What about the part...

If I choose to boot into LinuxMCE in order to set up a recording for tonite and then restart and boot into Windows XP in order to surf the web or play a game... the show won't record right?

They are obviously two seperate operations systems and processes don't run while booted into another?

Hmmm... missed that part of your question! Any dual-boot system by definition will only be running one of the OS at any given time ;-)

As someone else has said already you might want to try VMware as a way of running multiple concurrent OS's simultaneously... however you will take a performance hit from sharing the processor and from the virtualisation itself.

Would a Z-wave thermostat work? All I can find in the Wikis it lights and PIRs. Has anyone used one yet? If Z-wave is a no go, what kindof setup are people using now for thermostats?

In principle a Z-wave thermostat will work. But currently the lmce-0704 z-wave binary only knows about lights & PIR's.

I have never used LinuxMCE before but have used a few different Ubuntu versions and enjoyed them.  I've futzed around with different Windows Media program and haven't found one I love.

Is there a way to install LinuxMCE without disturbing my current Windows XP installation?  I am not ready to make a full transition to Linux.  I do understand the idea of dual booting but I think I need an installation CD and my HP didn't come with them.  Even still... that would reformat my drive.

If I do dual boot... and set a recording with LinuxMCE, it wouldn't record unless I was booted into LinuxMCE right?  If I set it and then switched to Windows XP it wouldn't record?

Yes a dual boot Windows Xp / lmce-0704 setup is easy to setup. Dont use the lmce-0704 quick install DVD iso though as that will reformat your whole drive.

On an existing Windows XP machine with plenty of spare drive capacity just insert the Kubuntu 7.04 Live CD and boot from it. When the Kubuntu Live CD desktop appears click the 'Install' icon on the desktop and follow the instructions to create a dual boot system. Next use the lmce-0704 CD installer discs to install lmce onto your Kubuntu 7.04 installation and follow the installation procedure carefully.

Now you will have a dual boot system that will boot first into the Grub menu where you will be able to choose Kubuntu/lmce or Windows XP to boot into.

Hope this helps.

Shouldn't that be eth0 and eth0:0?  I had no eth1 untill I plugged in the second NIC.

Yep... typo sorry :-)something

It had not been my experience until the latest build. Now on a single NIC install it still assigns eth0 and eth1. That seems to only be changeable in the devices-core page of the web admin. Once sorted the rest can be managed from the network page.

You need both eth0 and eth1 on a single physical NIC install so that you can have an external and internal IP - eth1 is a virtual NIC used to do this.

It doesn't always work. There are several places that may need editing depending on what you want to do. There are settings under devices-core for id'ing the NICs that are important when switching from 2 to 1 nic. There are settings in KDE Suystem that can be used to set and change ip addresses and there is the web panel and the file available from the startup app.

I have had the most success starting from the devices-core settings (be careful or you can hose the system) and then the admin panel and then restart the system. But to just set an ip for a nic that is properly identified the admin is the easiest and most straightforward.

Well that is definitely not our experience at all. We always configure our cores using Web Admin and they are all currently single NIC configs. We have more than 15 different cores managed/config'd that way and have done, I would guess, well in excess of 150 installs now without a single network related problem using this method.

Installation issues / Re: Problem playing DVD's
« on: August 19, 2007, 12:09:00 pm »
I waited almost 2 hours ( I went to the movies) and the MD still said it needed DVD CSS even though the orbiter and the setup wizard said it was already installed.  I run the script and in about 1 min it was fixed.

I did have to manually install id-my-disc as well.  I have yet to be able to install any software via orbiter.  I am not sure why, but nonetheless I am up and working well.

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Rob,

Glad that got things working for you. I know the lmce devs know about this issue as i have reported this too them... lets hope they get a fix soon.

Regards

Andrew

Thanks for your effort

Hello

How can i customize the UI of my hybridcore so that it only shows the Icons for Media ?
Is it possible to deactivate the server-Components like asterisk ? My machine is equipped only with 256 MB Ram and the Desktop is veryy slow

thanks for your effort

olliko

There is no simple way to do UI customisation in UI1 or UI2 at the moment or to omit server components (it would be possible to edit the lmce launch scripts that launch the various components I guess or more modify there init.d scripts)... get more RAM is a suggestion worth considering. 512mb on MD's and 1gb on Core/Hybrids is what we configure.

