Installation issues / Re: Geforce 6600 GT

OK...I'll try your method...couple questionw though..

1) The NVIDIA driver install wants the system to be a RunLevel 3. So between your steps 2 and 3...I should type telinit 3.  I'm also assuming that after doing the telinit...the system will not automatically send me to the ubuntu login screen.
2) If all goes well with your procedure....will I need to modify any system files to get ubuntu to use the NVidia driver? For Example the xorg.conf.

1) press ctrl+alt+F1 (this brings you the text-based login outside the X)
2) command "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop" if you use ubuntu, and "sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop" if you use kubuntu
3) now you have no X running and can install the Nvidia-drivers by commanding "sudo sh NVIDIA..." completing the package name which you are installing

Here is this the procedure I ran...and what happened:

1. Boot Machine and log into Ubuntu .. X Windows [OK]
2. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace                                      [Screen went blank for about 3-4 seconds, then went back to X Windows login]
3. Shoud now be at a console window                 [Did not get to this step]
4. sudo su                                                      [Did not get to this step]
5. Install Nvidia driver                                       [Did not get to this step]

Also tried this:

1. Boot Machine and log into Ubuntu .. X Windows [OK]
2. Ctrl+Alt+F11                                               [Screen went console type window]
3. Logged in using my account and password        [OK]
3. changed directory to Desktop                         [OK]
5. su           [OK]
6. System said cannot do...because X Server was running.
7. Types Killall xinit
8. System said No processes killed.

So far the only way I was even close to installing the NVidia driver was using the Envy script. Of course that complained too about not being at run level 3. I installed it anyway...I was just unable to get the driver to be used.

Installation issues / Re: Geforce 6600 GT
« on: April 04, 2007, 08:04:53 pm » is what I did:

1. Boot Machine into maintenance mode
2. Telinit 3...which then brings up the Unbuntu login screen.
3. I login to unbuntu ...then do the ctrl+alt+backspace.
4. Sometimes I get just a blank screen...sometimes I get a maintenace screen that I can login to.
5. when I shoots me back to the Unbuntu X login screen.

I thought it should log me in and keep me in the maintenace at RunLevel 3. The I could go to the Desktop and run the Nvidia install.

What am I doing wrong???

Did not work for me. I followed the directions on modifying the Cards file. No problem.

The /etc/X11/xorg.conf.pluto file.  Under the "Monitor" section there will be any entry like this:
Option          "IgnoreEDID"   "true"

I did not have the above entry to modify. The was one called UseEDID...which was set to false.

My system still boots into Unbunto..and I can not set the resolution to anything other thant 640x480.  I thinking that the install of the Nvidia 9755 driver must have not worked.  When I originally installed the driver it warned me that I was at run level 1...and should be at run level 3.  Telinit 3 does not work because it boots you into Unbuntu. When I figure out how to install the Nvidia driver without any RunLevel warnings...maybe I can get this to work.

I tried the above procedure...and it did not work for me.  I think it does not work because the Nvidia install 9755 install may not have worked.  Originally the only way I could get the NVidia driver to install was to run it in maintenance mode RunLevel 1. The install warned me that it should be done in RunLevel 3. Here's the problem...I cannot run in RunLevel 3 because a telinit 3 will boot me to the Unbuntu GUI. I would like to set the RunLevel to 3 in maintenance mode without the system booting me into Unbuntu. I believe if I can get into RunLevel 3 and then install the should go well. Then I should be able to follow the procedure descibed in this thread and finally boot into Unbuntu, goto the Screen Resolution and set it to something other that 640x480. Then I will install the LinuxMCE.

My main question here is how to boot into maintenance mode and set the RunLevel to 3.

Note: Telinit 3 ...does not work.
There is no inittab file to change.

Has anyone got the Geforce 6600 GT video card to work in Ubuntu/Linux MCE? If so, what driver did you use? Did you have to do anything special to get it to work?

How do you modify the cards file? I don't have the right permissions. I'm a Linux newbe...and I'm trying to get my Geforce 6600 Gt driver to work.

Installation issues / Configuring screen resolution
« on: April 01, 2007, 07:36:29 pm »
System specifications:

   Panasoinc 42 inch (720P or 1080i) capability
Abit Kv7 motherboard with Geforce 6600GT video card
My computer is connected to the TV with a DVI cable...pretty basic. Therefore, I should be able to set the screen resolution to 16:9 720P. Here's the problem...when I set the screen resolution to 720P through the wizard or through the Media driector...I cannot get everything to fit on my screen. When I use the arrow keys to align ..I can get the top/bottom correct, but then the left/right are way off screen. If I get the left/right correct, then the top is well below the top and the bottom is weel above the bottom.

Does this mean that the video driver I installed for my Geforce 6600 GT is not working right? I installed the driver off of the NVidia web site. I used the envy install/script to install the driver. Being that I'm a Linux Newbe...I'm not totally sure that it installed without any problems?? All I know is that it appeared to install correct and I get an NVIDIA option on Ubunto. Although it does not let me do let me set the screen resolution in Unbuntu. I would expect that I could set the screen resolution to something other than 640x480 in Unbuntu.

Any suggestions on how to verify the correct installation of the video driver?

Also, when I run through the LMCE setup wizard..why does it not detect that my computer is connected to my TV via the DVI connection?

Thanks...I'll give that it try tonight.

Question - Do I need to pre-install (before LMCE) all the Linux drivers for my PVRs? I have 2 PVRs in my system - Hauppauge 250MCE and the ATI HDTV Wonder.

How do I reload my nVidia drivers? When I boot the machine all I get is a Dark Screen. Also, I choose the install option to boot LMCE directly...  So I guess I would then you will need to access the LCME/pluto admin page from another machine on my network.  Which again...I don't know how to do that.

On another note...when I installed the LMCE I choose to not make it a DHCP server.  I'm not sure if that is required in order to access the LMCE machine from another computer on the network??

Your probably right about the video output not being setup correctly. Before I installed the LMCE, the resolution was set to 640x480. I tried to change it in unbutu to a higher resolution...but the system would not let me ??? I tried to use the Screen Resolution option through the menu. Could it be that umbutu does not recgonize my Geforce 6600 GT video card?

I think I will start over and see if I can change the resolution before I install the LMCE. Plus I will install it so the I can launch the LMCE from unbutu.

Note: I'm a newbe to the Linux world...hope you don't have to be some kind of Linux expert to get the LMCE to work.
