Users / Diskless media director boots halfway

Hello,

I'm trying to get a media director booting (my main system is a hybrid, but I would also like remote media director systems) from the network.  DHCP is working, TFTP is working and it begins to boot.  About 15 seconds into it it stops.  The system isn't hanging, I can scroll up and read boot messages, but it just doesn't go any further.  The last message puts eth0 down:

That is the very last 3 lines.  I am fairly comfortable with Linux but don't really know how to proceed with this.  The system is a Commell LV-667T which has a Via CN400 (unichrome) chipset and a VT1625 TV Out Encoder on it.  It is connected via S-Video to my Sony Wega CRT TV (somewhat old school).  I've gone over the directions on setting up a diskless MD several times. 

I've thought maybe I have to build openchrome and install it on the MD image.  I may try that by doing a chroot from the Core (which is also running a Via based system from Jetway) and doing the build, but I'm not entirely sure that is the problem as I don't think the system is continuing to boot beyond that point.

I may be overlooking the obvious, but I can't seem to figure out what that obvious is.  Any hints are very welcome.

Developers / KDE a little overkill?

Hello,

Just looking for some discussion on the choice of DE.  I realize previously it was Gnome which wasn't (isn't) exactly "light" but I find that KDE is considerably more overkill.  It requires unnecessary system resources for a full system solution (LMCE "take over" install) to run KDE in addition to the Core applications and any other server applications that may exist on an 'always on' type system.  I'm curious why Xubuntu wasn't the chosen candidate for the move from mainstream Ubuntu as it is considerably less system resource 'hogging' and still provides access to the packages necessary to build LMCE?

I'm not trying to criticize, but rather trying to find the rationale on why KDE (Kubuntu) was selected over any other option that the *Ubuntu team offers.  In addition, I'm interested in any information on utilizing Xubuntu (or even Fluxbox on Kubuntu) rather than KDE based Kubuntu to carry out my LMCE install/system.

Installation issues / Smoothwall integration?

Hello!

I've been eyeballing LinuxMCE for a little while and Pluto for even longer.  Once I saw the video on google video (actually I saw it another website but it's easiest to find on google) I really decided to start looking into what it takes to do it.  I'm pretty confident I have got enough of the right hardware to get started, but I have a few preliminary questions:

1.  I run a stupidly confusing network.  It would be far too difficult for me to modify my wired connections and basically it just involves a lot of questionably placed switches (not routers or hubs).  To my point...  I am wondering if LinuxMCE has an easy to configure/use/modify firewall in it?  Right now I have a really nice small Smoothwall box as my router/firewall/DHCP/TFTP system and am wondering if LinuxMCE will be a drop in replacement for that (mostly wondering if it has an easy to work with firewall) or if I'll be shutting off *some* services but not all and running the 2 devices side-by-side?

2.  I have a pretty decent MythTV arrangement.  A single master backend and several frontends one of which is netbooting.  Will I be able to move the single master backend to a slave backend to keep all the recording data intact and not have my recordings turn into their filenames?  Will the netbooted frontend just *work* once I install MCE (assuming I just disable my Smoothwall setup all together?)?  Basically, will I lose any of my existing MythTV functionality?  I'm hoping for all gravy and no lumps. 

3.  I have just a little bit of confusion on connectivity.  I have enough Bluetooth adapters for all of my systems.  Does this mean I can forego any IR or Serial arrangements?  I see that a specialized (somewhat expensive) switch that includes IR and Serial ports is suggested (something like GS-110 comes to mind but I can't quickly find the wiki page that talks about it).  If I go all Bluetooth (just for control, I have wired ethernet for connectivity) does that mean I can ignore any IR info?  I do have a projector as one of my displays and it has a serial connector on it (which I assume means I can have my LinuxMCE system in that room control it) but for now I am not interested in that (awesome) feature.  Is that about the extent of why I would want the rather expensive serial/IR/switch device?  If I don't include it now, will it be painfully difficult to integrate later? 

4.  Light control.  Looks very awesome!  High "wow" factor, but low usability factor, for me personally.  So I'm wondering, (subectively of course) if it's worth it.  How difficult is it to get it working, what are some of the costs I might expect, and do any lights work (is it a plug replacement or a bulb replacement or what...)?  I briefly have read about Zwave but nothing difinitive really seems to be available to the average joe consumer with a lot of time, a little bit of extra money, and a desire to learn.

That is all I can think of for now but I am sure I have more things since I thought I'd be asking 5 questions total and I only have 4
