Users / Core boot time
« on: November 13, 2007, 09:30:08 pm »
im testing mce (hybrid core/md) on an old pc of mine, want to be sure its worth using before I buy a dedicated machine ... (amd 1ghz, 256mb ram, geforce 2 gts)

rebooting the core takes AGES, like 20 minutes ... is this the norm for a core or is it because of the low spec machine ?

thanks for the help, got my lights responding to x11 commands ... nice and easy

What event would I need to create to respond to X10 commands ... ie. if I sent a X10 command A1 from a remote control my pc will receive this signal and issue further X10 commands ... ?

Can somebody explain what software is included with mce for home automation ?  I understand scenes/scenarios exist that you can control with an orbiter or md but how would you create events for an X10 system ? ie.  timed events, events that get triggered by x10 commands, etc ?

Installation issues / Ethernet over power
« on: November 08, 2007, 11:33:21 am »
Anyone tried connecting their media centre, san, media directors using ethernet over power ?

Anyone see any problems with this ?  Ive already figured trying to go for a WLAN solution will be a waste of time ...

Might be an obvious question but im not 100% clued up on linux's capabilities.

I want to go for a hybrid core / media centre which will be positioned in my lounge with my main tv ... doing this because I it will be easier for tv feeds into the core ... I want a small good looking HTPC chassis, which wont be able to hold enough hard drives ...

I already have a linux server used for backups, firewall, proxy, vpn in my study, I would like to load this up with 4 - 5 hard drives running a raid array.  Anybody see any problems with me storing all the media on a different pc to the core ?

when plutohome brings out a new version can you upgrade it in linux mce or do you need to wait for a new linux mce release ?

I have a wireless router and a wireless extender ... brick walls are a bitch.  Signal to my lounge, etc are poor.  I have a single story house, im keen to try and put the wireless extender in the ceiling ... signal should travel better through the soft thin ceilings ...

Lan over power is interesting, here in south africa we have 240v ... so will have to find devices that support this.

How much bandwidth does high def video streaming use ?  ie. how many bits per second ?  I can play with my network and test data transfer rates through the house before investing any real time or money in one solution ?

Ok ive read this article in the usuer manual ... it says buy a squeezebox, plug it in the MCE core will auto detect this and add it to the available devices in your orbiters ... how does this work ? or what technology does the network audio player need to support to work with linux media centre ?  Im assuming you can buy almost any device available but I dont understand the technology and which devices will work as a network audio player ?
