Installation issues / How to enable ICMP requests
« on: January 18, 2012, 04:12:25 pm »
I have all the connectivity working between my external and internal networks - yay!  Except ping.  So I can live without it, but it aggravates me.  How is this configured?

As a test, I ran:
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p icmp -j ACCEPT

Now ping works.  But where do I place the configuration to allow ping at boot up?

Ubuntu forums suggest it is ufw.  I checked /etc/ufw/ufw.conf:

Code: [Select]
# /etc/ufw/ufw.conf

# set to yes to start on boot

So I'm not even sure its running.  Even so, the /etc/ufw/before.rules file contains the correct iptable rule so far as I can tell:

Code: [Select]
# ok icmp codes
-A ufw-before-input -p icmp --icmp-type destination-unreachable -j ACCEPT
-A ufw-before-input -p icmp --icmp-type source-quench -j ACCEPT
-A ufw-before-input -p icmp --icmp-type time-exceeded -j ACCEPT
-A ufw-before-input -p icmp --icmp-type parameter-problem -j ACCEPT
-A ufw-before-input -p icmp --icmp-type echo-request -j ACCEPT

Installation issues / Re: Canvassing for expereince with single NIC hybrid

Success!  If anyone is interested I totally got this working on a single WIFI nic!  If I sound excited, winning these battles when you aren't a Linux expert always feels good :)  I've made some rough notes on a wiki, and once I've tidied those up will post.

DVD playback was jittery at times though, which I thought odd because I stream HD movies from Netflix to my XBOX using the same gear, and same physical locations.  DVDs are ripped as ISO files in full quality, but obviously not HD.  About 24h after getting it working the HDD started going nuts, then hung.  When I forced a reboot I got a file system failure.  Need to create a bootable USB OS and do fsck (I think).  Once I've done that I'll add a final post on the quality of playback, and whether it was a transient HDD thing, or a limitation of the system.

Ahhhh - so its MDs that need a wired NIC to PXE boot.  Didn't understand that before.

What about a hybrid?  I presume the MD portion must be part of the install that boots from HD right i.e. it isn't like a 'regular' MD that'll need a wired NIC to boot?

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER!  I have read many wikis and forum posts:
  • Yes, I know WIFI NICs are bad for PXE booting
  • Yes, I know LMCE is designed on a 2-NIC design
Please don't feel you need to reply to my post if you only intend to point these things out!

This is my second install of LMCE hybrid, the first being a regular 2 x wired NIC build on an Acer Revo 3610 that worked okay (few issues with occasional freezing and loss of sound).  I've now moved into a rental home and I don't want to run ethernet to the hybrid sat behind my TV.  For one reason, my 2-year old likes to pull on cables lying on the floor!  I'd like to try a single WIFI NIC this time, just to see if it works and if not try a 2-NIC wifi-only approach  Two questions:
1.  Has ANYONE been successful with a single WIFI NIC?
2.  As a fall back, has anyone been successful with standard 2-NIC setup, but both WIFI?

I have a wireless N router which from what I can tell is better for PXE booting.  I have the NIC up and running, so tonight I will switch DHCP to the hybrid, and fire it up and see what happens.  My guess is a monumental fail, so this is a pre-emptive post!

Remember... We do these things not because they are easy.  We do them because they are hard.

Users / Re: MD won't play audio from read-only NAS share

Oh my God... apologies to all!  Complete user error.  I'd been using some software from a laptop to reorganise my music collection folder structure, and hadn't refreshed the database.  No wonder it couldn't find the files.  Resynched the media, and whaddyaknow.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I still have the problem with foreign characters not being picked up properly, but most of my music plays.  The NAS drive is still read-only for LMCE, and working fine.

Users / MD won't play audio from read-only NAS share
« on: July 08, 2010, 06:36:42 pm »
Hi... I'm finding that my LinucMCE hybrid won't play any audio tracs from a NAS share that is read only.

I'm about 80% through ripping my entire collection of CDs to .flac and storing them on a NAS drive.  I  have successfully added the NAS share to my LinuxMCE core, and tested playing back tracks to the MD.

Then I noticed some weired track names, which turned out to be rips with umlauts etc that the encoding didn't like.  Although I have lovingly ripped all my tracks accurately, I now found LinuxMCE was changing all the filenames with strange characters, truncating them (so "R√∂yksopp" became just "R").  As a short-term workaround until I fixed the encoding problem (assuming it can be fixed) I changed the LinuxMCE access to the NAS drive to read-only to prevent it overwriting filenames.  Unfortunately it now doesn't play any tracks at all.

Has anyone seek this behaviour?  Any solutions?

