Users / Install looked good; I get a black screen(w/ mouse pointer) after reboot.

I installed ubuntu and linuxmce. The install looks like it went fine.
Using the TV as the monitor, I can see that the reboot is looking good. All the services seem to start up fine. I know the TV is getting a signal because after reboot I get a black screen with movable mouse pointer. In addition, I can Ctrl-Alt-F1 into console just fine so.
The admin web site seems to also be working fine.
Is this black screen normal behavior? If not, where are the logs so I can debug?
