Installation issues / Re: no fdisk on linuxMCD quick DVD install
« on: December 12, 2007, 11:35:27 am »
sudo fdisk works fine from my dvd install if you omit sudo it says fdisk is not installed.
this is something 'us windows guys' have no clue about, I can definitely relate to these problems.

Once I disable the DHCP Server and the Firewall the system, the system stops trying to act as a router and automatically detects the file server and all of the network shares (behaves as a normal computer on the network).
You must disable the DHCP in the router, not the LMCE core ;)
Otherwise LMCE will not work, period...

Public should work fine for a 'media only' share.
I like to use the LMCE folder structure because that structures my media (you have to move the actual files into the new structure though).
Should work, give it some time. read a bit in the wiki and on the forum to become familiar with the usual problems/sollutions. that helps a lot.

You made the shares public? You didn't use the LMCE folder structure?

Legal ?
It's not legal to crack the key. Just as with DVDs under Linux... That's not legal as well (in most countries), as the Encryption Key of the DVD is cracked when you insert it. That's why the lib is not shipped with most Linux Distributions...
Depends wildly on the country you are in, in Norway making copies for yourself, family and friends is entirely legal, and if the medium is not 'copyable' then there are no restrictions against making a program to crack the copy protection. actual legislation says it's illegal to sell copy protected material, but there has been no 'reaction' against the movie and record industry so far.
The DeCSS case here resulted in a total loss for the American movie industry that sued a young individual for distributing and making a UI for deCSS.

UI1 is in some respects a better UI, alltough not as pretty.
I miss the 'play all' button in UI2 among other things.
But I don't understand why they can't release the 'real' drivers for the hardware, like they do automatically if you run M$...
hrmpf

hehehe
To clarify, I have expectations that the new nvidia drivers, new Lirc version and MCE USB-IR drivers is bundled. That is where most of the currently obvious problems comes from. the typical 'I just installed and all I get is a black screen' posts should hopefully be fewer and further between  ;D

well i disabled the onboard nic
(edited)

I guess that's your problem with finding shares, if you had two NICs during install and disabled one now you need to do some configuration in the web admin.
sounds to me like the 3Com NIC is your external network and the onboard NIC that you disabled is your internal network.
LMCE only finds shares on the internal network, and only when DHCP is enabled, and only when there's no other DHCP.

Sounds like you need to read up on 'single NIC install'

Do you have more than one DHCP server enabled? a router or something?

73
Well... he's correct, and when others ask just what UI3 is... there's really no choice...

If a Zonbu will work (zonbu.com) then I would think this could possibly work as well, not for High def content though, and no guarantees from me.
