Users / Replacing a network card
« on: December 10, 2011, 04:43:39 pm »
My network card (Rosewill RC-401-EX Network Card Gigabit Low Profile 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI-Express 1 x RJ45) died this past week after two years of use so I bought a new network card with a higher user rating (Intel EXPI9301CT Desktop Adapter Gigabit CT 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI-Express 1 x RJ45) and attempted to install it.

The new card had no device drivers installed by default so I grabbed them from Intel and built and installed them per their directions.

Even though I had removed the defective network card, the 8.10 LinuxMCE system was still attempting to use it and it ignored my new card. I eventually tracked down this entry and updated my /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file to eliminate the removed card and to provide the new card a the old card's name. My system then worked as expected again.

I was just hoping that a reboot after getting the new card installed with its device driver would be sufficient to get things functioning. Was there a more appropriate way for dealing with this situation?

Users / How to disable jumping to live TV when starting mythtv frontend
« on: November 19, 2010, 01:52:09 pm »
How does one disable jumping to live TV when the MythTV frontend is started? It doesn't appear to be MythTV related because I couldn't find a setting for it and my frontend running on my notebook doesn't default to that behavior.

I just about never watch live TV so this behavior is extremely annoying especially if I'm recording a sporting event and it jumps to it so now I know the score.

Users / Flickr: unable to delete pictures
« on: November 08, 2010, 04:56:48 pm »
When I attempt to delete a Flickr picture by selecting it and then pressing the delete button, the picture does not go away.

I found the following entry in the DCERouter.log after trying to delete a picture:
Code: [Select]

/home/flickr and all of its subdirectories and files have root for both owner and group permissions. Should the owner and group permissions be something else or should the program doing the deletion have elevated permissions?

The "So Much Trouble" picture needs to go away before the gals in the house skin me alive.

Per, I have been trying to get my LG TV to PNP with linuxMCE and after further searching I found the following entry in /var/log/pluto/Spawn_cdc_4016.log: "Problem installing pluto-generic-serial-device (100)."

I attempted to perform the installation from the command line but it failed as well.

Installation issues / 8.10 Installation Experience for hybrid
« on: October 20, 2010, 11:06:53 pm »
I performed an Internet installation on October 6, 2010 using new-installer-latest.tar.gz per (Actually I installed multiple times because of problems that I encountered.)

My previously installed version was experiencing a number of issues in addition to still wanting to use avenard repo so I decided to reinstall from scratch.  FYI: The issues that I was experiencing vanished after the re-installation.

The reason that I had to reinstall the new version multiple times is because the internal data drives wanted to be configured while in the middle of going through the Setup process. Usually I was specifying the room names at the time at which point the Setup would jump forward in the Setup to configuring the AV equipment so I couldn't complete specifying the room names and every thing else associated with that setup screen (e.g. HDHomeRun). After reading through various forum postings I concluded that I needed to disconnect the internal drives to complete the setup successfully. I disconnected the power to my three internal data drives, reinstalled from scratch, and then I was able to successfully complete the Setup process. My RECOMMENDATION would be to disable the drive configuration until after the Setup process has been completed.

Other issues encountered:

1. After confirming all of the Video and Audio settings the mouse pointer ends up in the middle of the screen. This causes the text that appears in the middle of the screen to vanish immediately after it is displayed. I moved the pointer off the middle and then the text remained so I could see the installation comments as they appeared. I noticed the same behavior when the machine is booting up. Maybe the mouse pointer can be moved to the upper left corner rather than the center of the display.

2. I was unable to press "model isn't on the list" when specifying a Pioneer receiver. The button failed to respond to the button press. Seemed like a defect.

3. Specifying SchedulesDirect information during the Setup process failed to get properly recorded with the LMCE-default video source. I had to specify it again when configuring the MythTV backend.  Seemed like a defect.

4. The MythTV frontend was unable to delete previously recorded MythTV shows after the re-installation because the files were owned by root instead of mythtv in the PVR directories. I changed the ownership of the files to mythtv and I was able to delete again.  Maybe the drive configuration could confirm that the files have proper permissions when a drive is added. I migrated the recordings per

Other Comments:

1. I had microscopic fonts in KDE so I had to revise per My video card is MSI N210-MD512H GeForce 210 512MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card.

2. I had KDE overscanning which I addressed via;topic=9580.0. Strangely, the version of nvidia-settings that is installed by default does not have the overscanning setting as an option so I downloaded the nvidia-settings associated with 195.36.15 ( and replaced the installed version. Why isn't the proper version of nvidia-settings installed?

I still need to configure my Pioneer receiver as well as my LG TV. Hopefully I will be able to get to them in the coming week or two. I don't think that either are currently supported but similar models are supported.

Users / MythTV vanished
« on: January 29, 2010, 07:37:32 pm »
I installed the latest 810 beta updates and my MythTV vanished!  Apparently it was removed. Is there something I need to do to get it back or do I just need to wait patiently for a future update to restore it?

Thanks, Tom

Users / How does one play a playlist?
« on: January 19, 2010, 12:26:45 am »
I created a playlist from from the admin site to contain a few songs but I'm clueless as to how one gets the list to play.  I figured that there would be something under the Audio section of the UI but I have been unable to find anything and searching hasn't turned up directions either.

I'm running the 810 beta.

I have a bunch of complaints about the user friendliness of the system but since I didn't use the previous released system I don't know if they are related to 810 not being complete or if LinuxMCE just isn't very user friendly.  An example would be adding several Genres to a movie. They have to be specified one at a time instead of being able to select them all at once. So I had to scroll down the screen to get to the add capability, select Genre, scroll back down the screen so that one can be selected and added. Repeat for each Genre that had to be added.

Thanks, Tom

Users / Screen blanking during playback
« on: December 29, 2009, 05:53:37 pm »
I running 8.10 beta2 and the screen goes blank about every 15 minutes when playing back recorded shows (either from myth or ripped DVDs). Is there a way to disable this "feature?"

Users / How to specify 1080i from Resulutions Settings Screen?
« on: December 11, 2009, 09:28:12 pm »
I'm run 810beta2 from DVD and I have decided to try hooking things up to my TV and Amp.  My TV supports 480p and 1080i. I can get 480p to work fine but I can't find any setting for 1080i just 1080p.  I tried using '9' during startup and that got me to the AV screen but from there I could not find the 1080i setting.

Does it exist?

Thanks, Tom

Users / Nothing came up on my monitor
« on: December 03, 2009, 11:01:10 pm »
According to this page,, I can select 1, 2, etc to try the various connectors. What is strange is that I have my monitor connected to the VGA output. 1 doesn't work, 2 doesn't work, but 3 does work but according to the noted web page 3 is for 'Component' but I'm using VGA.  Is it possible that the web page is wrong and 3 really means VGA2?  Selecting VGA2 from the AVWizard works but selecting VGA does not.
