Users / MSI Media LIVE HDMI
« on: December 01, 2007, 09:12:02 pm »
Just got my MSI Media Live from Newegg yesterday.
I just got it put together. I got it hooked up via HDMI to my westinghouse 37" HDTV. I booted the pc to check it with a Kubuntu 7.10 live cd.

It boots and the MSI Boot splash does not fit inside the screen (runs off the edges). I looked into the BIOS to see if I needed to set output res or the output (HDMI) But didn't see anything like that in BIOS.
I booted Kubuntu 7.10 and it also ran off the screen.
I am not sure how to fix this. Any clue anyone?

Regards,
Blair

Whats the major difference?

The only thing I have been able to glean is that the one linked above can't do the "follow me" but other than that it works similar?  ???

Thank you everclever.
I had been looking at a similar In Win case on newegg.
The only two things I am unsure of on this case is that I think the add on cards have to be half height. That makes things a pain and more expensive.
***Not sure if half height means for card clearance or the metal piece that connects the card needs to be low profile also.***
I am also nervous buying from a yahoo store that is not the actual shipper for the item.
I appreciate the heads  up.

I linked it from Newegg if anyone wants to read the reviews

I would put the TV card in the Core, but I believe it will work in either.

I just wanted to make sure you saw the Hardware wiki page. If you want to try other stuff great. Please let  us know ow it goes.

Thanks,
Blair

Is that related to the sleep problem mentioned in the newegg comments about the barebones?

First off - Welcome!!!

I have a couple questions about your current and planned setup.

My first question is this. I know you have read the wiki and forums but have you been here?
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Category:Hardware
This will give you a pretty good idea what has been tested and what worked and what didn't. Also if there are any "tweaks" needed to get a certain piece of hardware to work with LMCE.

For you current setup -
I am not very familar with intel chips past P4's.
The Media director only needs 512MB Ram as far as I can tell and anything else would be overkill from the posts I have read.
I am not sure if the Nvidia driver works well with the 8xxx series cards.
I know Realtek is supported.

For your future setup-
I know you chose the intel  Gigabit board. Why not the one off the Hardware wiki that you know is supported? http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Gigabyte_GA-M61P-S3
I don't know intel cpu vs AMD but why not a AMD X2 6000? (to go with the mobo I mentioned above)
You can get away with 1GB ram.
DVD Burners are dirt cheap- LG 20x DVD/RW on Newegg is $25.00
I am not sure about the PSU.
3/ware cards are pretty heavily supported in Linux you should be fine. Make sure if is a hardware raid card. (many people here will debate you on whether or not you need a raid card)
Not sure on the gigabit card. I know I was using a broadcom card with my Ubuntu pc for a while.
Graphics card is not needed if you use the mobo I suggested above.
Tv card. Check Hardware page. - Hauppauge is heavily supported.

Please don't let sway you away from what you where thinking about. If you saw the wiki page already and you want to be the tester for new motherboards and hardware GREAT!!!! thank you!!!  Please let us know how it goes. I am operating on an extremely lean budget so I have to use "known working" hardware.

Best Regards,
Blair

No I don't believe you are alone.
I would like this very much also. I have to believe this is one of major reasons for the "fork". To utilize the power of the base OS and make it accessible from the LMCE package.
see here: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/History

I think LinuxMCE is still in its infancy. In the few months I have been watching it has evolved very much. There are a lot of great people here putting a lot of time and effort to make this better. I think a lot of the focus is still on the Media side since that is the shiny part everyone comes here for. I think the true power of LinuxMCE is in the consolidation of a lot of good projects that work together in harmony.  I think once adding stuff becomes easier LMCE will blossom. I am very happy with some of the very recent annoucements -Mplayer as the media player. I have never been a fan of XINE.
Stay tuned its only going to get better.

Blair

I think you might have missed part of what totallymaxed said.
He said:

I would suggest going for a socket AM2 + onboard 6150 mobo for reduced heat and better performance for I would think a similar price.

Read the two comments about the mobo you selected in reviews on Newegg. One says it has problems with onboard audio to the point the guy wants to RMA it. The next post say the onboard video is horrible.

I have been looking for a AM2 Geforce 6150 mobo with HDMI and have not been successful. I bought a MSI Media Live since it's the only way to get a Geforce 6150 board with HDMI in the US. Please somebody correct me if I am wrong.

Here is the link to the case you selected:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811145004
Did you read any of the reviews of it?

Why not:
Case and Mobo and PSU:(ASUS P1-AH2)  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856110057
CPU: (AMD X2 4000+) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103774
RAM: (Patriot 512MB) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220089
DVD: (LG 20x DVD/RW) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220089
$165+$65+$20+$26 = $276
You can save a couple bucks going with a lesser X2 CPU but for the price it isn't worth it for me.
Just something I threw together. You probably also could shave a couple dollars with the open box ASUS M2NPV-VM and a cheaper case PSU setup.

If you are going to go through the trouble of posting how about some links to the products you are considering? It will help the people reading evaluate your ideas.
My .02

Blair

Installation issues / Re: DVI-D or dedicated HDMI Component?
« on: November 28, 2007, 08:45:20 pm »
Very helpful info. Thanks. I have SPDIF out to surround so I am not so worried about HDMI. I am curious how HDMI is  going to work on the new MSI Media Live I bought for my downstairs setup.

« on: November 28, 2007, 06:11:37 am »
Starting to regret my Hauppauge - 500 purchase.
Thinking I might have been better served by a HDHOMERUN and an HD antenna.
With the Hauppauge I can only capture in SD.
Whats the point when I can get a 720p copy of the show of my choice off an RSS feed and bittorrent within a couple hours of the shows air time. On top of that the commercials are edited out for me.
Is there any chance of incorporating TED into LinuxMCE? http://www.ted.nu/
Looking for something to get/view video podcasts -> Miro???  http://www.getmiro.com/

I read this because I am also curious about the differences in outputs for the ASUS Motherboard. Component vs DVI.

Did you try what Zarec suggested to fix the AV Wizard going "black"?

I was just going to connect my ASUS board via a DVI.

Looks interesting. I have not connected my Nokia 770 to LinuxMCE yet. I am still working out some home wifi issues.
I know the Nokia 770 can be an Orbiter, but could I watch live/recorded tv on it?

Blair

Thanks Marrandy for the address. I will email.
Travla cases are nice I have ran across them a lot when I was looking to do a car PC.
I used ATI until I discovered Linux. After that it has been Nvidia since.

Thanks.

For that price I'll take a MSI Media Live and add my own CPU  - RAM - HD and still come under that price.
