Users / Re: Good remote for LinuxMCE?
« on: June 15, 2007, 02:59:40 pm »
@eddy_alfatec
this gyro mouse works very nice in linuxmce. it is recognized and installed automatically.

77
if you are using a gyration mouse, you can control the system only with this. it's like a wireless mouse.

Users / Re: Newbie with questions...big surprise!

you are not asking too much. the only problem you could have is to connect the receivers, because they must have a serial port to connect to PC (or usb). also, it's recommended to use a wired network (preferably a gigabit network).

i don't know if you read this but i found a good how-to about dvb cards in linux. and it seems that your card is supported. here is the how-to: http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page.

Users / Re: How to add new media types and formats?
« on: June 14, 2007, 09:23:03 am »
the bad news is that you can add .rm files in media directories but you will not see them in orbiter or in database. i've made the same thing with some .dts files and they were not listed in orbiter, even if i changed the extension from .dts to .mp3 ;D. it seems that UpdateMedia script scans and adds to the database only a few formats.

ATI cards are supporting composite extension for Xorg but not for linux, for the moment. i've read a how-to for installing latest ati drivers on ubuntu 7.04 and it was recommended to disable composite option.

Users / Re: Remotely start XINE_PLAYER (e.g wakeup)
« on: June 13, 2007, 05:45:14 pm »
as long as you can play mp3, xine_player works. regarding your question, if misterhouse can send wake on lan packets to the core at a predefined time and the core can do timed events at a time, it should work without problems.

Developers / Re: Using XBox as an MD
« on: June 13, 2007, 12:35:53 pm »
@darrenmason
the sources of LinuxMCE are released under GPL. and the "pluto" kernel is not a special one. it's just the kernel from Kubuntu. so, you can apply some patches and build a custom kernel which will be used by linuxmce to boot or to install on an Xbox MD.

have installed linuxmce as a dedicated machine?

98% depends on your hardware (cpu, mainboard). today, the hardware is built to consume not so much energy.

Users / Re: Is it worth it?
« on: June 11, 2007, 11:55:44 am »
installing kubuntu is very very easy and straightforward. also knoppmyth is a very good alternative for a media center. but linuxmce allows you to make very easy broadcasting for other computers in the house. and you can use different kinds of remote controls without headaches.

6. there is a function in linuxmce for security for using a security camera. but, after my opinion you can use also a usb camera only if it si supported by linux.
7. yes
8. you can control it if it has an interface to communicate with the computer (a serial port) and the serial codes.
