Installation issues / Re: Pleeeeassee help with MCE remote :-(

Hey guys,

  The installation went fine, but when I tried to add a remote in the Media Director I'm getting a message as the new Software is installed about 'mce_usb' not able to start correctly. I went back to the KDE-Desktop and did a 'lsmod' and saw lirc_mceusb running ok.. I tried to find the log file for starting that device, it complained about serials and needing rebooting (which I did many times)..

I did some reading on lirc.org and /dev/lirc is not getting created. Dmesg shows one funny message about a 'tainted' kernel but nothing else seems weird:

After working with this a while I re-installed fiesty without any linuxmce packages, followed the instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Install_Lirc_Feisty and still can't get /dev/lirc created. 'lsusb' shows the remote. and /dev/lircd is created. I read that it usually means your using the wrong drivers for your remote but I have the on the right (see http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/MCE_Remote ) and it says 'lirc_mceusb' is the one to use.

After that installation didn't work I tried the instructions from lirc.org and still no /dev/lirc

I'm pretty sure the /etc/lirc/lird.conf file is correct also.

Does anybody have any suggestions? Anything would be MOST appreciated!

Generally if your  IR receiver was not auto-detected by lmce-0704 the best place to fix this is inside lmce and not down at the console or kde level (there are exceptions to this though!).

If your mce receiver was not auto-detected got to Web admin -> Wizard -> Devices -> Media Directors and find the Core/Hybrid MD or other MD you want to add IR to. IR Receivers should be set to 'Default' (try that first... then try mce_usb2 if it doesn't) and then add an MCE remote by clicking on the 'Add Remote' button (select 'Windows XP MC Remote') then click 'Update'. You should see adding software messages start to appear in the top left hand corner of your MD's screens. Wait for the full screen annoucement that this process has finished and then do a reload router.

Your remote should now work... if it is MCE compatible.

Installation issues / Adding the Via Unichrome Pro drivers

The instructions for building the Unichrome Pro Via drivers are available from the url below... its what we used to build them;

You need the v0.83 version of the install guide and the Kernel sources XORG40072_20061226c version.

Once you have built the Unichrome Pro drivers you can use the install script to add them to any MD (you can build them on the Core or any other Kbuntu machine running the correct kernel - it does not have to be a Via machine). We usually add them during the first real boot of a new MD at the point where the AVwizard tries to run but can't start X (the display will continually loop in the console - going blank for a few secs each time). Just ssh into the MD and run the installer from the console choosing the appropriate options for your Via hardare etc. After about 60 secs the AVwizard will spring to lif and display its first screen... this is an indication that the drivers have installed cleanly.

Thats all there is too it.

Are you sure?  I got this from the Video page on the wiki:

Zwave is a problem right now because the Zwave USB adapters shown in the video are not in production anymore. There is a new model from Intermatic, but there are no Linux drivers for the USB-to-RS232 chip on it. I heard that someone has sponsored the driver development so hopefully it will be added shortly.

It wasn't working with Pluto, and it doesn't seem like LMCE support has been added quite yet.  Fiire mentions a driver on their product page here:

but they don't have a link to it.

I don't know if this an LMCE driver or what.  I guess I should just call, but I wanted to see if anyone else knew first.

Well no I am not 100% sure.... I also was partly guided, possibly incorrectly, by the fact that if you go to the Fiire side of the Polywell site and click on zwave in the side bar it takes you to a page about various Intermatic zwave products including the HA-22!

I will do some research on Monday and get a definitive answer and post that here then.

Sorry to say that the HA22 is not currently supported :-(

Hi,

I've installed LinuxMCE as described in this tutorial: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/DVD_Installation

Now I have the GUI but unfortunately no sound. I checked with the admin interface where I can log in with my user and password but no sound configuration there. Then I tried to log in to a console (Alt+F2) but it won't accept the username and password.

Do I have to enable console login anywhere or is there a root password?

If you installed from the lmce-0704 DVD then your console login is;

User = linuxmce
Pass = linuxmce

Good to know that! I was considering EX15000G for my MDs, because of their lower power consumption and fan-less or at least quiet operation.
Can individuals buy Unichrome Pro II drivers from Via or is it licensed only for OEM?

As far as I know they are only available to OEM's. Why this is I am not sure... but that seems to be the situation at present.

The Via EPIA EX does most of the same using around 15W. Except an orbiter rebuild will take 10 times as long. And forget multiple streams from the server. They make good clients (if the video is working) but there are still bugs in the advanced playback. And Via's support is directly related to how much sales they expect to get for doing the work. The Vista support has 10X the engineers that Linux has.

Interesting! From the picture it looks like Fiire MDs are based on EPIA EX.

