Hi all,
I am using LinuxMCE to listen to podcasts now. One problem I am experenceing is that there is no way of finding out how far through the podcast I am. I have found that when you press menu you can see the time elapsed but not how long is left.
How do I do this?
Robert

Yes I have been working through Thom's screencasts. Have them all downloaded just need to watch and experiment.
What's the devlopment status of HADesigner? Is it an open source project? Are people working on it?
I must say I was surprised to find a windows only devlopment tool for linuxMCE.
I have had a lot of experence devloping C++ applications in MFC and I have recently been reading up on GTK+ and I am intrested in transfering my skills to cross platform tools.
I'm looking for a project to get involved in.
I have a list of tweaks I want to make to my linuxMCE UI to make it easier to use. I'm trying to work out the best way of achieving this. I was thinking the HADesigner would be something that help me do this.
I think I have to spend a fair bit of time studying the documentation if I am going to achieve anything.

Developers / HADesigner Screen Resolution problem
« on: May 17, 2009, 02:48:54 pm »
Hi,
I have followed the tutorials and setup the HADesigner on my Windows Laptop.
It's a Sony VAIO and runs in the resolution 1280x768.
I have a problem with the HADesigner.
The screen layout means that a lot of the controls are pushed off the bottom of the screen
no mater how much I rearrange the windows it is not possible to see some of the controls.
In the attached screen shot I have tried to pull down the sub window more but it has reached it's limit.
Has anyone else heard of this problem?
Any suggestions
Thanks
Robert

Hi,
Some stuff about me.
I currently work as an Oracle devloper programming PL/SQL scripts. My job also involves a lot of VBA devlopment.
I have a lot of experence in programming C++ on a windows PC.
I have devloped websites using drupal which has given me experence in LAMP (linux, apache, mysql and PHP)
I am also looking for a weekend project to get my teeth sutck into.

I have got a linuxMCE machine wirrhing away in the corner and I am trying to convince my self to use it and throw out my Windows Media centre but there are lots of niggling issues with usability. (I fequently start trying to watch something on my LinuxMCE PC, then get fed up and switch back to the windows one.)

I am thinking getting involved might mean that I can get stuck into fixing some of these issues that are stopping me let go of windows Media centre.

I should point out that I am not a linux hack. Over the last couple of years I have used ubuntu more and more. I spent the last week building an xorg.conf file for an ubuntu system to get the display working right. I am expanding my experence though: e,g, writing bash scripts and php programs:

Does anyone see a place for someone like me on the devlopment team?

Hi all,
I have just got my CORE to automatically download podcasts. (Without any extra software)
I was excited about how I did it so I wrote an explination of how I did it on the wiki:
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Setup_Automatic_podcast_download#Step_4_-_Add_your_own_podcasts

Firstly is adding this article to the wiki ok for me to do? As a linux MCE beginner it could be a bit of a case of the blind leadin the blind.

Secondly based on what I have done, can the 'experts' suggest improvements. I mean I understand that linuxMCE can tag the media. There is a lot more information in the XML file for each podcast item. I know how to make my bash scripts run mysql commands etc. Is there a way of altering them so that information read from the XML file can be loaded into the database so that LinuxMCE captrues it?

Thirdly I currently want to find out more about tagging media. Can anyone point me in the direction

I have watched screen cast part 1. It has explained some things. Is there a part 2, I would be intrested in how to tag media.
Also, the screen cast dosn't cover recording TV programs and selecting and viewing them. This would be useful as it's what I'm having trouble with.

Hi,
Thanks I will listen to the link and look at the designer and try and educate myself in how to use LinuxMCE properley. I do have friends frequently come over and they sometimes end up using the Media Centre PC to select music while we are having a party or something. I am hoping my issues are with setup and it's actually easier than I'm making it.
Is there an easy way to group shows under the title so all the series are displayed together?

Hi,
I have got past alsmot all of my thecnical issues with LinuxMCE but now I'm comming up with a lot of issues with the userinterface.
I have a Windows Media Centre PC but I am not a fan of microsoft. I hate the idea of all the DRM they are putting into windows and I want to move away from using propitery software I have no control over.

