Right... you need the Unichrome Pro II drivers to get UI2 support and they have to be licensed from Via by systems integrators.

just a couple of questions to make myself a clear picture.

I've a VIA based MD with CLE266, and according to its xorg.conf it is already using via driver shipped with Kubuntu/LMCE.

Are you saying that those drivers are NOT Unichrome Pro?

I've given a look at the pdf with the compiling procedure and it's a bit scaring to me. This is because I've tried last week to compile an external module but I messed up all my kernel modules and I had to get them out from a backup.
It looks like the .config file shipped with linux sources / headers differs from what have been used to compile
my actual system modules, so after reboot no module was loaded anymore.

So before going again through the same story I prefer to make 100% sure that this is the only option I have.

Well we had a lot of problems with the Via drivers in Kubuntu 7.04 - and from memory I think they are Openchrome. So we built our own Unichrome Pro drivers using the sources and the pdf from Via Arena.

If you get good performance from the drivers your using then stick with them.

My bad.  You're right.  So, if I download the Kubuntu UI on top of Ubuntu, will that work?  Or do I have to download Kubuntu proper?

You need to download the Kubuntu 7.04 CD from;

Then download the lmxce-0704 CD's and follow the instructions on the Wiki;

Hi all...
Just performed a new install from the DVD onto a spare machine.
However, after the install finishes, i get the KUBUNTU splash screen for about 3 minutes ( does nothing and progress bar does not move ).
After this, i get a black screen with this message :

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs)


I have now tried this on 2 different machines with same results.

Any ideas ?

Thanks for your help Andrew.

Could you elaborate on the WOL issue ?  My NAS can be woken up from an OFF state. Quite a neat feature actually.  Right now, i have MP wake the NAS when needed.  Once the NAS has booted, i can then access my network shares.

I have to power down the NAS because windows home server cannot be placed into standby or hibernate.
Also, for reasons i don't want to get into, i need to stick with WHS .

btw..   i know nothing about linux at all...    this is all new to me.

Well lmce uses WOL to wake up MD's so inherently the capability is already there. However I am not sure that a NAS can be controlled this way as i think lmce assumes that a NAS will be on all the time. I will check this though with one of the guys at work on Monday and let you know.

I'm not a MythTV user so this is a little outside my experience... but if the card is working (dmesg output indicates all is ok) and kaffeine can display a video stream from it then the problem has to be in Myth's setup.

Hi all...
First time poster here.
I am currently a Media Portal user who is in need of a more stable solution.

I am thinking of trying LMCE, but i need these answered first :

1 - I have a Windows Home Server PC running as a NAS which only needs to be on about 2 hrs per day. Within MP  ( media portal ) i can WOL this NAS. Can this be done from within LMCE ?

2 - How are people cataloging their DVD TV Series Box Sets ?  I have 6 different DVD series box sets all ripped to my NAS in Divx format which i would like to catalog in this way :  Series -->  Season --> Episode.  Is this doable ? Or something similar...

3 - If i have a PC as a Media Director in the lounge room setup to network boot, does it still require a hard drive ?

Taking your questions in order;

1. Yes lmce supports WOL... but not as far as I know for NAS's (someone correct me if I am wrong). However I am sure this could be added.

2. You could certainly store your DVD in the directory structure you suggest and by using the Orbiters Media Browser filter by file you could browse using this structure as well. In database mode the Orbiters Media Browser presents content according to attribute searched on and not the physical location of the content ie show me DVD's by name & Genre etc.

3. All our Media Directors boot up from the Core/Hybrid over the network - they have processor, 512mb RAM and optionally an optical drive for playing physical discs locally. You do not need an HD in your MD's (but you can use one if you do as additional network storage).

I simply cannot get my DTV1000T card set up properly within MythTV, NOTHING I try works. Can someone please provide a step-by-step guide for what I need to do to get this card working?

I also have a DVICO FusionHDTV-DVBT card which I could put in instead if you think this card would work better.

I think the modules you need to make sure are loaded are;

cx88-dvb
dvb-core
cx88-alsa

Do an lsmod to see if there loaded

dvb-core should be loaded already.

Test these as follows;

sudo modprobe cx88-dvb
sudo modprobe cx88-alsa

If you get no errors then add them to /etc/modules and reboot.

Then do to see if your card is now starting up ok.

sudo dmesg | grep DVB

and you see messages about the card being detected and setup etc. It appears that no firmware is needed for this card so that should do it.

If you installed from the lmce-0704 DVD then your console login is;

User = linuxmce
Pass = linuxmce

What about the root account?  linuxmce is a user account and can't modify system settings and root owned files. 

Once logged in you can put 'sudo' in front of any console command to allow you temporary 'root' access ie;

sudo joe /etc/fstab

Quite frequently I will try to play a video or watch a tv broadcast, only to find that the sound is fine, but the video is totally messed up. It's as if there's some sort of codec missing. A reboot will normally fix this, but it happens so frequently that it's not really an option to just keep rebooting.

Once it happens it affects Xine, Linux MCE, and MythTV.

Anyone got an idea what could be causing this?

The tuning problem you're having sounds exactly the same one that I had when I first installed the Nova T 500. I couldn't get it to tune at all, dispite showing signal strength well into 80%. Once I followed that wiki page however everything worked as expected.
I am experiencing a MythTV problem however, in that I can open it, and it'll work fine, but I then can't leave MythTV and view a video. They all show up as a garbled mess regardless of the prog I use to view; audio however is fine. Linux mce, Xine, even MythTV stops working from that point.

