I managed to get it working thanks guys. Seems the usb3 ports don't work well with booting. Tried a USB2 port and it's going well

Hi guys.

I have been setting up my freenas 8.0.4 on my new pc. The freenas installation is not picking up my thumb drive to install the operating system on. Can someone offer any advice? I am running the installation by booting from the cd installation disk. The insaller is picking up the hard drives. The BIOS does show the USB flash drive in the boot selection.

I want to use the NAS as my main storage for all of my home media.

I am not very familiar with Linux, but the next step for my installation will be to build a core/hybrid and a media director to play all my HD media on my home theater system.

Hi guys

I am busy putting a NAS together and I will be using 3x 2TB hard drives (SATA 6GB/S). I was going to run the system in RAID5, but I have recently started reading about ZFS file system. I understand that it is not advisable to use RAID with ZFS. I don't know much about ZFS.

What would be the best configuration for my system. A ZFS system or a RAID5?

Is RAID-Z the best compromise?

Hi guys
I have read through the wiki and a lot of info on this forum. I have been scavinging all the old systems in my house. I have three pc's available.

I plan on buying an MSI a75ma-g55 motherboard with a 2 core FM1 chip. 8GB RAM and 3x 2TB harddrives.

I also have two old 64bit pc's. One has a MSI K9N6GM motherboard, AM2 socket and a AsRock K8S8X motherboard, socket 754. Both boards can only support up to 2GB DDR2 RAM. Will either of these boards be usable as a core or should I look at getting a quad core AMD?

I also have an intel P5PE-VM motherboard lying around. I was thinking of using this for my first MD.

Any advice on choosing my hardware would be appreciated.
