Installation issues / Re: DVD vs CD Installation
« on: March 28, 2008, 09:38:58 pm »
I have just read this topic and think it is relevant to my problem. I installed using the cd's. I have an amd64 Core and an i386 diskless md. The MD disk install fails almost immediately, I'm now guessing it is due to the stuff detailed in this topic. Can someone tell me what I need for a 32bit diskless MD??

Thanks,

Andrew

Installation issues / Re: 0710 beta4 - mythtv
« on: March 28, 2008, 09:30:57 pm »
danielk,

Many thanks for the response. I installed it manually via the pluto deb cache and it picked it up and figured things out for itself.

In the mean time......

I have an ITX box (hp e-pc42) which I tried to boot as a diskless device.

The first time it booted I left it for ages (2 hours) but the screen went black and it never came back. I rebooted it and it said that the router was unavailable. I deleted the device and tried again and it starts the build again but fails almost immediately. Do you know which log files will give me a clue as to why it is failing? Also can you tell me which directories are written to when mce tries to build a diskless image???

Thanks,

Andrew

Installation issues / 0710 beta4 - mythtv
« on: March 27, 2008, 02:08:53 pm »
I just installed 0710 beta 4 because I wanted the amd 64bit version. After install I note that mythtv has disappeared completely. The backend isn't even there.

I didn't have the dvb cards going when I installed.

They are up and running now, so can someone tell me how I install mce mythtv after install?

Thanks,

Andrew

Suspicions confirmed. I changed to IU2 and it all worked again.

Anyone know why the transparency suddenly stopped working in UI3????

I ran the wizard and changed to 480p and it was still black. The gallery has also stopped showing, even though the gallery app. is in the same window so it looks like maybe the transparency has stopped working and the orbiter is blanking out the screens behind

Feature requests & roadmap / Sabayon Linux
« on: December 01, 2007, 12:49:13 am »
After installing MCE and getting it all working I decided to install Beryl for the laugh, fully expecting it to break MCE completely.

I found that other than a couple of minor quirks the 2 complimented each other quite nicely.

Sabayon would therefore seem like the perfect OS with MCE to me. They're both OpenGL front ends and they're both damn good products. An openGL driven desktop combined with openGL MCE could quite easily create something rather special I would have thought. Or am I just dreaming? ;D

Installation issues / Re: Silly AV Wizard

Stingly,

Good tip. I have been trying to change the output to VGA using the CRTx connected monitor card, but no joy. I'm going to take my PC round to my brothers and plug the DVI into his TV. If it does then its LCD TV time.

Not sure why the DVI is the default for this card. Says in the docs that VGA is assumed because most people will be using a PC monitor.

Blair,

Not yet, I swapped the cables at the shop. I think I will buy 2 sets otherwise they will get upset with me coming back every week  :)

Installation issues / DVI-D or dedicated HDMI Component?
« on: November 27, 2007, 12:20:35 am »
Hi all, please someone give me some advice because my brain is starting to fry figuring all this out.

Having read the blurb I bought an Asus M2NPV-VM. Initially I hooked it up via Component but wasn't overly happy with the output and could not get the AV Wizard to complete without the screen disappearing and not coming back (I know my TV supports 720P(native) or 1080i, I selected 720 but noted that the component option doesn't give a refresh rate choice). Screen doesn't say out of range, just goes black and never comes back.

So I decided this maybe wasn't the best option so I went and got a DVI to HDMI converter and hooked it up that way.

Wizard ran ok, set it to 480P (for the time being). Pictures looked great, but DVD playback from my DVD camera was grainy and lower quality than the original DVD player with Scart. My TV says that for a HDMI/DVI input the best resolution is 1024*768, but surly I'm better off going for a 720P solution? otherwise there's going to be rescaling all over the place if/when I start watching HD.

I'm not sure whether to stick with the component tv optput to get the benefits of the inbuilt scaling and filtering or continue horsing around with the hmdi/dvi connection.

Someone please help

Thanks for the reply Zaerc.

I already changed the display config using dpkg-reconfigure but there might be something useful in the troubleshooting guide which I hadn't seem before

Ok, so I built the box, I rebooted, I got the twinkly array of AV Wizard noises followed by black screen.

Hit 2  -twinkly beep beep, black screen. Hit 7, twinkly beep beep, black screen. 2,6 twinkly beep beep, black screen. Getting the picture? because I'm sure not going to.

Using VGA, monitor definitely supports both resolutions.

I am using an NVidia Ti4800SE with UI2. I know 4xxx is not supported but worked fine in 1.1 Also works fine if I swap to another TTY, fire up xwindows and run the linuxmce startup sequence (even runs and completes the damn AV Wizard).

Save the settings, reboot the system..... twinkly beep beep ----- black screen

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Installation issues / Wierd dvb-utils challenge
« on: November 24, 2007, 03:31:38 am »
Ok so here's a question for a dvb guru out there.  ::)

I built an Asus M2NPV-VM 0704 box for my brother for his birthday. Liked it so much, thought I'd give my old MSI 645 Ultra a try with it.

Fairly easy build, so far so good.

Installed a Freecom USB DVB stick into Asus, ran dvb-utils, found local frequency, ran scan, lots of channels, lovely jubily.

Installed same stick into MSI with same firmware, picks up card and installs fine. Used same arial pointing at same transmitter. Ran scan

Didley squat. Not a single channel.

Is there some kind of motherboard hardware dependency that makes a difference to the success of the scan???

Installation issues / Am I just being a dumb ass?
« on: November 01, 2007, 08:57:53 pm »
Hi all,

I installed mce on an i386 and after eventually getting it going liked it enough to go out and buy the M2NPV-VM that everyone harps on about. So far so good with the op install, however......

The install CD gives an i386 installer. I can't find an amd64 version of the disk anywhere, so how exactly are you supposed to install it on this architecture???

Please throw the dummy a bone someone..

Hi all,

I read a couple of posts about pictures not working in v1 so I installed 1.1b2, but cannot view the test pics I copied over. Comes up with the 'no handler for this media in this area' message. I cannot even view the flickr images that are working in the background in pluto gallery. Is it just my build or do pics not work in 1.1b2 either?

Thanks
