Installation issues / Re: AVWizard not displaying correctly
« on: October 27, 2007, 07:05:01 pm »
I ran into blank screen issues with my GeForce 6200 card when it reached the AVWizard. This was with a monitor connected to the VGA port. Pressing the numer keys did not help, so I dropped into console (Ctrl + Alt + F1) and had a look at the xorg.conf file in /etc/X11

The problem was caused by the entry under Section "Device",
Code: [Select]
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT"This seemed to push the video signal out to somewhere other than the VGA? However this only happened when trying to use the nvidia driver. When the AVWizard is run it inserts this Option automatically so
I changed the driver setting from
Code: [Select]
Driver "nvidia" to
Code: [Select]
Driver "nv" and rebooted. Now I could see the AVWizard.

I then stepped through the wizard and set the user interface to UI2. This of course failed once the Orbitors were generated but by this time my xorg.conf file was generated. I dropped back into the console, edited the xorg.conf file and set the
Code: [Select]
Driver "nv" back to
Code: [Select]
Driver "nvidia" and commented out the
Code: [Select]
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT"
Rebooted and all was well.

After temp switching to 'nv' as suggested above I found that I had to set "ConnectedMonitor" as below;

Code: [Select]
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT-1"
Then all was well :-)

I would probably recommend upgrading the RAM to 2GBs. My core system has 1.5GB of RAM and when i connect one Media Director, it eats that up pretty quickly.

Hmmm... thats strange. We mostly configure Core's with 1Gb RAM... but we have a few with 512MB too and we dont see that. Can you document that a little?

Installation issues / Re: No bootable device found?!
« on: October 27, 2007, 12:03:32 pm »
The bios is set up correctly, it is a SATA drive.

That might be the problem... we've had problems when we've tried to use SATA drives as the boot drive when installing from the DVD. Might be worth testing an IDE drive as the boot drive and using your other drives just for data.

All working ok now, once I removed the MD and let LMCE set it all up automatically. Cheers all :D

We're having no problems with 6200LE & 7300LE here under UI2

What version of the nvidia drivers are you using?
I have an Asus EN6200LE which is reported to work with UI2 + alpha blending by several people here in the forum. When I turn on alpha blending my CPU usage goes up to around 70% without doing anything and up to 100% when I try to use menus. The menus have a high latency and flickr screensaver is not moving smoothly... Because of that I can only use UI2 medium at the moment. Any ideas?

Cheers,
/Chriss

We're using the version that lmce-0704 installs from deb cache.

We're using the non-open nVidia drivers

Well, of course I'm also using the proprietary driver (nvidia not nv). But which version are you using?

The version shipped with LinuxMCE-0704 - nvidia-glx = 1.0.9631+2.6.20.5-15.20

and under LinuxMCE-0710 - nvidia-glx = 1:1.0.9639+2.6.22.4-14.9+lmce3

Is there a time table on the next version? I figure it is coming soon.  I am going to do a reinstall and figure I will hold off until the next release.

Regards,
Blair

I would suggest doing an install... I understand that you will be able to upgrade to the next release.

So, this may be a noob question, but I gotta ask anyways. Here's my scenario:

My Windows MCE drive just crashed, so I just bought Seagate 160GB HD, and I wanted to install linux mce and forget all about windows. I ripped out the old drive, plugged in the new one, put the DVD in and picked "Install Linux MCE". I picked the appropriate HD to install (since there is only one), and it went on its way and installed successfully. It told me to eject the CD and press enter to restart.

So when the comp restarts I get a message that says "No Boot Device Found. Please enter boot device and press any key to continue." If i put the linux MCE DVD back in, I can restart the comp and select the "Boot from hard disk" option and linux mce will come up. But I can't start it straight from the drive. So my question is, what am I doing wrong? I'd really appreciate some help here.

Thanks in advance!

Might be the jumpers... did you set your drives jumpers so that it is a 'Master' ? Also check your bios settings to make sure that it has been auto-detected etc.

hello all!

I got my MCE installation to work more or less pretty good!

Now I have taken the second HDD out of my XP machine and put it in my MCE machine.

KDE Desktop:

The 300gb HDD is recognized in the menu system settings (advanced) > Disk & File Systems (Admin mode)

There are several different mounting options but i have yet to find a configuration to get it mounted.

Since I have my data backed up on an external HDD - i am prepared to format the second HDD and start all over again.....if some kind soul would be willing to point this n00b in the right direction.

Then i can copy the data from from my external HDD back up!

thanks to all.

Any advice to mount the 2nd internal HDD as above?

Thanks!

Hi...