I'm going to try this thread to fix the encoding issue when I get home:

Installation issues / PXE boot VirtualBox 3.1.6
« on: May 12, 2010, 09:47:30 pm »
Hi, can anyone help me with a PXE network boot issue.  I've configured a very simple PXE-boot virtual machine using VIrtualbox 3.1.6.  However, it fails on boot with the following messages:

Code: [Select]
IP-Config: no response after 60 secs -giving up
/init: .: line 1: can't open /tmp/net-eth0.conf
Kernel panic - no syncing: Attempting to kill init!
atkbd.c: Suprious NAK on isa0060/serio0. Some program might be trying access to hardware directly

Screen shot also attached if that helps.  Anyone know what's up?

Okay, got the filtering and searching working by changing the permission on my NAS drive where all the files are stored.  I had the lmce user set to read only.

I cannot figure out how to get hierarchical browsing.  This doesn' make sense to me - if it works for Audio (I can browse into artist/album/track happily) why can't we have a hierarchical view for DVDs?

Users / Re: Acer Revo 1080p with 810?
« on: May 11, 2010, 12:44:51 pm »
I have mine (dual core) working at 1080p for a couple of weeks now, with no problem on video playback.  I didn't have to do anything special to get it working.

As regards HDMI audio, this really gave me a hassle for a few hours.  I did many things and I'm not really sure which one worked, but try these:
1.  Mute all of the IEC958 - this is the SPDIF output, and I had a theory that maybe despite selecting HDMI out it was really using SPDIF.
2.  Add users to the 'audio' group.  This was definitely necessary to get any sound out on the KDE desktop, but I'm not sure if it had any effect on LMCE.

Users / Belking F8T016 Bluetooth Dongle not working
« on: May 11, 2010, 12:39:31 pm »
Does anyone have any experience getting a Belkin F8T016 bluetooth dongle working?  Steps I have followed:

1.  Plugged in the dongle.  Device is detected and added to device tree, but MD does not discover any bluetooth devices.
2.  Launched KDE, see a bluetooth icon.  Click on it to access the device manager, but cannot find any other bluetooth devices.
3.  Found this thread:  Followed the steps, but result is the same.

Can anyone help?

A thought that occurs is that I had issues getting my HDMI output to play audio on the KDE desktop until I added users to the 'audio' group.  Is there something similar going on for bluetooth?

Yep, that's my experience with the CE orbiter - just fills the memory of the phone in about 30s.

I'm having issues with my bluetooth dongle (Belkin F8T016) but once I've overcome that I'll give the JavaMO a go.

The 'missing link' installer is an MSI for XP machines - not for WM6, or am I missing something?

Thingie - how do you begin to install the JavaMO?  Is there somewhere I can get the .jad or .jar files?

yes, it will still be all flat, it will still consolidate everything into one place, yes it WILL COMPLETELY IGNORE FILE AND FOLDER STRUCTURE. THIS IS INTENTIONAL

Yep, I understand that and that's how I like it too for the underlying file structure  Why should the file strucutre dictate the arrangement of items in the media browser?  But that's my point - the DB should understand limited hierarchies for boxed sets, 2-disc and multi-sided DVDs, and TV series.  Apologies again for referencing a Windows product, but that's how MyMovies does it and my wife loves it - ignores file structure but handles tv series and boxed sets.  Of course, you need to tell MyMovies which discs are hiearchical, but it's just a quick config setting.

Also - I'm finding filtering under 08.10 does't work.  Before I posted all this, I tagged a disc as 'Drama' and 'TV Show' and did an Amazon metadata lookup in Media Sync.  Results for filtering:
- Recently Used: No results (and yes, I've played the disc)
- Filename: No results
- Title:  Works fine.
- Performer:  Works fine
- Genre:  No results
- Director: Works fine.
- Filter on Media Type : doesn't work.

In writing this post I've just discovered that filtering on Genre now works if I have a user selected in the filter, rather than just 'Public', but why that should make a difference is beyond me and it doesn't affect filtering on 'TV Show'.

Users / Windows Mobile 6 Orbiters (HTC Touch HD)
« on: May 03, 2010, 12:18:33 pm »

Has anyone had any luck getting a WM6 mobile phone to work as an orbiter.  Specifically I have an HTC Touch HD that I'd like to get working.  The Windows CE CAB will intall, and I can get through the orbiter setup, but then PocketFrog just consumes all the memory on the phone until I have to reboot it.

I've seen on the wiki that someone got a WM5 XDAii working... does anyone know how this was done.

For bonus marks, has anyone had any luck getting the web orbiter to work on a mobile web browser?  I find it just keeps refreshing, and I can't actually work any of the buttons.

I ended up removing the wifi card and running the install again.  It worked.  C'est la vie.

I now have 810 beta running perfectly as a hybrid core/md on an Acer Aspire Revo R3610, if anyone's interested.  I'm just using 1 NIC, but finding its ability to route traffic from the virtual subnet onto my home network pretty slow, so I'm installing laptop orbiters, NAS drives etc on the virtual internal NIC to take advantage of plugnplay, then manually chaning the IPs to static IPs on the physical net.  This is working fine so far!
