MSI K8D MS-9131 MOTHERBOARD W/DUAL OPTERON 240 CPUS AND 2 GIGABYTES RAM

I bought 9 of these mainboards at the surplus auction of Virginia Tech.  They were pulled from working servers and would make nice LMCE cores.  I'm keeping one to do just that.

They have dual Opterons and 2 gig RAM installed.

$40 apiece

Send me an email if you're interested.

Users / Does a Dedicated Core Need a Video Card?
« on: March 30, 2013, 06:50:16 pm »
I have been advised, in response to a post on the "Installation" section, to replace 8.04 with 10.04 on a Poweredge 2850 that I intend to use as a dedicated core in a rack in the garage.

However, lest I waste time and energy, I'd like to know if the PE 2850 will work at all.

It appears that its Radeon 7000 onboard video will not allow X to setup and it also seems that there is no way to disable the onboard video or to replace or substitute it.

My question is...  Does a dedicated core have to have a video card at all?  Or a properly set up X environment?

Thanks.

Installation issues / No X on Poweredge 2850 - OK?
« on: March 30, 2013, 04:17:22 pm »
I installed 8.04 on a PE 2850 last night, I can't get X to run with the onboard ATI Radeon 7000 and according to Dell, there appears to be no way to either disable the onboard video or to add another card.  I get the "failed to setup X" screen with a red "OK" button that doesn't do anything.  It has the restricted ATI driver installed (or at least it says it does).

A few questions:

1. Has anyone had any luck getting X to run on a setup like mine?

2. Since I only intend to set this PE up as a dedicated core server in the garage - does it need X running at all?

3. Since I am an end-user and not much of a techie, how hard is it to set up a dedicated core without Sarah's lovely and patient assistance?

4. Would it be better to wipe the 8.04 and try the 10.04 installation?

Thanks

Installation issues / UI Menu Not Responding After SATA Install
« on: May 27, 2008, 08:29:58 pm »
I installed 7.10b3 (64 bit) on a 40 gig IDE drive on an ASUS board with an AMD Athlon FX processor and ran it as a hybrid.  No problems, worked fine.

Then I installed three brand new WD 320 gig SATA drives and the machine went nuts.  The admin page won't let me configure all three as a RAID 5 array (gives "damaged" error) and it doesn't give me the option of formatting the drives.  LinuxMCE recognizes the drives and lets me add them as public storage, but then after rebooting the UI does not respond to commands.  The cursor operates as normal, but the Flickr art loads and displays very, very slowly.

I have tried reinstalling the ISO from scratch without luck.  If I leave the SATA drives (or even just one or two drives) in the machine during installation, LinuxMCE recognizes them as a damaged RAID.  Deleting the RAID array from the system admin page and recreating a new array doesn't work- RAID creation fails with an error.  If I try to use the SATA drives as storage (without RAID) then the UI freezes up.

Drives are good (tested them on both XP and FreeBSD systems).  Any clue?

Users / Will a Dual 733 Mhz PIII do the job?
« on: May 14, 2008, 04:01:50 am »
I have an old Dell Poweredge 2400 with 1 gig ram and dual PIII 733 Mhz processors.

Is this enough horsepower to drive the core?
