Back in 2004 I started a personal research about HA softwares. The topic has been always fascinating to me, and moreover at that time I started to have plans to renovate an old house to live in so I wanted to make up my mind on the best possible choice.

I started with Misterhouse, but as I was living in a small rented apartment I did not make any special arrangement with lighting (just some CM11 devices). System was indeed nice, WAF factor was not so bad.

Several factors pushed me to keep on searching for more HA project, with the idea to choose one that could be a possible base to build a business upon. I found a lot of project, but basically they were kind of "home breed" and therefore not really suitable.

Reading Misterhouse mailing list I stumbled on a post of a guy (that turned out to be Tinia/Bulek) stating that Pluto was switching to Open Source, then I gave it a try.

Learning curve of Pluto isn't a breeze, expecially if you don't have robust linux skill and expecially if you choose to start with hardware that does not fit exactly. So I had to fight a bit to get my VIA EPIA M10000 hybrid to work, but in the end it has been a pleasant fight. Pluto was covering definitely better the multimedia aspect and it overall seemed way more powerful to me, so I started to write a rude GSD to drive a Weeder I/O board to control some light and a simple surround system. This increased dramatically WAF factor, so I was allowed to buy a new server and switch VIA hybrid to simple MD.
The idea was then to get as much confidence with system as possible, to study some C++ and OO programming and afterwards to start with some "under the hood" approach with the codebase. Unfortunately Pluto momentum started to progressively fade, and it seemed to me that I was putting a lot of effort basically on a dead horse. So I put everything in kind of "suspended mode".

Reading from time to time Pluto Forum I found out in summer 2007 that project was forked, and this pointed me here. I joined the forum and as soon it was released I switched my Pluto system do LMCE 704.
In the mean time renovation works for my house were already started, but it was not too late to make some change to wiring and lighting system in order to set up an infrastructure relying on LMCE.
Now I'm living in my new house since last july, my LMCE 710 system is still a small one (1 hybrid and 1 MD) but nevertheless in my spare time I wrote a rude and dirty GSD driver to integrate my lighting and electric shutter system (heavyly based on Dan Damron Insteon driver structure).

I've plenty of thing still to be done on my system (improving GSD, implementing anti-intrusion and video surveillance, integrating telephony, integrating different remotes, integrating LCD devices, integrating iButtons, speech synthesis ...) and no time to get them done.
To be honest in this particular economic situation I don't really regret not to have spare time ... but also I hope to find a better balance between my family and my job that allow me to exchange back something to LMCE, that is probably the best way to thank those great guys that are doing such an incredible work.

just my 0,02 ....

I also happen to use my LMCE storage to download files when travelling, but since I did not like the idea to have an ftp port open to my core I followed a different path.
Basically I use putty to connect via SSH to my core, tunneling through it all the port I want to access.
This way I can remotely and safely access to file system but also I can run a regular orbiter, browse webadmin site, and so on.
As SSH is running by default on your core, you're pretty much done. Just make sure that port 22 on your firewall/router is properly redirected to internal IP of your core.

I use psftp (one of the putty utility, a command line tool ...) to download files, but I guess that you may tunnel port 21 via SSH to your core so you point any ftp client to port 21 of your local host to reach whatever file on your remote NAS.

just a brief update about using last MO on my E65.

Display size is now correct, nevetheless I'm experiencing an issue when displaying media list. Basically all media titles are displayed in a microsopic char size, so they are unreadable.

Also in the main screen when I press the right button to change room a popup appears with some option to exit app.

Still facing issue with submenu (i.e they displayed somehow "shifted" by one position). This is the same issue I was facing also with javaMO so I suspect it has to do with my orbiter. Will try to delete and rebuild from scratch and let you know.

Since I mentioned it, after installing last version of MO on my E65 suddenly JavaMO stopped working. It basically starts but it shows me a blank screen, even if it accepts keystrokes and seems to react properly (i.e. if I press keys for a lighting scenario, the proper action is executed). Maybe it has something to do with the local caching?

I just installed the last version of your Symbian MO on my E65, and I can confirm that it is working. Picture does not fit the phone screen, but probably this is the sizing issue your were mentioning on your post.
Also in your demo video the menu appears to be not on full screen ... so basically it's ok.

I noticed that even with native MO I can't use the red button to stop media. If I press red button MO exits, and media keeps playing.

I get this behaviour also with JavaMO, and I thought that maybe java cannot catch all keypresses.

I suspect instead that this may have something to do with the phone design, because on this phone I installed also TomTom Navigator, and every time I press red button TomTom exits immediately ...

I gave a try to both versions of your JavaMO on my Nokia E65.

One thing that I noticed immediately is that when I go to media submenu, choices are "shifted" i.e I see:

Basically there's nothing on square numbered 3, but if I press 3 key I go to audio submenu, and if I press 4 I go to Pictures submenu, and so on ....

This is the same in both versions.
In the second version I can't change room, i.e. if I press the key to change room nothing happens (in your first version this was anyway working fine).

When navigating Videos, I see the list by filename, when navigating audio I see list by performers.

When navigating media list (video or audio) pressing back button bring me to initial menu and not one level back.

When playing any media, if I press red button to stop it I exit app instead.

I'm still playing around with huge list, but probably I don't have enough songs to trigger the "special list".

Good job anyway, MO seems faster than previous one and seems more stable.

I've just installed PlutoMO on my E65, installation goes fine till the end but when I try to run the app nothing happens.

No error messages, no splash screen, simply nothing.

Hi all

I downloaded the S60v3 PlutoMO and tried to install on my Nokia E65.

Here I report the relevant messages it throws during installation, as a references to whoever may understand what's going on.

First off it gives a protection warning saying that application is not reliable and may be harmful, but I choose continue and all is fine.

Then it shows me application details: PlutoMO, version 2.00(0).

Then it says:
Application not compatible with the phone. Continue anyway?

I choose continue and then next message is:

Component Series60ProductID is missing. Continue anyway?

I choose OK, then installation seems to go on for a while but it fails saying that it is not possible to install a protected application from a unknown provider.

Note that my phone is set to accept unsigned apps.

Hope this helps to understand what is going wrong.

I remember this post, if I'm not wrong it was a discussion between aaron.b and tinia/bulek.

At that time there were several threads like this, as more people were approaching Pluto and were willing to understand the underlying concept.

I also remember that aaron.b answers were usually very detailed, so it is very likely that useful informations can be retrieved from those posts as well as from some posts of other Pluto developers of that time

I'm also very rude with Ruby, so I don't know how much I can help.

Looking at the code in my GSD device I can see a slightly different situation:

As you can see I have not "then" statement.
If the syntax is wrong I expect that you should have a clear error at GSD compiling, but I guess this is not exactly the case. Nevertheless you claim to have a strange error regarding the method cmd_ReceiveCommandsForChilds, that in the end shouldn't be there.

Just my 0,02 (maybe less ...)

I got a similar issue, where I also had my GSD device that suddenly stopped working.

Well, not really suddenly, I was working on it and probably I made something wrong when saving the device settings.

In the end the reason was really trivial: the "COM Port on PC" parameter was blank.

Probably during update I did not realize that the proper parameter value was overwritten, and I spent a lot of time to figure it out.