I would imagine that disabling server components coul

Installation issues / Re: Fail on installation
« on: August 18, 2007, 08:41:37 pm »
I attempt to install with the LinuxMCE Quick install DVD and it fails as it goes through the installation.
I get to the option to select which drive to install it to.
I select the drive and it sets up the partition (inodes and stuff) and then states it created the filesystem and returns both drive identifiers (hdb1 '/' and hdb5 'swap').

I'm not sure what's going wrong.  I also go to CTRL-ALT-F8 and the last thing it states was initializing was:
"Running local boot scripts /etc/rc.local" and never progresses any further.

I have had Ubuntu and MythTV both on this box before so I don't believe it's the hardware causing an issue.

Any help is sincerely and greatly appreciated.

We've installed lmce-0704 from the DVD iso numerous times now on different i915/i945 & i965 Cores without problems... so I assume there is something about your hardware that is causing the DVD iso to fail. Not sure what that might be though.

Installation issues / Re: Problem playing DVD's
« on: August 18, 2007, 07:29:01 pm »
I have ran into a small issue.  When i insert a dvd to play, it fails with a warning that DVD CSS is not installed.  However, the setup wizard indicates that it is installed as well as apt-get, but for some reason it will not let me play back dvd's.

Also, this is a media director as I do not use the Core for Media Playback, but it is a hybrid installation.

Any one else ran into this problem

Thanks,

Rob

We find that sometimes after you have used 'Add Software' from the Orbiters 'lmce' menu (bottom left of the main Orbiter menu screen) to add 'DVD CSS' software from that is might take several minutes for the script to complete its dpkg process. Just wait a few mins and if the 'Installed' icon is showing and DVD's will still not play then try the following from a console session on the MD;

sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh

DVD's should play now ;-)

Hope the above helps

Users / Re: Floorplan

Is there a Wiki on editing the floorplan to add the devices and everything?

Go to your Web Admin and login then select the menu;

Wizard -> Devices ->Floorplan Wizard

Once in the Floorplan Wizard use 'Add another Floorplan to add the floorplan image you want to use and then 'select which Zone you want to add devices to  ie Entertainment Zone, Lighting Zone etc etc. Now you will see a list of the devices available for the Zone you selected to the left of your floorplan image - just drag n drop these onto your floorplan and click 'Save'. Do this for each Zone you have devices in and your done.

...well not quite done! You should do a reload & regen all from one of your Orbiters to make sure the changes to your Floorplans are visible on all MD's.

Installation issues / Re: Fiire Station specs anyone looked inside
« on: August 15, 2007, 01:37:28 pm »
Just out of curiosity, are the via Unichrome drivers part of the Ubuntu install?  Will LinuxMCE automatically install these when it detects a via MD? If not, how is fiire using them?

The Unichrome drivers are not part of the standard Kubuntu install. You need to download a binary from Via or compile them yourself.

Users / Re: How "Follow Me" works?
« on: August 15, 2007, 12:55:42 pm »
Just to clarify, I don't think the core will wake it up until you take some action to do so (i.e. clicking on that room in a orbiter.  There is no way for the core to know that you moved into that room until you do so.

Exactly. And of course if you use the Fiire Gyration Remote to initiate a 'follow-me' you must have a 'Fiire' remote enabled MD in the room you are being 'followed' to otherwise the system has no way to know that you have arrived in the new room.

Hi,

As I know the LinuxMCE offers a nice function - "Follow Me". I understand the main idea of it but I don't understand how it works. If I have two MDs. One is in Living room. It's switched ON and displays some TV channel. The second MD is placed in the Kitchen and it's switched OFF  (sure I have mobile phone with loaded Mobile Orbiter). When I move to the kitchen the media should follow me. But how system identify where I am if the second MD is not running. Bluetooth dongle works only with run PC.

The same scenario can be with FiireChief remote. Because it uses wireless adapter and the work-floor is the same as for Bluetooth.

With follow-me under bluetooth you need to have the MD that you moving media too already booted soiexpect it will be the same for Gyration enable remotes like the Fiire one too.