Is it hard getting the Nokia 770 to run as an orbiter? I asked a month or so back and was told by the Skype support person that it wouldnt work with it?, In process of building new MCE box, dual xeon 2.4s, $100 for the cpus and mobo from computer geeks.

Yes it works as an Orbiter very nicely... but if you want Skype then you need an N800 I'm afraid as the codecs needed for Skype are not currently ported for the OMAP processor that is used in the N770.

It would be nice though if the yanks that put this thing together weren't so Northern hemisphere centric (read US centric), just like their proprietary cousins. Sometimes one wonders if one's part of the world really exists, and isn't just a figment of one's imagination.

I don't know how to edit xconf.org, and this distribution was touted as being really really easy to instal, that's why I chose it.

Instead of moaning about it... encourage some OZ based developers to fix the issues. You can't blame the guys who developed lmce for not knowing what you guys need.

Yep I am... it happens with WinCE Orbiters and to a lesser extent with Symbian as well. Its got very little to do with distance and more to do with the Orbiter's sensitivity to even small increases in latency. Thats why their is a tick box when you create an Orbiter manually in Web Admin for WiFi connected devices. This problem has been there for a long time, back in the early Pluto days.

To log in on a terminal use the username and password of the account that you created during the installation of Kubuntu.  In the case of a DVD installation it is by default linuxmce/linuxmce. 

To log into the web admin you can to use the name of any user created with the stup wizard, the password has been set to the username as well unless you have already changed it. 

When you run the Setup Wizard and create you first user that user becomes the 'Master user' and has the ability to change any setup or setting accessible from the Web Admin site on your Core. If you add additional users when in the Setup Wizard then they are by default not able to change settings in the Admin Web site. If you login to Web Admin as your 'Master user' then you can go to Wizard -> Basic Info -> Users and tick the box "Master User (can modify configuration)?" next to any users you have already created and then click 'Save' to make them 'Master Users' too.

well for me, it takes on average about 2 to 4 seconds for a screen update under OS2006 when changing screens... is this normal?

Also, for some reason, the orbiter will randomly stop responding, and drop out to the log-in screen again. I can press start orbiter again, and it will log back in with no problems, but I find myself doing this quite frequently..again is this normal???

I wanted to use OS2007, but for some reason, the last time I did, it was sooo much slower. :-( I hope this thing can be faster someday, the 770/N800 make a GREAT orbiter, especially for non-media home control.

Our experience is of the speed of screen updates ie when changing from the home menu to say the lighting floorplan is takes on average about 1-2 secs to update the screen. Responses to commands ie 'Play'  or 'Pause' DVD or swtiching channels on TV is that the commands are as fast as they would be on an MD.

Nite_man has both the N770 and the N800 and he feels the N800 is significantly fatster and more stable. My feeling is that some of the situations where you are dumped back into the log-in screen are caused by WiFi issues... the Orbiter code is intolerant of this kind of connectivity drop-out. This is an area where I think the Orbiter code needs some work.

But overall its far better than the WinCE Orbiter... and in our experience more stable and importantly provides the full UI1 Orbiter UI on a very well designed and engineered piece of hardware. Just compare what companies like AMX etc charge for kind of capability!!!

Ok, it's been a while since I lasted posted on this subject. But I've recently got some time to work on it so here it goes:

I know I said I would install OS2006 to see if that helps my stability problem. Before I did that, however, I figured I'd gather some more information about what the orbiter is acutally doing as it has issues.

It can take anywhere between 3 - 20 seconds (never less) for anything to happen when you press a button on the orbiter. I ran top and noticed that maemo-launcher constantly eats up 25-50% of the CPU. I was able to get to the video screen where it listed all the videos (after waiting about 20 seconds). The video screen was very slow at operating anything. When selecting a video it completely locks up. I was running top while it was doing this and I noticed that the media player was running. Of course, that's as far as I can get as it's becomes unresponsive at that point.

That's when it's in it's "working" state. It often crashes completely and will even take xterm with it at times. One time I noticed after it completely crashed I lost net connection (ssh died and couldn't connect) even though the WLAN monitor said I was connected. Once I disconnected and reconnected I was able to ssh back into it.

I'm going to try OS2006 in a bit, but I'm going to take a break from this one for a little while.

I got nite_man's N770 Orbiter running on our N770 under OS2006 (latest release) a day or so back. I had a few problems with getting the correct repos added but nite_man helped with that!

It works really nicely and my experience is that under OS2006 it s pretty stable. It has failed a few times but often this was when several reload routers were done in quick succession and also sometimes I  think the WiFi connection can the problem.

Overall its great and everyone that has seen it has loved it.

Does the intermatic USB adapter work with LMCE?  I was under the impression that it did not.

The intermatic USB SUC is not supported currently by lmce's Zwave driver I'm afraid.
