Installation issues / Installing a new harddrive
« on: February 05, 2008, 09:54:40 pm »
I've installed an extra drive to my system which is encrypted using LUKS...

I decerypt it at boot and name it sdc1_crypt and it shows up just fine under /dev/mapper/sdc1_crypt

LMCE wants to automatically add /dev/sdc1 so I chose No, and never for this device.

I then manually added the harddisk in the webadmin panel.

Advanced -> Configuration -> Devices

Opened CORE and clicked add new child device

Named it "Internal HDD (sdc1_crypt)" and picked the device template 1790. The same as the other hard drives have.

Filled out all the input boxes in the same way as the other hard drives are.

Block device "/dev/mapper/sdc1_crypt"
File system "ext2"

The Free Disk Space in Megabytes gets updated just fine.

The disk gets mounted as /mnt/device/38 after a reboot and I can use it.

But then, suddenly, after about 5 minutes it get unmounted and the folder /mnt/device/38 gets removed.

Then it won't show up again until I reboot the system and then works for another 5 minutes before it just disappears.

There are no information in dmesg or in /var/log/syslog...

Does anyone have a clue to why it just gets removed after a short while?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the device if I run fsck on it, and all files are there if I manually mount it in a manually created tmp folder. So it seems the LMCE thinks that it shouldn't be there. I just can't figure out why nor why it works for a short period...

Installation issues / Installation with disk encryption
« on: February 05, 2008, 12:23:22 am »
I've just successfully installed LMCE 7.10b3 using KUbuntu Gutsy Alternate install disk and installed it on an encrypted disk.

Works without any problems, the onlyt hin worth mentioning is that the non alternate KUbuntu live CD will also be need in the last step of the LMCE setup process.

Works like a normal LMCE system once it is installed, with the exception that a HD password has to be entered during the boot process.

Users / Fiire Chiefs
« on: January 30, 2008, 11:42:13 am »
Hi,

I've just got my long awaited Fiire remotes. I've understood that the system can tell a difference from the two. I did, in the advanced config, assign each remote to a LMCE user. I figured that this was what was needed for LMCE to tell a difference about who is currently using the system.

However the orbiter does not show that it has changed active user when I switch remote. Can this be accomplished? I want to be able to do so and also setup automatic filters.

I want this to make it possible for my daughter to navigate among the videos herself without having to know the whole directory structure. Teaching a five year old to use the video button on the remote and also to select a movie from the thumbnails is quite possible but also teaching her to navigate to the child stuff in the directory structure would be to hard.

So I want the movie contents to just list her stuff whenever she press the movie button on her remote...

Am I hoping for too much here?

/p

PS. I've search the wiki about Fiire Chief stuff but I couldn't find much there...

I am sorry if this is out of the scope of this forum, it is not intended to be neither a flame nor an advertisement. Merely a question since I don't get an answer through the proper channel...

I know that there are people in here that have bought things from Fiire and I would like to know if they normally are really slow both with sending things and answering mails.

I ordered a few remotes last week, in the beginning of that week. The tracking page at Google still says, "Not shipped". I've sent Fiire a mail asking about this, no response...

The money has been transferred and are no more on my bank account...

So... Do any of you know if this is normal? Can I stop worrying? Will I get any remotes before Christmas 2008? Could it be that the Google tracking page just is bad at keeping track of things?

Any input would be much appreciated!

Installation issues / NVIDIA 7600 Installation issues
« on: December 18, 2007, 12:01:24 am »
I've just "upgraded" from an ATI card to a NVIDIA card in the hopes of running the UI with the full GL interface...

The card installs happily and I reinstalled LinuxMCE from the bottom, DVD install and the HD was totally reformatted...

Everything goes well up until the point where the AVWizard is supposed to start, I just get a blank screen and my monitor goes to sleep mode.

I figured it might be a video driver issue so I followed the video setup guid in the Wiki and downloaded the latest NVIDIA driver.

telinit 1, and then installed the video driver, and after that 'reboot'

Well, I still just get the result with having a monitor that goes to sleep.

It is a standard monitor that is capable of any resolution up to 1600x1200 so it shouldn't have any problem with displaying any type of output.

I tried pressing all combinations from 1-9 with the twittering sound in between. My monitor wakes up and shows text mode for a short while and then back to sleep. I guess this is when X restarts after changing video settings.

I thought using NVIDIA cards should be the smooth way to do this? I never had any such problems with my old ATI card (9800 series)... ;o)

Users / Home automation
« on: December 09, 2007, 04:37:20 pm »
I've been reading some on the CM11A / RCA HC60RX devices and it seems that they are limited to controling / reciecving events from at most 16 devices. I sounds quite limited to only be able to read / write events to 16 devices in an entire home. I guess that I'd be able to use up that in just on room with all the thing I have planned to use LMCE for. So I have a few questions for all the clever guys here ;o)

1. Can one the Core handle more than one CM11A / RCA HC60RX unit? Like connecting three to be able to controll 48 device with different house codes?
2. The above must be possible right, what if my units are on different power phases? I guess that the controll signals can't travel ove power phases? That should also mean that I can have same house codes on different power phases, right?
3. Do the home security system, motion detectors etc use X.10 as well? That would make the 16 unit limit even more restrictive...
4. Are there other protocols supported by LMCE? Any wireless homeautomation systems? (supported is important)
5. Is it possible to control lights atc both with normal wall buttons and with LMCE? Is it possible for LMCE to know the state of the lamps in if the lamp has been powered on/off with a wall button. This assumes that the wall button uses X.10 to switch on/off the lamp.

