It seems that not many people use Linuxmce with a security system. Does anyone know how easy/hard to add a driver for a new security system?
Try to look for existing examples. If I remember right, Apex Destiny support is written in GSD/Ruby and maybe this could give you idea.

I have no idea how hard it is - if you have not so many features on device and its Rs232 protocol well documented, I guess this is pretty easy task.

Hi,

I'm also curious if RC1 includes update mechanism, so further updates would be much easier than clean reinstallation as it is now ?

Installation issues / Re: 2 Network cards needed for core ?
« on: July 25, 2007, 10:08:16 am »
Hi,

don't forget the other possible side of the medal. If something goes wrong with your network on Core, then all your local network could be dead. I had this problem and then I sweared that Core will never be master firewall/router again. But I agree that you can fork special small network with MDs and other Core related devices and let the Core be the master for them. Currently I'm running Pluto and somehow it sits for few minutes in network starting phase - and it's a pitty cause LAN doesn't work till Core is fully booted...

Hi,

sorry, but since release is aproaching, I'd like to bump this one as it would be convenient if those contributions could get into LMCE's database.

Anyone from developers willing to help ?

Installation issues / Re: ATI Remote Wonder
« on: July 15, 2007, 01:04:49 am »
Hi,

some time ago I had this remote working under Pluto, but :
if I remember right, I had to do few things :
- disable kernel module that makes RW acting like mouse
- add Ati Remote Wonder as lirc remote
- stock configuration file didn't work for me, so I recorded new one and I guess contributed back into Pluto database
- I also remember that lirc was not working and I ran out of ideas, but then after few reboots it started to work - no clue why...

So maybe you should try to get it working with lirc manually, record buttons and see where the problem is...

Users / Re: Do I understand LMCE properly?
« on: July 10, 2007, 01:45:13 am »
Hi,

IMHO lack of response mean that it's quite hard to answer fully to your questions right now....

LMCE is pretty immature, we're all waiting for 1.1 release that would be a bit more completed and maybe offer solid base for further work.

At this time, a lot of your questions go into "I'm not sure about an answer if I don't see it functioning first"....

« on: July 09, 2007, 11:08:21 pm »
I agree I wish I could find something with the functionality of both wrapped into one.

I could run both. Using LinuxMCE soley for the media content/ cams / pbx  and Misterhouse mainly for x-10 / weather / etc.

Blair

I think it would not be too hard, but I guess it would be much easier if few guys familiar with MH and Perl and some with LMCE get together... On LMCE side we just need clean way of showing things on Orbiters (weather, temperatures, support for devices that MH controls,etc...). On MH side we need simple listener and few modules to connect to LMCE or Pluto....

Any guys around willing to tackle this ? I can help (I'm pretty familiar with both system), but currently just don't have anough time to do it by myself... I'm also lousy programmer, so experienced Perl guy would be of tremendous help...

« on: July 09, 2007, 10:58:51 pm »
Hi,

AFAIK upgrade possibility as we know it from Pluto will be included in formal 1.1 release. So I guess new installation will be needed for 1.1, but not anymore after that...

Hi,

I think that you don't have to choose - you can use both of them - I also plan to do the same. Misterhouse is really nice backend, quite easy to learn and customize... LMCE is great GUI, with probably crippled backend functionality, so I guess using both of them would make a nice combination...

See http://wiki.linuxmce.com/index.php/Misterhouse

I can help, if you decide to go that route...

The CN700 / Via based MB is the problem. There may be a workaround coming but many people have had problems getting the VIA stuff to cooperate with Linux past basic computing. I got most of the way with a CX700 and then both the video and audio drivers weren't working. Looking deeper there was a tedious process to build both with no indication on the via boards that it would actually work.  I decided to wait since I know the developers are looking at the Via platform and they will make something with a higher chance of working.

Once you build/install Openchrome then then CN700/CX700/CLE266 boards work fine in our experience with LMCE.

Andrew

Hi Andrew :

Could you please give some more of your experiences with Openchrome and Vias and more information, how to get this going
(building Openchrome) ?

Thanks in advance,

Developers / How to change house mode from external systems
« on: July 04, 2007, 11:17:47 pm »
Hi,

I'm thinking about most convenient way of syncing certain kind of informations between LMCE and home automation system I have.

For instance :
- I'd like to set House mode in either system and then propagate new state into another system. For instance, user comes into house and types PIN code on one of LCD keypads of automation system. Now I'd like to put house into Unarmed mode. How can I do this ? Can I send DCE message for this ?

- I have Volume up/down controls on automation keypads and would like to propagate volume changes to LMCE that is playing certain media in that room. How to do that ?  Can I get information for instance of current volume level from DCERouter or any other SW device ? How to ?
How can I change volume of MD from external devices - possible with DCE messages ?

- I'd also be happy to discuss with other users about possible solutions, cause together we can certainly get to better solutions....

Hi,

I still didn't make any test in this direction, but since I'm complete newbie regarding Xorg, sessions and inputs devices, I wonder if it's possible to have 2 screens with two input devices (touch USB for touchscreen, and maybe Gyration mouse for another proper onscreen Orbiter).

As far as I remember this was a major pain to do 2-3 years ago, and I wonder if something changed in this area.... Also I'd only need graphics acceleration on screen that would output to TV (Gyration mouse as input device) and no acceleration on touchscreen, where I'd output only UI1 without media feature (plain remote Orbiter).

Anyone with more info in this direction ?

Thanks in advanced,

regards,

Rob.

There is an advanced interface for Asterisk that gives to good access for setting these things up. Advanced-configuration-phone setup-settings-add trunk (if you don't already have one) .  You probably won't need the IAX stuff. You would go into Trunks and add the section after general before extensions to it. There are others much more expert in Asterisk that I am but starting from that and looking at the existing settings got me on the air. Getting a Grandstream 488 working with it to connect my existing phones was more of an adventure I will post if anyone is interested. With much trial and error I even got my Nokia e-70 to work with it.

Every piece of information is valuable to us, users. Please post to Wiki, about your procedures...

Rob,

I can't offer you much help, although I can see no reason why it shouldn't work if you can somehow tell it a different device ID and core IP.
The core will generate an Orbiter interface for a particular device ID that will only work with that Core, so if you do that on each core then as long as you can tell it the Core IP (Which you can) and the device ID (which is the bit I can't remember) then there should be no reason why it shouldn't work.

Is this what you have tried?
Exactly.

On a side note, how have you set up your two cores? Different subnets using different hubs/switches? Is one of them still acting as a gateway? Is DHCP still running on both?

...

I assume you are running both as an evaluation to see which to proceed with, is this correct?

Darren
Yeap, but I don't see how DHCP would influence my tests, cause I set them to existing ip and ID.

Rob.
