Very interesting concept. Are you using ZFS with LMCE810? Should this be implemented before loading LinuxMCE or can it be after?

no i was using zfs in 710 and the older vers. you will have install zfs after installing linuxmce.

Hi,

I was using ZFS in 810 i.e. created the ZFS pool in kubuntu and mounted it manually to the file system used by my LinuxMCE core. However I never managed to get my LinuxMCE core to recognize it in the same way as it does with raid and mounting the ZFS pool manually was not a solution that allowed me ta take the benefit of the LinuxMCE solution and work in the long run.
So I am now using raid instead of zfs, most likely this was due to my limited knowledge of LinuxMCE.
I really liked ZFS and it would be very nice to use it again so if you have any sugestions on how the ZFS pool can be configured to work with LinuxMCE it would be very much appreciated.

true manually mounting the file system is not the way that linuxmce wants you to do things. but at that time i said to hell with that because zfs is way... better then the software raid that comes with linuxmce. so i set out to figuring out how linuxmce mounts it's stuff. all the software is doing is auto mounting the share and making links that point back to the shares on the core or md if the share is there. one thing i didn't link about the auto mounting was once it makes the mount it puts it in a some kind of other folder and not in the video folder so you know where it is. once it's in that other folder you can't use the filename view as it's not in the video folder the auto mounter doesn't link to it. the will show up in the title view but i don't like the title view as i have a lot of files. so all i did was made the link to the zfs mount place in the video folder and did the same for my md's with a line in the rc.local to auto mount the share and that's it's. you only need zfs on the core the rest is taking care of by smbfs really. but all this is just my 2 cents.  ;D

goku, you should think about folding ZFS as a package into LinuxMCE...

sorry but i don't have the skill or the time to try and learn how to do it. i was hoping it would get added some where down the line. i have since moved on to hardware raid. zfs is good if you are looking for a cheap way to get something up and running. as a whole i would wait till they figure out a way to better expand the raid array once it's been made.

Users / phpMyAdmin and 710 b3

just wanted to post this to let people know if any one else runs into the problem. installed phpMyAdmin and was having problems getting to http://ip_address/phpmyadmin. i wasn't able to find the answer on the forum. so went looking on the web and found there is symlink that points to /var/www/phpmyadmin -> /usr/share/phpmyadmin. this symlink wasn't made when i installed phpmyadmin so i had to manualy add it to fix the problem.

Installation issues / Re: RAID setup

Has anyone tried to set up a raid array on their core to store media?  Any help would be much appreciated.

I tryed it but ran into problems. when you get that DEGRADED, REBUILDING it means it building the spare that will take over for the raid if one of your disk fails. that process will take a long time on avg if you have larg disks. i didn't try a hradware raid. i was doing the software raid that comes with linux mce. it works but for me it wouldn't keep the raid in ok status. i keep getting degraded or failed and at times it would just remove my hard drives. it was driving me nutz. i tryed bypassing the web gui and making the raid on the console but was having no luck. so to do a raid 5 on linux mce i installed zfs and things are good. zfs is way.... better then the raid tool that comes with linux mce to me. my hardware was tested on gentoo for about a year so it was stable before moving to linux mce.

The expensive video card won't help for video. (I know. . .) The premium video cards are build for gaming and advanced graphics rendering. None work as well as a chip based media adapter with optimized hardware for video playback.  The 6150 on board video is about as good as it gets on PC today and its not real good. (The Windows drivers are no better, same problems with tearing, deinterlacing etc.) The best I have seen is from the VIA CX700 Fiirestation, but even then its not perfect.

But I watch it every day with no problem.

Get an Asus M2NPV-VM and use the on board video. Its plenty good enough. Allocate 128 MB for it.

Use an external AV receiver which won't cost much more than the sound card. It will be more fully refined and LMCE can control it. One with a serial interface is the best option for the best control.

Thanks for the info. I have made the changes. What do you think of a Denon AVR2307CI 7.1 Ch. Home Theater Receiver? That sound card was going for $49.99 on newegg. Could you tell me where i can find a cheap av receiver that has a serial interface. i was looking on the internet and can't find any that are below $300 that has all the inputs and stuff on it. That's when i started looking on ebay and found that denon for around $519. Thanks again for the reply.
