Users / Re: are there some suggestions for MD/Orbiter for a newbie
« on: May 03, 2007, 06:25:47 am »
From an Orbiter I can select music stored in the system and send it to either a Media Director or a Squeezebox or Roku. Or all of them at once. At one point I had the Slimserver also pointing at the same media directory but an upgrade messed that up and I have not got back to it. I'm using Pluto right now and will go back to LMCE but with my current setup as complex as it is I will wait for the next release of LMCE. Too many devices to sort out.

Getting the Roku working wasn't as simple as it should be. You may need to manually add it so LMCE can access it. I forgot the process so I'm not a lot of help for this.

I have a Roku M1000 talking to Pluto. You need to tell the Roku to talk to Slimserver and then it works. LMCE has a version of Slimserver in it. The Squeezebox integration is a little better it seems but they both work fine. For a self contained audio solution the Roku Soundbridge Radio is a great package (perfect for a Kitchen radio).

In the US they aren't so expensive. The current Squeezebox can be had for $250 on eBay and the Rokus are closer to $50 in some cases. For that price most PC's are pretty limited and don't include a display. And suck power.

For audio only use a Squeezebox or Roku, simpler and cheaper and still controlled by LMCE. For the bedroom I have had success with an iPaq 5550 (WiFi WinCE handheld) as a control device, except its not working right now. Some problem with connecting?? I'm waiting for v1.1 and then I will troubleshoot it. But to control lights it was great when it was working.

For the main system use a desktop with lots of power and nVidia graphics. Not worth the effort to sort out a different solution when that works.

Installation issues / Re: Debian 4.0 base - compatible?
« on: April 18, 2007, 12:20:29 am »
If you want to try Debian then you could look at the Plutohome.com version. It installs Debian and then installs on top of it. No desktop but more stable with supported hardware it seems than LMCE. Same underlying code etc.

Its a completely dumb install. I didn't go out of my way to set up anything with Myth. I discovered playing with Pluto that I stood a greater chance of balling things up when I did. I did go throug the back end and front end setup and confirm all of the settings.

Onboard nVidia 6150 in Asus M2NPV-VM motherboard. I have used an nVidia 7300? but it didn't offer any advantages. The MD has 512 MB of ram w/ video set to 256MB.

With a system like LMCE don't go too far too fast or troubleshooting will drive you crazy. You have movie playback. If you press F7 can you control it from the keyboard or mouse? (F7 brings up the Orbiter control). Do you have a laptop on the system running the Windows orbiter? Can you control the MD from it?

Once you have the the hybrid running you can go through and get the other pieces running. Most problems seem to be traceable to drivers- hardware incompatibilities with Linux. I think the photo player is "unfinished". Does the Flickr screen saver work?

I use the PXE boot exclusively for MD's. You can get NIC's that have NIC firmware from eBay. They don't cost much.

At this stage I run out of useful experience.

I have Myth running at a 50% confidence. I'm using the SiliconDust tuner which runs stand alone so its more isolated from the rest of the system. I still find live TV chancy at best. I usually watch recorded programs which work OK. When Live TV crashes 50% of the time a router reload will recover it. Otherwise a reboot is necessary. I have found that a router reload is necessary after a reboot to get Myth started. Sometimes I need to go through the Myth backend to wake it up. I wish I knew what was really working in this ritual but I know little about Myth.

You should be able to access Mythweb in the core from a browser in another computer on the network- 192.168.80.1/mythweb  . The backend status will give some idea if the backend is running. You can schedule recordings from Mythweb as well.

Corwin offered some very good suggestions but I have a slightly different take. I'm running a complete Pluto system w/ one MD soon to be more and I think the issues of power in the boxes can't be minimized. I have one over the top miniITX box with an nVidia 6150 MB and a Sempron 2600 that doesn't work well for Pluto, a screwup in the board implementation causes it to not handle video well. So $300 worth of MB useless for this. Get the recommended hardware.

I'm using a D-Link residential gateway (router) that has pretty good configuration options doesn't use a lot of power and is very reliable and stable. I have one PC with a fixed IP attached to the network that always works, even when the Pluto system is spread across the workbench.

Security will be an issue once you let VOIP into the system, simply because VOIP needs access to the outside and doesn't coexist well with NAT. I like some of his ideas but setup and troubleshooting nonstandard setup is more than I can deal with. I have been requesting a better setup interface for the firewall, the DHCP server etc. Maybe soon.

A system like this won't have the lightweight power consumption of a DVD player for a long time. I would like a solar powered version as well but I'm not saving my money for it yet.

Users / Re: Resolution issues
« on: April 07, 2007, 08:24:06 am »
These are more limitations of working with the nVidia driver into a simple CE type setup. Diving into modelines etc. can probably help. Some with risk. I tried playing with the nVidia control panel and crashed everything. I gave up and packed it in.

Recommended practice is to select the nearest resolution and then use the scaling feature in the AV Wizard to adjust for the best fit to the display. This will give the best approximation of native resolution. It seems that there are challenges to a true native resolution since most displays don't actually support a direct mode. You end up with scaler after scaler combined with matching artifacts, but it can't be helped today.

Users / Re: Comparison - LinuxMCE - Plutohome - Monster Einstein
« on: April 07, 2007, 08:13:06 am »
The feature set is essentially the same for Pluto and LinuxMCE. The different platforms have highlighted some -shall we say- cross-platform bugs. But the functions are the same. Monster's Einstein system is not shipping so its not possible to comment in detail, but Einstein seems to have the same feature set. It may have some different components being a commercial product, including some software that isn't open source. They have promised shipping later this year but you never know until it has shipped.

I don't know of any other commercial products based on this yet. They are assured to be pretty expensive since the vendors are expected to make them work so the support is a costly requirement. However I think there is an opportunity for someone to offer a package of known good hardware with the software for the DIY/Hobbiest to work from.

Even though it seems a cop-out and comes with stuff you don't need (disk drive, software) this box from Dell: http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/services/dimen/c521_DDCWCA1?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
has a processor and a chipset that should work with no problems as either a core or a media director. And comes with a warranty. And its $359. As for media adapter type devices, there is a lot of work ahead to port LinuxMCE to run in one of those.

Feature requests & roadmap / Re: ELO Touchscreen support?
« on: April 02, 2007, 04:40:30 pm »
Update:
On ELO's web site if you 1) use Internet Exploder and 2) register they have a package builder that will build a package and give detailed instructions for installing in a number of distributions. I will be going through the drill later today. Its not quite as simple as an apt-get but it has promise.

Feature requests & roadmap / Re: This most come to Playstation 3!!!
« on: April 02, 2007, 08:41:27 am »
The PS3 run Linux and its published. Porting the media Director component should be possible. Some parts will be a lot of work. And integrating the PS3's internal media player will be a challenge- however it will bring integration of BluRay playback into LMCE. Probably won't be able to compy or pass the BluRay  content around the network. But an ideal MD for everything else. And the player in it may be much better than Xine (or a clone).
