Users / UI2 control - can't set absolute position with gyro mouse
« on: May 06, 2007, 04:43:26 am »
I read in the wiki

Quote
When media is playing, you can use the normal keys on the i/r remote to control the media playback and volume. Or press F6 or the 'media' button on the gyro remote, and then move left and right to adjust playback speed, or move up and down to skip through chapters/tracks/channels/songs depending on the type of media. With the left and right movement you have both absolute and relative. Absolute means keep the button held down while you move left and right. This is quite useful with the gyro remote. Press the left button, and if you move your hand all the way to the left you are at the beginning of your media, all the way to the right and you are at the end. Or, tap and release the button, then when you move left and right you are in relative, or jog shuttle mode. Move slowly to the right for slow motion forward, further to the right for 400x forward, back to the left to rewind, and so on.

However, click and holding the left most "media" button makes the cursor jump around and not do much.  Click and release that button brings up the media control.  click and hold the left mouse button moves the shuttle/jog control back and forth, click and release does the same thing.

I also can't seem to play/pause the video from the gyro mouse, seems that these are both pretty basic functions, so I'm guessing that I'm reading something wrong and all we have is a case of PEBKAC (or in this case.. PEBMAC) :-)

Installation issues / after "lmce on boot" install, brings up tty1
« on: April 25, 2007, 12:00:47 am »
I did an clean install of ubuntu, installed the nvidia drivers, and finally got through a clean install on this box.  Since this generic GeForce 6500 doesn't work with the vesa drivers, I selected the option to boot into lmce instead of Ubuntu.

On reboot, it goes through it's normal screen boot up, but where I would expect to see the LMCE startup, it drops to text and shows some processes starting up.  the page clears and says
Code: [Select]
Starting up ...
Loading, please wait...
kinit: name_to_devt(/dev/disk/by-uuid/long_series_of_numbers_I'm_not_typing) = sda (8,5)
kinit: trying to resume from /dev/disk/by-uuid/same_series_above
kinit: No resume image, doing normal boot...

Ubuntu 7.04 dcerouter tty1
dcerouter login:

Now - there were no errors in the x.org startup log and I was able to startx once from the command line and launch LMCE from the start menu - however it locked the computer up and on reboot I now get an error trying to launch

Code: [Select]
(WW) NVIDIA: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:13:0) found
(EE) Failed to load module "wfb" (module does not exist, 0)

The kernel with 6.10 doesn't see my network card or sound card however, the one with 7.04 works without a problem, I guess unless there is something to try, next round will be to fire up 6.10 and manually compile the alsa beta drivers by hand and put a PCI nic in.

Users / pluto-ati drivers vs official fglrx ati drivers
« on: April 04, 2007, 08:24:18 am »
I have things installed on my HP zv6130 with an ATI xpress 200M video card.  UI1 runs fine and UI2 runs with some lag.  The default ubuntu ati drivers do not display the svga output on my tv correctly, it overscans badly (no settings on the tv correct this).  When I install the fglrx drivers, the display is exactly how it should be.  When LMCE is running, it's not using the system drivers as the overscan problem returns.

Is there a config option somewhere to say to use the installed system drivers as opposed to the ones installed during the install process?  Will removing the pluto-ati-drivers packages correct this or break things beyond repair?

thanks in advance.  If I can get the system running the display correctly, it will be worth the investment to beef up the ram from the somewhat anemic 512meg that's in there and max out the side port memory on the video card :-)

When the system I was using to test this lost all USB (laptop) I started looking for other options and ran across this on pricewatch.  Now, I've not tested, bought or endorse this barebones system, but after reading the "what to expect page" I did find this barebones sff  http://www.eaglebit.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=EB-110-00002&Click=14 which could be built into a fairly decent system for under $350.  Here is what I used for my price list (off pricewatch.com)

P4 2.6
512Meg
200gb SATA
8x AGP GeForce 6200
tuner card

If anyone knows of a better budget base system, please post.  The system I was using to test lost all USB which makes it almost worthless for this project :-)

Feature requests & roadmap / Tivo
« on: March 31, 2007, 07:19:19 am »
I'd love to see LinuxMCE be able to see a networked Tivo, pull the files off, convert them and make them available for viewing.  I have 2 DirecTivos in the house and have no plans to replace them :-)

Installation issues / well, that didn't work.
« on: March 15, 2007, 08:59:26 pm »
Being new to the project, I have some questions for the installer and maybe a place to look for why it's not installing all the way.

I've gone through several reinstalls of this system and none of them have worked as expected, usually stopping when it hits a package it can't download, even running the install from CD. Where does the installer drop it's log files so I can check more in depth of why/where it's failing?  The one time it went through the entire install and asked me to reboot, the icon to start linuxmce never was installed in the app menu.

It does run, even with the failed install and takes me through the guided setup.  It renders all the screens and then goes to a black screen, either popping up a message saying it can't reach the orbiter or justs there on a black screen.

Many thanks,

Stu

Installation issues / 64 bit version of the installer?
« on: March 14, 2007, 06:43:45 am »
I'm running the 64bit version of ubuntu 6.10 - will there be a 64 bit version of the installer, or is there another install method that I should use?

Thanks in advance,

Stu

I might have missed the model number somewhere... but that is a MUST have for giving this a try :-)