Has anyone written an extensive homeautomation wiki/guide/etc? I am very interested in taking my media system a few steps forward to get all the coolnes it can deliver ;o)

Any help is much apritiated!!

/Peter

Users / xine not playing dvds
« on: November 23, 2007, 10:41:14 pm »
I tried to install the dvdcss package by running the script /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh

The script executed just fine - but - now xine won't play any dvd's anymore...

It did complain, before, that libdvdcss wasn't installed if trying to play a comersial disc. Now it won't even do that...

I get a black screen when I try to play a dvd and then it just exits out to the Orbiter screen without errors... I did at least get the disc's main menu before...

I guess something got majorly broken when I ran that script... Is there any way to reinstall xine and it's components from scratch?

I've already tried apt-get install xine-ui and apt-get install libxine-extra-modules.... same black screen...

Any advice not including reinstall the whole system would be much apritiated! ;o)

---- NOTE ----

I've tried running Xine within KDE now and that works just fine... It even play that comersial disc,. This make me believe that the problem isn't really xine related but I don't know where to look... Are there any log anywhere that shows what happens when I try running a dvd from the Orbiter?

Users / Change to OpenGL in WebGUI
« on: November 22, 2007, 10:44:07 pm »
Hi,

I am trying to change my gui to OpenGL in my Orbitor, from the simplest version.

I want to do so using the WebGUI since I am afraid that the Wizard will mess up some of my other custom made setting if I use that one.

The options OpenGL and the Blended option are however shadowed in my web browser so I can't change them.

I have a Radeon OpenGL capable card not using the fglrx driver.

Are there any other way to change this apart from using the Wizard or the web GUI?

Thanks!

/Peter

Installation issues / Turtle Beach Catalina
« on: November 20, 2007, 04:35:10 pm »
I've got a Turtle Beach Catalina sound card in my LinuxMCE computer.

I makes the AV Wizard hang on the last step if I choose to use Digital SPDIF output.

I get to the DTS sceen and then it dies. I can here the two channel music, DD and DTS is silent and then it crashes with reboot as the way out...

So I am force to chose analog out :-(

This card can produce both DD and DTS in Linux, I know this since I've used it for about 2 years in Myth... Last 6 month with Ubuntu...

I don't see why it makes the AV Wizard crash...

Installation issues / ATI Radeon 9600 TV-Out
« on: November 20, 2007, 04:31:05 pm »
Hi,

I've got a Radeon 9600 card in my computer. I tried first to use S-Video (I don't really want to use this but it seemed to be the most easy choice).

I chose S-Video PAL-B in the AV-Wizard (also tried PAL-G). TV is just "noisy" (wrong refresh rate/resolution), tried a lot of different resolutions without luck. So it doesn't seem that any of the pre-defined resolutions work with my card. (Grub and the kubuntu load logo is the only thing that I get on my TV, it gets "noisy" as soon as X loads).

I had no luck at all...

Next plan, which I prefer, was to use my RGB->SCART cable that I've been using in my old installation with pure MythTV. That one produces video quality far better than S-Video.

I just copied my old xorg.conf into /etc/X11 on my LinuxMCE installation chmod'ed the file to r--r--r and rebooted the machine. LinuxMCE does sadly enough overwrite that file even though I've made it write protected. Is there any way to protect this file so I can use my custom setting that I know work.

I can't produce ANY output at all on my TV right now so the setup is pretty much useless; only sitting with a 17" monitor next to my big fat TV...

Would be happy for any help!

Users / Separating asterisk and mysql from the core
« on: May 13, 2007, 04:28:59 pm »
Is there any way to do this?

I already have a really heavy machine running as a MySQL server in my network at home, I also already have an Asterisk server running that is properly configured.

I would make perfect sense to use those instead of heavy that extra load running on my LinuxMCE core.

Have anyone done this before?

Main concern is to move MySQL. Is there a single point to change where LinuxMCE looks for the db or would I have to change 100 different config files?

/p

Users / Custom resolution
« on: May 13, 2007, 04:25:47 pm »
I just read in some post that the resolutions available via the setup gui are the only ones available? Is there really no way to put in a mode line that you know works?

I have my TV connected via a RGB-SCART cable and none of the resolutions in LinuxMCE support that. I would hate not to use that cable since the image quality is FAAAR better than any composite or svideo cable.

Can I change the modelines in xorg.conf.pluto or will that one be overwritten? Can I add a modeline in any database table to have it available in the web gui?

/peter
