Hi,

I think I promised to get back to you on this sorry!

From the command line type;

etherwake <mac-address of device> or even moonID (for MD/PC's)

try;

man etherwake

for more info. This will send a 'magic packet' to the device targeted and as long as that device has the bios & Network interface options to do WOL then your in business. Obviously you could build some scripts to make this work more slickly and also trigger those scripts based on other events or even time of day etc etc.

Hope this helps

Andrew

Thanks for the reply Andrew..
I sorta understand what you are saying, but again i know only just enought to install LMCE and get it running...   beyond that i am about as usefull as tits on a bull...    so as far as scripst are concerned, it's way out of my scope..

but anyway, thank you for trying..    :-)

I'm not 100% sure about your question, but I'll go ahead and answer.  While obviously you're going to need the core/hybrid running at all times to have DHCP and the other functionality, you can shut down all the Media  Directors (thin clients) and wake them up as needed via WOL (assuming your MD supports it).  As far as NASs go, I don't think the WOL functionality has been extended to support those.  I don't even know if most of those even support WOL.  But if you are using a PC as a NAS, it might not work out of the box, but it sounds doable.

thanks pete..
i am in fact using a PC as a server...  i shouldn't say NAS because it's innacurate.
I am a current Media Portal user, but wish to try LMCE..  From within MP, i can select the server and click " WAKE UP ". This sends a WOL packet to the server.

I am looking at being able to do the same thing from within LMCE .

Currently, the server is running Windows Home Server, which i would like to keep.  It's actually a decent piece of software.

Anyway, thanks for the help..   :-)

Hi all...

Would anyone know if it is possible to WOL another PC from within LMCE ?

What i am after is perhaps a button you can click on to wake up the PC in question.

The reason i ask, is because i have a server which is only used for about 2 hrs a day at most, and would be silly to have it sit there running for no reason the rest of the time.

The core server will be on 24/7, but the other ( media ) server need not be.

Any one know how i could achieve this ?   btw..  i know nothing about linux.  I am hopefully migrating over soon.

Thank you

thanks for the replies guys...
i got it working by using a different HDD. The HDD was the only common piece of hardware i had used on the 2 systems so it made sense see if it caused the problem...   as it turned out, i was right.

Hi all..
I am thinking of migrating over.
I will be setting up a core unit in the garage which will have 3 tv tuners connected.
In the house, i will have 2 media directors, and as i understand it, they do not need a hard drive.

My questions is this :
If i set up the core without alpha blending ( UI2 ), will this affect the MD's ?
If the answer is no, do the MD's have to have an nVidia based video card ? Or is all the alpha blending taken care of by the core ?

Sorry if i sound blonde, but i am still trying to get my head around all this.

The reason i ask all this, is because i have plenty of ATI based cards lying around...  however, in the demo video, it mentions thin clients...  how do you get UI2 on a thin client ??

cheers

Installation issues / new install will not start...
« on: September 30, 2007, 07:28:06 am »
Hi all...
Just performed a new install from the DVD onto a spare machine.
However, after the install finishes, i get the KUBUNTU splash screen for about 3 minutes ( does nothing and progress bar does not move ).
After this, i get a black screen with this message :

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs)

I have now tried this on 2 different machines with same results.

Any ideas ?

thank you

Thanks for your help Andrew.

Could you elaborate on the WOL issue ?  My NAS can be woken up from an OFF state. Quite a neat feature actually.  Right now, i have MP wake the NAS when needed.  Once the NAS has booted, i can then access my network shares.

I have to power down the NAS because windows home server cannot be placed into standby or hibernate.
Also, for reasons i don't want to get into, i need to stick with WHS .

btw..   i know nothing about linux at all...    this is all new to me.

thanks again..  :-)

Hi all...
First time poster here.
I am currently a Media Portal user who is in need of a more stable solution.

I am thinking of trying LMCE, but i need these answered first :

1 - I have a Windows Home Server PC running as a NAS which only needs to be on about 2 hrs per day. Within MP  ( media portal ) i can WOL this NAS. Can this be done from within LMCE ?

2 - How are people cataloging their DVD TV Series Box Sets ?  I have 6 different DVD series box sets all ripped to my NAS in Divx format which i would like to catalog in this way :  Series -->  Season --> Episode.  Is this doable ? Or something similar...

3 - If i have a PC as a Media Director in the lounge room setup to network boot, does it still require a hard drive ?

thank you.  :-)
