3  LinuxMCE / Users / Sony Vaio VGX-Xl201 MOD to a bluray drive-wrong model number....my mistake on: January 27, 2009, 08:18:22 pm
I want to swap out the DVD drive in my jukebox with a bluray drive using the instructions below. Given this how can I provide the proper driver to Linuxmce so that this will still work with my Core.

OK, you need two things, a Sony BC-5600S Blu-ray drive (BD-ROM/DVD/CD RW) and a slimline SATA to standard SATA converter cable. Both are available from a variety of sources but eBay is probably your cheapest option. I paid £95 for the drive and £3 for the cable. The cable is required because the BC-5600S has a slimline SATA connector and without it you won't be able to supply power to the drive. The converter cable has a molex type power connector but unfortunately there aren't any molex connectors inside the XL201. Therefore you will also need a SATA to molex convertor, or do as I did and modify the existing power cable which takes power from the motherboard.

1. Open up the case and remove the cross brace so you can access the drive.
2. Disconnect the power and SATA cables (small release catch underneath).
3. Unscrew the two screw which hold the drive caddy in place. The caddy will now slide back and can be removed.
4. Unscrew the two small screws which hold the ATAPI 50-pin to SATA Adapter in place. This can now be removed as it is no longer required with the BC-5600S.
5. Unscrew the four screws which hold the drive in the caddy. The drive can now be removed from the caddy.
6. If your BC-5600S doesn't have a facia (mine didn't) you can remove the one from the orginal drive by pushing in the little plastic tabs.
7. Now basically reverse the process with the new drive. Screw the BC-5600S to the caddy and then slot and screw the caddy into place.
8. Connect the drive to the motherboard using your (modified) converter cable.
9. Vista will automatically detect the new drive and install the required drivers (if you are using XP you will probably need to provide a driver).

Finally, remember that there is no native support for Blu-ray in Media Center. DVDs and CDs will continue to play OK through Media Center but you will need some other software to play Blu-ray. You can use WinDVD or PowerDVD if you already have them, but the best choice is Arcsoft TotalMedia Theater as this integrates better with Media Center.

4  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Neuros as an MD....please provide feedback on: January 27, 2009, 08:00:40 pm
Thank you all for your input. I understand that the box would be completely taken over by the Linuxmce Core system. Just curious as to the possibilities of different MD hardware and like to get a more informed decision from those more knowledgeable than myself. I've been around a while (since March 21, 2007) and have been experimenting with my 710 system on and off trying to find the best combination of value and ease of use (wife and kids). I have to temper my desire to tinker with keeping the family happy. Thanks colinjones, posde, and of course the famous/infamous Zaerc  Grin

8  LinuxMCE / Feature requests & roadmap / Any Intersest in GPS tracking ? on: May 31, 2008, 09:05:06 pm
I just wanted to gauge interest in GPS tracking in Linuxmce. If we integrated something like this http://www.opendmtp.org/article/webserv/ then we could track our cars..or anything else we wanted from our couch...Giving us our own lowjack system. Anybody else think this is interesting?
9  LinuxMCE / Users / Control the Wii ON/Off via bluetooth possible ? on: May 24, 2008, 10:58:55 am
Just curious about turning the Wii on and off via bluetooth from LinuxMCE, is it now possible ? If not what would be needed ? I know the usefulness is debatable, but I'm controlling a lamp that is a foot away from me via z-wave so what the heck...lol
10  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: What can our community learn form vCrib and vice versa on: April 24, 2008, 09:19:24 pm
Thanks to all,
Really I just wanted to provoke intelligent conversation. Maybe spawn some interesting ideas. In no way did I want to start a fight. We have some very talented and committed people on this project and it has inspired me to sharpen my development skills so that I can contribute in a meaningful way. We are more advanced then vCrib but it never hurts to look at what is out so that we can better the project as a whole.

The voice commmand stuff did initially catch my eye as well as the 3d wireframe floor plan and his implementation of RFID. I just wanted to see if the community knew of this project and what they thought of it because I am not "deep " enough in LMCE knowledge to judge how difficult implementing such things are or even if they are implemented. He is using a different development platform and sometimes that can overcome my internal bias as to what is possible and what is not. Like most of us here I "solve problems" for a living because I love it . Now I just need to find an interesting and compelling question and to take action.

Noticed this software while poking around on the web. It looks interesting

I was wondering what we as a community could learn form them and vice versa ? Any constructive thoughts on this project and comparing and contrasting it to LMCE?

Same problem here...still trying to get it right... but I have minimized it by playing with the same web admin settings as described above.
14  LinuxMCE / Users / Westinghouse TX 42" LCD Device Template on: April 12, 2008, 03:35:30 am
I am having a hard time setting up the Device Template for my 42" Westinghouse TX LCD. I have followed the wiki instructions at this link http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Control_a_TV_or_cable/satellite_box I have disabled pop-up blocking within firefox, but I am not prompted for the number of tuners like the wiki describes. I have done a wider google search and found nothing, I also have been playing with the device template for about a week. What am I doing wrong ? I have seen a number of people with this model TV so I know I am missing something obvious. Thanks for your help in advance
15  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Westinghouse LCD TV Service Port... USB? a cable for it? on: April 12, 2008, 03:22:20 am
I have a 42 inch westinghouse model and contacted the company asking the very same thing. The official stance is that the USB port is for firmware upgrade. ( Which I have finished..it solved a locking issue) and NOTHING else is to be plugged into that port. Now customer service has been known to be inaccurate so you can give it a shot at your own risk and report back if your really curious.