Presumably since your 300GB drive came from a Windows machine it is currently formatted NTFS... which means it will be read only (but mountable). Alternatively you could format it ext3, which is linux compatible, and then partition it as a single 300GB partition. Then lmce should detect it and ask you if you would like to have it manage the drive for you... say yes and your away.

I thought the intention of naming Linumce 1.1 to Linuxmce 0704 was to sync it with ubuntu family release. Is that the intention and its just behind. I was hoping to rebuild my test 7.04 Box and bring it up to  7.10. Based on the other posts mentioned is it safe to say we wont see another release until 0804.   :-[  If so I will rebuild everything under 7.04

Thanks

Tim

I understand that it will be possible to update lmce-0704 to lmce-0710. There will always be a little lag between a Kubuntu release and a lmce release.

Users / Re: Playback of internet material/streams
« on: October 26, 2007, 02:54:51 pm »
Something just got to me, I use internet to watch various sports, Baseball from mlb.tv, tennis from atptennis.com, and football from fxtv.no, since I can watch all these in my Firefox browser, I assume that it will work well in LinuxMCE aswell, correct?

But I also use livesport247.com to watch english football, these are streams that I play back in Winamp, I think that they are encoded in h.264, and the file I get from the streamprovider is a m3u-file

Will the internet content work just as good in LMCE as in Windows?

Yes... with one caveate which is currently you will have to use the KDE desktop to launch a KDE app to view these streams. I use vlc (which is also available under windows) to view m3u streamed content.

Users / Re: Min spec for MD?
« on: October 25, 2007, 11:53:23 am »
Hi Guys,

I was just wondering whether there was a minimum spec for the Media Directors. I have seen some hype regarding these nifty devices:

http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2005/10/jackpc_thin_cli.html?entry_id=1267129

They are a thin client that goes into a wall like a socket. It has the DVI out and a USB port, perfect for them dongles. Is all the processing done on the DCERouter box? Or is some done on the MD?

Underpowered processor...unspecified video chip... windows CE based... even if you could pxe boot it. Therefore I somehow doubt that this hardware would work at all currently.

Do you have it working with alpha blending, and no tearing in video?  I have an nvidia, and UI2 works great with alpha blending, but there is tearing in the video.  If I switch to UI2 with no alpha blending, the tearing goes away.

I have to say we still see some tearing with alpha blending on... the nVidia drivers are still as good as they could be :-(

Hi I'm getting really confused about what graphic card to buy?
I'm not looking for anything expensive and currently thinking about these cards:

Club 3D GeForce 7200GS:
http://www.macwarehouse.co.uk/catalogue/item/V0004774

ASUS EN7300LE/HTD:
http://www.pyramid.com/Product.aspx?StockCode=292155

It just seems like every card I search for in the forum have some kind of problems or not able to run UI2 with alpha or UI3.
And the high end cards 8XXX seem to be badly supported in Linux...
So It leaves me:
1. Don't buy Ati.
2. Don't buy to "high end" card.
3. Don't buy card with to little ram.

So my question is, what is left?   :)

Would it be possible to have some "working out of the box" hardware list or thread?

Well it does not help that I'm a new Linux user :) so messing around with config files and stuff to get the hardware working still makes my brain hurt a little bit  ;D

This is my current hardware:

Case:           Antec VERIS Fusion 430 -EC
Motherboard: ASRock 4Core1333-FullHD
Cpu:             Core 2 Duo E4400 2 GHz
Ram:            Kingston ValueRAM PC2-5300CL5 / 667 MHz
Video:          Integrated ATI X1250 (and not installed FX5200)

We're having no problems with 6200LE & 7300LE here under UI2

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your reply. I will try booting the MD tonight and let LMCE autoconfigure it. What should be setup in the root server IP address? I'm guessing that is the LMCE?

Thanks Paul

As Hagen has already said this should all be automatic. If you have two network interfaces in your core then you need to make sure that the MD is connected to the LAN side interface and not the WAN side interface (ie the one facing your broadband connecttion). Hook the MD up and power it up... it will then 'announce' itself to the DCErouter and will run 'Setup_Diskless.sh' script. The MD will then sit there for 10 mins or so apparently not doing anything... some kind of progress indicator here would be reassuring. But once you have seen the process once you will understand whats happening... just be patient. Eventually the MD will reboot and this time will do its first true pxe boot and will then install lmce from the Core's cache. This also takes another 10-15 mins (but only this first time... subsequent reboots are much faster)

Eventually you will see the AVwizard and then the Setup Wizard etc etc... and then you are all set :-)

Andrew
