Actually, as previously stated by others, Gnome works with several window managers, some of which do support compositing. But that's really a moot point since you aren't even using the KDE window manager...

I did test the Orbiter on Sunday, but it failed and I haven't the time to do anymore until now...

All the dependencies (that I aware of) are installed and I copied the fonts over. I still can't figure it out though. The only error message before the terminate says it couldn't find xset, but I'm pretty sure it was doing that before when I got it working.

Any ideas:
Code: [Select]

I'm a little confused on this as currently KDE doesn't even load until after you have the orbiter launch the KDE desktop. Also the KDE window manager isn't used... I'm sure on the development side the QT libraries help out a lot, but you don't need to run a KDE desktop to use them... Since the KDE desktop doesn't need to be running for the operation for the Media Director, I don't see why you can't also use a Gnome desktop. Linux has always been about choice and I don't see any logical reason to limit the choice of which desktop we use.

Users / Re: Internal Network problem
« on: August 19, 2007, 10:29:09 pm »
Hmm, that looks like it would work.

Try manually bringing down each interface:
Code: [Select]
ifdown eth0
ifdown eth1

Then bring them back up one at a time and ping a known address on that interface with:
Code: [Select]
ifup eth0 //or eth1
ping %known address%

If that succeded then next manually launch the filewall script:
Code: [Select]
/usr/pluto/bin/Network_Firewall.sh

That will let us know if the problem is with one particular interface/network driver or a problem with the firewall script.

You don't need to change to VESA drivers to fix this. You can still use UI2 with the Nvidia drivers and 3D acceleration, but alpha-blending most likely won't work. See my thread "X, Transparency, and CPU Usage" for details.

I too had this issue. Although... and this is really strange... At first alpha-blending turned on by itself when I switched monitors and everything was drawing fine... just real slow. Check my "X, Transparency, and CPU Usage" thread for details. Then when I tried to launch the AV Wizard again it got stuck in and endless loop. After rebooting this issue appeared. My solution was to just disable alpha-blending (still UI2) by manually launching the AV Wizard. Again see the other thread for how I did that.

Ok, I'm not sure why transparency was suddenly enabled or what was causing the CPU Usage to spike with transparency. The CPU Usage thing seems like that old Nvidia bug where CPU Usage spikes after a good amount of use (usually at least a few hours to days though). I haven't had a problem with Nvidia and Xorg for a long time though... Of course I'm used to using Gentoo, not Ubuntu...

With that said, I was able to get everything working again, by disabling alpha-blending. In order to do that I had launch /usr/pluto/bin/AVWizard_Run.sh manually from the console. If I tried any other way it got stuck in an endless loop while trying to load X... Also since I have the TV connected to the DVI port the "1" key on the keyboard needed to be held down while the script was loading to force the output to DVI.

Please note that you do not have to choose UI1 (usually) and you should first try UI2 in normal mode (the second option).

I hope this helps others.

I just wanted to mention that I did manage to get the latest deb installed on Hacker Edition. I'm not sure exactly why it wasn't working before, but it is now...

I still have to configure everything. I'm thinking I'll do that tomorrow (if not tomorrow the soon after) and then report back my results.

Updating the hostname is only neccessary if you don't have masterbackend override set. Personally I prefer all videos to go to my large network storage drive, so I have that setting set. If you store all your videos on seperate computers, however, you will need update the hostname for all recorded records.

It sounds like LinuxMCE is trying to take an IP address that's already in use. Have you verified the IP addresses in your network?

Also, it seems like you aren't setting this up to be your dhcp server (only one NIC). By default LinuxMCE is going to try to bring on the DHCP server and take over your network... that would fail if miserably if 192.168.*.1 (192.168.80.1 by default) is used and half work if there is another DHCP server on the network subnet (very bad). At that point it can assign an IP address to one device that another device is already using... effectively killing your network.

Developers / Re: Best file system?
« on: August 15, 2007, 12:47:09 am »
XFS is fast, but I wouldn't use it as the OS's filesystem as it has a lot of cache issues making it far less reliable during a crash. I have used XFS for my storage drives as it is very fast at deleting large files, which is very important for Myth and the like. However, I won't do it again. I have lost a lot of files because of XFS and it doesn't have the ability to resize well, so if you use RAID (like lvm2) then it's definitely not the right choice! I think ext3 is a sane choice.

Same here. I found a solution for this at http://mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-23.html#ss23.5. Just back up your database and then restore only the few tables it lists under "Moving your data to new hardware". If your current MythTV install is a new version (this is likely, especially if you're a Gentoo user) then you'll have to modify the sql before it will restore. I had to remove the last column (and the values for it) from the record and recorded tables.

Having to hit escape twice for a graphical login prompt doesn't make sense to me. I think I'm missing something. Could you take me step by step what happens during boot (just before and after this issue)?

I have had some issues with Linux in general not bringing up X for graphical login, but those issues are usually because either X crashed or an error was displayed on one of the rc scripts (the first scripts that run during boot). If the later happens then correcting the problem mean correcting whatever rc error popped up and/or you can press alt+f7 to get back to X.

I'm not sure what you mean by "auto-sense" what's in the media folder. LinuxMCE does know what kind of media it is. Actually, it may take a little while for the UpdateMedia script to flag everything in the database, but I know it does do this... Sometimes even when I'd rather it not...

Micheal, can try starting the Orbiter through Xterm? This will allow it to display any error messages that it might need to and give you a log file to look at. You can start the orbiter with the following command (replace %CoreIP% and %OrbiterNumber% with the correct values):
Code: [Select]
Orbiter -r %CoreIP% -d %OrbiterNumber% -l orbiter.log
