Users / Re: Will beryl or compiz break LMCE? (see bottom of thread)
« on: December 19, 2007, 04:32:13 am »

The bigger problem is that the new design of the MD UI will shift allot of the alpha-blending stuff to the new KDE WM, as stated by Paul... this will effectively kill all other WM options for LinuxMCE... this shift i all heartedly disagree with...

Edit: I forgot to mention that I did install Cedega and Crossover Office (two Wine variants) on my Core and they worked just fine.

So when you say "new design" do you mean Linuxmce 7.10? or do you include 7.04 as well?

Thanks for the reply about Wine.

Beryl (and Compiz) will NOT work, that's for gnome (afaik) .. and it will fight with the MD.
Wine, I'm not sure...

I've seen it on kubutnu, so it is possible.
http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/x11/beryl-kubuntu
But you are saying it will fight the media director?  What if I only have one core/hybrid and no MDs?

I'm going to be building a system for my home, can anyone help me with a known working hardware list.

(...)
Before Thom rips me again to read the wiki, I have seen the hardware section.  What I'm hoping for is user input on hardware they've used and that works well.  :)

If these discussions produce some real user feedback with real HW, please update the wiki Hardware article.

I just did a build and got it working (though I am not close to really testing it yet-playing video/music/recording live tv.  All I have accomplished is an apparently successful install and ui2 with alpha blending) using the AN-M2HD (not using the onboard graphics--This is more of a challenge but possible) Nvidia 6200LE (make sure you turn off onboard graphics! :))  AMD 64 X2 4000+, 2GB of Corsair Ram, an abit airpace wilress card wlp-01 (a major pain to get working but possible with ndiswrapper), asus 18x DVDR, Antec NSK2480 case, two maxtor rebranded seagate 320GB drives.  So far works fine.  Setting it up took me weeks :) but mostly b/c I am a complete newbie to linux and I haven't built a pc in 5 years.  Most of my installation problems were due to bios settings set incorrectly for my set up.    I still need to try connecting this to my television (i set LMCE up with a 17" dell moniter), install the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950 ATSC NTSC USB HD TV Tuner (which I hear takes some doing in linux).  I also have an ADS tuner, but I don't think it works in linux.

Oh by the way I am using this as a hybrid not a dedicated core.  So I am losing a lot of functionality, but I just wanted to test it out first.

ok so i searched the forum and found the answer.  So if adept will break LMCE, is there a list of safe programs we can add?  I want to give this some gaming capability and add gimp.

My dsl is giving me 715kbs down and 115kbs up.

Hey another question :)  I'm new to this (Linuxmce/kubuntu and linux in general); just got it to work (getting wireless to work on my airpace wlp-01 card was a real challenge).  Normally kubuntu would have the adept package manager right?  Has it been removed to protect linuxmce?  Is there a add/remove program manager like adept, and If I download packages will it break LMCE?  Sorry if this has been answered dozens of times already.

Anyone else experience this?  Is it the flkr photostream?  Is there anyway to turn that off so I can see if the net speed picks up?

Did you say Y to update xorg.conf
and Did you say Y to reboot ??

When I do this the wizard starts upon boot.
If you are using an additional video card did you disable the on-board  video.
In theory the 6200 should be supported right from the DVD without needing to update the nvidia.
If you haven't disabled the on-board video I would start there.

You can start the wizard by holding down the shift key when booting at the beeps if you don't have a pc speaker just press and hold the shift button for a few seconds a few times during boot.

If this doesn't work I would try pulling the video card and use the on board video I set mine to 256 mb.
Then try the 123 process again.

Tk, I didn't know how to disable the onboard graphics--but you were right; that was the problem.  In bios I had to set "iGPU Frame Buffer Control" to "Manual" and select "Disable."  I can't believe how many hours I could have saved myself, if I had figured this out sooner!  Thanks!  I got kubuntu 7.04 to load to desktop! woo!

Thanks, TK.  I will give it a try.

3. Run av wizard  as normal

Hey tkmedia,

I am also using the AN-m2hd board and I followed your instructions to install the nvidia drivers.  That seems to work.  But how do you "run the av wizard" normally?  I still can't get it to start.  I got it to start once, a fluke it seems since I can't replicate those results, following the instructions of RDAC here: http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=2294.5;wap2.  But my screen has only flashed back and forth on my first install---I had to try to reinstall b/c of someother f-up on my part.  Yikes.  Now my screen shows the login as described by RDAC, but then it flashes to another screenand doesn't return, even after i press "2" (which i had to do last time for it to go back).  Anyway, if you or anyone else can help me get into the avwizard that would be grand.

P.S. I also have a 6200 LE card, but that shouldnt make a difference right?

aha! yes i just needed to plug in with a wired connection and it seems to be working now.

14
This seems like it might work for me but when I type in the http address it says, "Resolving albertomilone.com... failed: Name or service not known."

I'm pretty sure my wireless internet connection isn't working--I need to set it up, but of course I can't do that at this point.  Is the solution to go with wired internet for install, or am I missing something?

Installation issues / First boot after 0704 quick dvd install hangs
« on: December 05, 2007, 10:41:43 am »
I got through the initial install, removed the dvd from the tray as instructed, it rebooted and now it hangs here:

I am a complete newb with linux and linuxmce and I am probably hopeless.

I tried holding shift down here and pressing number 5 (since I have my tv connected to my 6200LE Nvidia card via s-video) but it still hangs at this point.  I didn't hear any beeps, but I'm not sure my sound is up and running either.

My hardware is:
Abit AN-M2HD mobo
Geforce 6200 LE
AMD 4000+ X2 dual core
asus dvdburner
two maxtor 320 GB drives
2gb corsair ram
wireless usb mouse and keyboard
wireless network card

Thanks in advance for any help!
