I appreciate the suggestions.  We have a EE in the office, so I asked him and he said it was probably the ballast for the LCD.

Haven't done anything to eliminate the noise yet, but will post when I find a solution or even what I've tried.

Thanks Seth-

I can confirm that this works.  I setup the Core using the above instructions- pen drive, esc, safe mode, copy, restart method and now I have the core with 2 nics- 1 onboard and one pci.  This gives room to put a pci tuner in the core.

I will update the wiki

Seth-

Have you tried using this as your Core?  I tried:  http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=5995.0  before, and haven't since.  But want to can my system and get the gigabit card working.  Process would be a bit different than configuring a MD, but probably not that different.  Maybe I'll try with a different harddrive and keep the working system accessible.

For anyone else thinking about this board- I have had excellent experience.  I've been running this as a core straight (no reboots that I can remember) since 8/18/08:  http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Asus_M3A78-EM

Krys,

I just shot you a PM.  I don't think I'll buy from PC Universe again- they show no record of my order on their website, their customer service response time is poor at best and the shipping times are currently at 7 working days (and counting).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my 366's take a horizontal 44pin ide flash drive.  I'm guessing that almost any that meet that description will work.

Thom-

Good suggestion, unfortunately it was not the speakers.  I was able to turn down all of the volume and then took the unit apart and physically disconnected the speakers.

Are there any EEs?  I think it may be capacitor squeal.  Right now, if I squeeze the unit in various places, the squeal gets softer and after a period of time goes away.  I am curious how it acts if I just leave it on for a couple hours- but don't want to do this if I'm not home- just incase :)

Does anyone know how to turn off the volume on the 366's short of unplugging the speakers?

I turned on a 366 for the first time and it sounds like the speakers have been turned up to max.  You get that audible buzz that I would like to turn off if possible.

Thanks

I’m sure all these questions have been asked before and I apologize for repeating them, but I suck at finding things.

Please start here:  http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/FAQ

Most here are very friendly and willing to help, but as you said, many of the questions you asked have been asked/answered before.

A quick recap:
wireless- no bad idea
access/change- yes
webcam- check on the hardware section on the wiki- http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Hardware
tuners- number of tuners = number of decoders = number of separate tvs to watch shows on (generally)- if the streams need to be decoded that could be a different issue
game console- not sure about this
printer/file server- yes

I tried a CF card initially (because I had a 4gb one sitting around), but I didn't want to figure out how to get Thom's image installed on a CF and it wasn't initially intuitive.  To try, I only pulled out the internal ide card and installed the CF on the top of the unit, then ran the image installer from a USB.  Install (if I remember correctly) got to 2% or so and kicked out an "out of space" error.

I would guess that they're is someway to mount the image on a separate machine and install the files on the CF- I'm pretty sure the 366 doesn't care where it boots from- internal vs CF.

If someone knows how to do this, I'd be willing to try- probably have time even tonight.  My CF is nothing fantastic- 4gb at 120x, but should get the job done.

I highly recommend plugging in a usb keyboard and pressing f1 when the 366 first turns on.  This will load the bios configuration screen.

Go to Option C- "Motherboard Device Configuration" and the Option A- "IDE Configuration" and under "Boot Order Configuration" set all 3 to "NONE".  And, on the same screen, set the "Flash Interface" under "Flash Configuration" to "Disabled".

Then enable the "Summary Screen Configuration" under the Option H- "Miscellaneous Configuration" from the home screen.

Finally, Option X- "Save Values and Exit".

Now, restart the device- it will stall on the summary screen.  On the 4th line of the summary screen it should start with "Floppy A" followed by "Drive 80:"

Now, I think this where this http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=6775.0 especially Thom's post here:  "512 binary megabytes, (524,288,000 bytes)" makes the difference.  The one that I can get Thom's image to flash onto says "Drive 80: 524", my other one in the same place says "Drive 80: 512".  On this second 366, the image gets to 97% then says that it ran out of room.

So, if you're having similar trouble- I think the 512 vs 524 makes all the difference.  I wanted a quick solution to the problem, so I bought a 1gb drive from PC Universe for about $23 shipped.

Installation issues / Re: Need HELP badly!!!

I bought a M3A78-EM from newegg:   http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131324   and it has worked flawlessly once I installed the 32b version of 710-  wiki file here:  http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/ASUS_M3A78-EM

I have had no reboots/restarts/lockups/whatever.

Have you considered it could be something else?  Bad memory/cpu?  If all you're doing is changing the motherboard but keeping the rest the same, maybe the motherboard is not the issue.

Who else here is impressed that you can throw out something an in hours or even minutes sometimes, the answer is displayed in black and white.

Some may bitch that some of the responses are hostile.  It has been my experience that the forums contain a wealth of information and that when hostile responses have been posted it was because the answers had been posted countless times and a simple search for the topic would have yielded the answers.

I've got friends (non-tech accountants and what not) that can't wait to get this installed in their homes based on a few experiences with it. One just told his contractor that he wanted 'internet wire' run though the house.

This is certainly the wrong post to post this in and I don't mean to start a fire...

I'm not sure on how flash memory works.  It seems that sometimes when you buy a 512mb stick you get either more or less than the specified.  One 512 stick I have actually holds 524mb.  I'm not sure how close to 512mb Thom's image requires.  If a full 512, then maybe 50% of the time a 366 with "512mb" will work and 50% of the time "512mb" will not be enough- based purely on a straight 50/50 probability.

Someone with technical knowledge may be able to chime in on this...

Thom is the person of authority to answer the question and what will happen in the future, but for now it requires a full flash of the drive.  I have recently had to buy a flash memory card to fit one of the 366's to get Thom's image flashed on it and I can tell you how easy it is to get these apart.

Something like 6 screws on the outside and 5 inside the case and you have access to the flash ide memory card- 44 pins.  I bought mine from PC Universe for about $23 shipped to central US location.  Still waiting for the drive to show up, but it's easy to swap them out- probably, however, not when cooking.

I think tkmedia is selling a usb drive that has the original image on it so you can restore an original image later.  Thom's process takes ~20 minutes or so, I would guess the win OS would be about the same.

Feature requests & roadmap / Re: Integrated Recipes Module
« on: December 11, 2008, 04:15:56 am »
OK, well I'm still looking for an interpreter to write/edit code, but for now I've just been trying to read the code that someone else has already written.

How much code has to integrated into LMCE vs just being a standalone program that runs inside LMCE- is there a difference?  What I don't want is another program that is stapled onto LMCE like mythtv that has a different UI from the rest of the software.  Even though it works- and works well, I would rather integrate something into LMCE that carries the same UI look and feel.

That said, has anyone looked into Gourmet Recipe Manager?  http://grecipe-manager.sourceforge.net/  It seems to have all of the previously requested features already including a shopping cart, recipe's that you can download from a number of websites as well as add your own/rate the ones you have.  Plus, it has a fairly easy to use search feature.   And, it's written in Python.

More recipes:
http://mc6help.tripod.com/RecipeLibrary/RecipeLibrary.htm

The whole tar'd files are 1.8 mB while the untar'd are 8.4 mB  (no recipe's are initially included).

Is there a reason that I couldn't spend my time trying to develop an interface for LMCE that calls functions from Gourmet and not worry about editing the code?
I'm not sure how to check what dependencies are required for the program vs which ones are included by default- something I will look at later.

Anyone have any questions/concerns/problems/whatever?
