Installation issues / Re: New Install Errors
« on: May 17, 2007, 09:10:57 pm »
Which version are you trying to install? 1.0 or 1.1...

1.0 runs on ubuntu 6.10
1.1 runs on Kubuntu 7.04

I highly recommend 1.1, much slicker interface,

I've only come across a couple hitches on the 1.1 install, posted quite a few times here.. along with the fixes...

well, so far, so good...

Kubuntu did an update just before the release, and it broke the cache disc..
not too hard to fix though, just go through /etc/log/mce-installer*.log files and find all the dependencies it couldn't fix,
copy /etc/apt/sources.list.dbackup to /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install (all the missed dependencies)

then for safety, I did a
sudo apt-get update

Once this is done, restart the installer...

I accidentally stopped my install (my bad) I hit CTRL-C to try to copy something from the terminal output, and duh!
anywho, I played with the broke install for a bit, it actually worked quite well, considering it was not fully installed...
I really like the new Startup app... this alone will help alleviate a whole bunch of problems... you can look at the logs, start the backend seperately from the front end, test sql connection, all from a nice gui...  WAY TO GO!!

so now I've restarted my install.. one problem I have is that is wants to install flash player from macromedia... and downloading from that server is s-l-o-w, (this is where I made my boo boo)
anywho, she's downloading now, and hopefully it'll be finished here in a bit..

First impressions of 1.1:  500% better than 1.0, and I rate it (so far) at 8/10
oh, btw, the MD loads in another window in KDE's desktop, slick...

Good work and kudos to the dev team!

I'll update once I know more...

That's because your running Ubuntu 6.10, not KUBUNTU 7.04 - best to reinstall OS

Download the KUBUNTU FIESTY DVD

if you stick the disc in the drive, open (or mount) the drive, (you;ll get a CDROM icon on your screen)
right click the mce-installer_2.0.1-1_i386.deb file and select Kubuntu Package Menu, and Install Package.

That will put an icon on your screen.  Click that icon to start the installation.

I second that... if they don't need all the gizmos, don't install them.

in my situation, I've got a pretty illiterate family, and I've told them all to buy macbooks.  I bought one for my wife, and she's loving it.

I haven't had a complaint yet, or even better, a "How do I do this"...

« on: May 17, 2007, 01:52:22 am »
read the article on the main page... it does solve some pretty nasty issues...
It's also based on Kubuntu, not Ubuntu, and it's now based on the latest version, Fiesty.

Those reasons alone, afaiac, are worth the effort..

926
It's all in how you look at it...
linuxmce will do quite a bit more than windows mce, like home automation, VOIP, and especially dvb-s...
Yes, you can run it all on 1 computer, called a hybrid installation.

(the media director runs also on the server, as does the on-screen orbiter)

Thin client -  no, not quite, if your thin client is PXE capable and PC based, then maybe yes...

Most thin clients have a base OS built into them, and they RDP or VNC (or whatever) into a server

If you want to control your security cameras, lights, home automation, irrigation system, AND whatever else, look at linux, Windoze won't do all that.

oh well, getting better throughput now... SR 1.5

Welcome Karl!

System requirements are hard to determine.. it depends on what you're doing,.

Linuxmce is a mesh of a bunch of programs, Pluto (www.plutohome.com), Asterisk, MythTV etc.

First, you need to determine what you want it to do:
Obviously, you need some form of tuner or capture card if you want to record TV..
you can have multiple cards as well, but then, the requirements go up.

in a nutshell, linuxmce requires a Backend computer.  This computer may or may not have a front end on it.
(a dedicated backend sits in the closet and grinds away)

Front ends are PC's (or other hardware) that interface to the back end.
They are called Media Directors, and you can have as many of those as you need.

Then there are the Orbiters, (fancy name for remote control).  Normally, all Media directors have orbiters built into them.. but you can also have a Pocket PC as an orbiter.. etc.

Video cards are the tricky part... Newer Nvidia seems to work best..

so, to start out with, get your biggest machine, and set that up as the back end server....
then go to a smaller machine and set it up as a media director... etc...
BTW, the media directors (if properly configured) can PXE boot off the server, so you can have diskless MD's

HTH

Installation issues / Re: LinuxMCE 1.1 BETA?
« on: May 16, 2007, 10:09:18 pm »
You should be able to download KDE from the ubuntu mirrors..
haven't done it personally, but I have installed gnome onto a server.. pretty straight forward

Search ubuntu's site for installing KDE on Ubuntu...
it's probably something like sudo apt-get install KDE
there may be a how-to there too... it's probably faster, but not as quite as easy...

Before you do that, it looks like the new installer has a livecd so you may not need to.

The torrent:  click the link, and open it with (whatever your torrent proggy is)
ubuntu installs one by default, can't remember which one...
I think it's BitTornado...
anywho, Torrents are Distributed files... the actual file is broken up into chunks.. and the chunks can be downloaded virtually on their own... This way, you can have multiple chunks downloading at the same time..
and vice versa, when you start downloading, the data you download is available for whomever needs it..
Most torrent clients try to download the hardest to find chunks first, to make them available to the swarm.

The swarm is simply a group of computers that are all trying to download the same file.

hope that helps.