Although LinuxMCE is starting to make me change my opinion of windows media centre. A lot of the features I took for granted are simply not present in LinuxMCE. I have created a comparision documenting my exprences.

http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Metcarob's_Windows_MCE_vs_Linux_MCE_Comparison

I want to try out the advanced features on LinuxMCE, the media follow me, home security, home control, etc. but first I need to know it can do the media stuff that windows can.

I have a feeling there is something I am missing. Are there any alternative UI's for LinuxMCE that I can switch to?

« on: April 27, 2009, 09:03:10 pm »
Hi,
Pluto defintly needs an option to turn off the display of the mouse pointer as part of the UI, or in the webadmin on the server. I have no mouse at all plugger into my machine and the pointer still shows. I don't want to see it while I use the remote control.
I followed the file renaming instructions and now instead of the big mouse pointer I get the normal moust pointer. This is a little better but not perfect. I am pretty sure I did the rename correctly (See screen shot)
This needs to be logged as a feature request. Does anyone know where the feature request tracker is?

Hi,

I clearly should have joined these forums a long time ago. It would have saved me a lot of time.
XScale Windows CE.NET (Download)  has installed perfectly on my Obrit 2.
I have to get the wireless passwords working but It's a step in the right direction.
Thanks for your help with the orbiter.

I had a look at the HADesigner. Looks involved. I would have thoght it was a common thing. Normally on my media centre I watch a program then when I have watched it I delete it. Having delete as an option on the contect menu would be useful as I would use it every time I finished watching a program. I'm going to look into the HADesigner when I have more time.

Thanks again
Robert

Hi,
using username Robert password Robert has worked.
This is strange as it is NOT what I use for LinuxMCE admin. LinuxMCE admin user username Robert password *****
(Not *'s obviously)

I have tested the admin again. User name Robert password Robert does not work
username Robert password ***** does

This is werid. It dosn't matter to me as I am able to do what I need now but maybe a mistake has been made in smb.conf or something simular to cause this.

Thanks everyone for your help

I have the o2 xda orbit 2.

I tried with the standard Java virtual machine and I got an error message. (Unhandled Java error)
I then installed midlet manager which is a diffrent java virtual machine. When I run it in this VM I get JSR082.
Aparantly this is a bluetooth error that comes up when the VM dosn't support bluetooth. Aparantly pocketPC mobile phones are not good at supporting bluetooth.
One of my old mobile phones is an XdaIIi. I'll dust it off and have a go and see what that comes up with.

« on: April 26, 2009, 05:08:42 pm »
Hi,

I have a HYBRID linuxMCE machine with two network cards. One external on the internet and one internal.

I want to copy mp3 files from another computer on the intrenal lan. The other computer is running windows XP.

When open a window and enter \\dcerouter in the address bar I am prompted for a username and password. When I enter the username and password I use from the admin site it is not accepcted.

I have confirmed that the computer is on the internal network and that I can use exactly the same username and password to access the admins site.
(See attached screen shot which shows the admin site and the failing log in attempt.)

I have not changed any of the samba configuration in anyway.
Does anyone know what I can try to resolve this?

Robert

Hi,
I have fianlly got my LinuxMCE Core/Hybrid system up and more or less working.

I have tried various methods of controling it (XDA mobile didn't work, WII remote kinda worked but was no good)
I finally setteled on using a windows Media Centre controler plugged into a USBUIRT
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/USB_UIRT
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Windows_MCE_Remote
(Mines the 2nd from the left, 1039)

I have a windows Media Centre PC as my television which I have been using for years. I am trying to use LinuxMCE instead. I am hoping someone here can answer some basic questions reguarding usage.

1. When you are watching a recorded program and you have finished with it and want to delete it how do you do it? In Windows MCE you simply press the 'i' button on the remote which brings up a context menu. It has options like program info, restart and delete. I can't find any equilivant in LinuxMCE. The only way I can see to delete a program is by going to the recorded programs finding the program you want to delete and pressing delete. There must be a quicker way to delete what is currently being watched.

2. When I select a program to record I like it to start this 5 mins before the air time and finsih 10 mins after. I know how to set this manually for each recording. Does anyone know how to make this automatic?

Any help would be apreaciated.
Thanks
Robert