I think the problem that Fibres has is that he is not using the current builds of the modules needed for the T500 when using the firmware I posted - that firmware works with the standard required T500 module support built into Kubuntu 7.04 'out of the box'. However as with any firmware update you do need to power-off and boot up to force the firmware to do a 'cold start' and load properly.

As to your problem I'm afraid I can't offer any insight into that.

Come on man, can we let this wiki thing rest.  You were shit on and the rant the Trout put on the wiki page was classless and stupid, we can all see that, but there are a few of us actually trying to improve the wiki so that many of these repeat questions can be easily found and people can trouble shoot their  problems.  Hopefully this will help you work on several of the things on your to do list and let you stop answering the same questions over and over again. 

No body is going to even look at the wiki for info if one of the most common posters on this forum keeps degrading it. 

It is obvious to me that you are serious about helping others get a working system, so your help with updating the pages would be greatly appreciated.   I am not a wiki admin, nor will I be, but I do want this to be a place of collaboration and not confrontation.  Please help us help others.

I'm sorry but the problem here is that I often link to these pages directly, which is completely useless if everybody keeps moving things around whenever they feel like it.  All this senseless reorganising over and over again is getting on my nerves.  The sad thing is that I can hardly even find the pages I added and categorized myself anymore these days.

And let's be honest, is "Troubleshooting_AVWizard" really that much better or clearer then "AVWizard"?  It is a general page about the AVWizard, not about troubleshooting isn't it?

Personally I think you're the sanest one of the bunch (which includes me) so if anyone should be the admin I think it's you.  I just wish you guys had focused more on expanding the existing structure instead of removing and reorganising over and over just for the sake of it. 

So I'm just going to leave the wiki alone and hope that I can still find the (far from perfect) instructions (which I added myself) the next time I want to redo the setup in my own home.

Zaerc - I totally agree. The constant changes are incredibly frustrating and to be honest mostly add zero value. Unless an addition to the Wiki is by someone who is 'defacing' the site or is plain incorrect then it should be left alone in my opinion. Lets get back to adding information and value to the Wiki as a resource - it doesn't need 'editors' it needs more people like you Zaerc putting their time, effort and knowledge into it.

I have the XP remote along with the Hauppauge Version which both work out of the box.  I do not have a Vista version, so I can not directly commit on the status of the Vista version, but according to the MythTV wiki it needs the mceusb module and not mceusb2 module, so I would be inclined to say it is not supported.  I know there is no device template, and this is generally needed for LinuxMCE to see and know how to use the device.  This would likely be a pretty easy task to create a template, but it looks like the lastest CVS version of LIRC is needed.
Please let us know if you get this remote working.

Thanks for those links, Rob. In fact I saw those forum posts and mythtv wiki. There is little reference about vista remote among the users. For now, I don't want to configure LMCE to use mceusb instead of mceusb2 and all that! I am still far away from creating templates on my own. I have to learn the LMCE architecture and that is going to take some time (pretty busy finishing the basement). Looks like it is safer for me to go with Windows XP remote and later upgrade to Fiire chief once prices fall to reasonable levels. $150 seems to be too high.

Changing the IR receiver setting for an MD or a Core/Hybrid is very easy just got to Web Admin -> Wizard -> Devices ->Media Directors and then scroll to the MD you want to change the IR receiver setting on and select it from the 'IR Receivers' pop up - choose mce_usb. Next choose your remote from the 'Add Remote' button. The Vista MCE remote is not currently listed... but its possible that it will work with one of the standard MCE remote settings. Once you have selected the receiver and the remote you need then scroll to the bottom of the page and click 'Update'

The problem is that the Windows Orbiter is just that... it can act as a 'remote' for a media director and control other devices about the network. But as far as I know it cant play content locally.

I need a z-wave alternative. Especially since I live in th UK; z-wave don't do our plugs!

I have had a few 'experiences' setting up LMCE.

First off, dont buy a HTPC case with built in imon vfd and remote - (I have the thermaltake bach, but silverstone also do this) it's a pain!
The remote would be handy for LMCE as it has a mouse 'pad' but this doesn't work in linux. There is however a patch to make the pad generate left, right, up, down movements, so I'm gonna give it a go and post a howto here if it works.
The vfd screen is also difficult to set up with LMCE. Again I'm still working on this so I'll post back.
My advice - save the £40 ($80) extra and buy a gyro mouse, or even a windows mce remote.

Second, if you have a wireless network card that requires ndiswrapper (like mine - belkin pre-N) don't use the LMCE dvd installer, you have to install kubuntu then ndiswrapper then the LMCE cd's (in my experience anyway). The dvd install has a different libc6 to the one ndiswrapper depends on, and I couldn't change it!

Third, don't install nvidia drivers from their website or via envy - LMCE only likes its own propietary driver. But do go for an nVidia card over ATI

Fourth, don't buy a samsung HDD! I did as they're cheap, but they are VERY sus and slow!!

There's probably more, so I'll keep thinking :-)

imon vfd and remotes certainly works under linux... it does not work 'out of the box' under lmce however.

We have installed the nVidia drivers from the nVidia website... just followed the instructions there and on the Wiki. Worked for us.
