Resolution i can get to work is 720p and i get through the setup by guessing what to do

4. Next stop is grey screen and something about canīt start something - I change the driver back to nvidia again and get past this point and LinuxMCE starts up!

I go through the setup wizzard but only the screen is there - no music, no photos, no TV

So here are my issues i need help on:

1. MS Remote doesnīt work

2. LinuxMCE says that something didnīt start up right, but it seems to work anyway and i canīt find the log file

3. I have to unplug my Logitech wireless dongle and plug it in again every time i start linuxMCE to get my keyboard and mouse to work

4. Linux MCE didnīt find my media files on my Nas server (buffalo terrastation)

5. No TV - myth tv setup hangs my computer

6. VERY low res - the text canīt stay inside the buttons

Can you PLEASE help me get past theese points, because i want to get it to work this time!

Okay, i'll deal with your issues one at a time:

1. what dongle are you using? I am using a USB UIRT, and it is working flawlessly, no configuration needed.

2. what didn't start up, correctly?

3. I use a different wireless keyboard/mouse combo (very rarely, because I use my Fiire chief most of the tiem), from Adesso.. their wireless keyboard/mouse combo that works flawlessly.

4. did you tell it to use LinuxMCE's directory structure? it works best if you do this, and move the files into those directories.

5. very strange..what tuner setup are you using?

6. it's not a question of being low res, it's just a fact of the skin generation process..this will be refined.

as for the video problems you had, did you ever look at the AVWizard page on the wiki? you don't have to blindly press keys to get past a point... the number keys on the top select the resolution and input to use. also it is worth noting that on NVIDIA cards with mixed ports, the first VGA port is always the DVI port with a dongle attached (this is a peculiarity of both the way the cards are designed and NVIDIA's port of the Linux driver.)..so attach a DVI to VGA dongle if you need to... no need to flip flop video driver stuff.
