Users / Re: Media hangs. Xine lockup?
« on: April 19, 2007, 03:07:38 pm »
I have upgraded my ram from 512mb ddr2 pc3200, to 1024gb pc5200 ddr2,
The old ram (which reported no errors in memtest86) is removed from the system.

I have been using playlist now, and the system has been playing for 24hours with no issues.
(earlier if it was on playlist it would just hang, and after a GOOD while go back to the orbiter, (not continue in the playlist))

So could this be that for a stable system there would be a minimum requirement of >512mb ram.

Best regards,

Installation issues / Re: Why only vesa?

Hi there,

I guess the first time you laucned the lshwd -id it stated that it would use driver NV for your "VGA compatible card" as you can read in my walkthrough i had same issue, and now it's trying to use the VESA driver since it can not find the NVIDIA drivers to use,

Have you tried installing them now?
www.nvidia.com

Can't see anything of interest in the log.
I'll try upgrading my RAM tomorrow and check if it helps.

If not i'll paste some logs.

Users / Media hangs. Xine lockup?
« on: April 14, 2007, 03:13:28 pm »
Hi,

I have noticed sudden lockups on the media, e.g videos played in linuxmce, the system can work for days without problems, but sometimes it locks completley up playing a random video file (music videos for instance), checking which process uses most ressources i get that Xine_Player uses 99% of the cpu, on my 3.4ghz system.

When it "locks-up" the audio normally works fine for a while, and it displays approx 1picture pr 10th second!
and i can't do anything with my remote.

issuing a killall -9 Xine_Player (e.g takes 2 minutes to log-on via ssh to the box because all ressources goes to xine) then it takes a minute or two and the orbiter re-launches and everything is working again.

What could cause this behaviour, does anyone else notice this, the system hardware should be fine even though i should've had more RAM,

memtest86 reports no problems with the ram.

The system:
3.4ghz p4 with 512mb ddr2 ram.
nvidia 6600gt card with 256mb ram.

Great to hear you got it working, let's hope it stays like that when updates are "pushed"/downloaded to it :-))

Hi,

If you read my steps carefully you should see that lshwd -id changes from nv to nvidia, and it will fallback to vesa if it can't find the files, this is when you install the NVIDIA*  file.

Hope you get it running

01:00.0 10de:0221:0000:0000 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corp.|GeForce 6200 (nv)

Try to edit the Cards file on that system, like i've described some posts earlier,
since this system is showing that it will install/use the "nv" driver

"A successfull" edit of the Cards file should give you nvidia

Can you paste output from: lshwd -id
from your diskless system?

sixback, yes i bet your issues will be fixed using the method i've described, feel free to PM me if you got any questions.
bawbag31: That sounds correct if you are using a generic linux distro, but have you tried this with linuxMCE (it basically takes over your system, xorg configuration included), and changes the file upon startup

e.g to change resoloution in linuxMCE avwizard OR the admin page /(click media director) should be the correct way, then full regen orbiter/all.
And you also would need to quick reload router i think.

Pluto's xorg file is called xorg.conf.pluto /etc/X11/xorg.conf.pluto

Hope this helps anyone.

Installation issues / Re: Wireless Card does not connect
« on: April 06, 2007, 04:45:36 am »
Short answer: *Yes, i stronlgy believe that should not be a problem.

You dont mentioned _What_ wireless card you actually have, so this is just the basics.

1) You have to check your /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf file, if what's in it is correct. (e.g essid, password, encryption type as for instance preshared key)
2) You will have to know what command in console starts your wlan up.
e.g
iwconfig wlan0 up
then you need to start the wpa_supplicant with correct paramters.

The couple of lines which you find fire up your device (e.g check with ifconfig & iwconfig) and ofc try to ping some page.
needs to be inserted into an init script (so that it starts upon boot process) i guess linuxMCE shouldnt have any issues then if the network card is initialized before it launches. if so everything can be fixed :-)

Thank for the reply, found the issue:

I had two media directors (Two machines the core & a "diskless") Set to same room,
that caused the troubles.

I dont know if i read your problem correctly, but this might be a soloution

press ctrl-alt-F1 (To get to a shell)

sudo echo nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx > /etc/resolv.conf

Doing so you can change the nameserver/resolver from a console

Press alt-f11  or alt-f7 to jump back to the install,

Think you'll need to go for a 8GB card,
Quickly checking my install, seems like it takes a little above 4.5GB
I'm sure it can be trimmed a LOT, but then it would be a pain to install it, since this is set up with openoffice and everything during initial install.

Sidetrack:
PS I've had good success with lexar cf cards, more the less NO success on Kingston CF cards(1gb & 2gb card), (e.g file systems getting corrupt, trouble with partitioning and such)
Even though i havent tried i guess Sandisk would work fine.

Surely i'd think kingston would be superior on things like this, but not on CF cards if you ask me.

But i'm interested to check if twinmos cards work fine (They are cheap).
Using CompactFlash cards a lot myself with cheap ebay ide adapters.
My home automation epia system with 1gb lexar  has had no issues til now (60days uptime currently)., and my carputer with a 4gb lexar has NO issues. (which boots approx 2 times/day)
