Installation issues / failed to cache live kunbuntu cd

I get the following in the log when attempting to install ......

ERROR : Could not cache Kubuntu Live CD

the machine was initially a basic ubuntu but I put
kunbuntu 7.10 on it by changing the apt sources to the
gutsy ones and
doing an 'apt-get install kubuntu-desktop'

when the MCE installer askes im using the all three iso's
straight from the harddrive.
The md5sums for all three iso's are fine.

does anybody understand whats going on here?
