Users / News: from the Alpha to the Omega
« on: March 12, 2012, 07:36:20 pm »
Dear LinuxMCE community,

Do not worry, we will not take it to Omega, but let's focus just on going to Beta. The LinuxMCE 1004 Beta that is. Not forgetting there also real Beta's to be plucked, ready to be taken from the dev-tree.
Golgoj4 has one, he has given us the Android Qorbiter Beta.
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Android_Orbiter
And he even thanks us for testing it, how modest.
http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php/topic,12448.0.html

But back to the Linuxmce 1004 Beta. It isn't there yet, but very big steps are taken by l3mce, he has reopened "the snapshot factory" so we can test the snapshot on a regular interval.
We have updated snapshot overview, for your user, and testing convenience.
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Snapshot_overview
This will take the development for the 1004 Beta to the next level, we can find a workflow to test snapshots and report in the wiki and svn, like we did with 0810 snapshots.

Users / News: Happy new year
« on: December 31, 2011, 06:37:43 pm »
Dear LinuxMCE community,

This is it, time to leave 2011 behind us.

It was a year we lost friends, a year we gained friends, a year we disappointed ourselves, a year we amazed ourselves, the year we released LinuxMCE 0810.
It is all in the past nothing we can do nothing about it anymore.

But the future is still in our hands? So let's focus on 2012. Want do we want? Where do we want to go?
Post your 3 LinuxMCE wishes for 2012 below, and maybe they become true.

Do you want LinuxMCE to have a Fremen translation, you fancy LinuxMCE in pink, you want LinuxMCE to control your life?
There is no right and wrong.

To conclude this message there is only one last thing to say

The LinuxMCE team wishes you a happy and productive 2012, and we would like to thank everybody who has been contributing and using LinuxMCE.

Users / Core for Bongo
« on: October 16, 2011, 10:36:07 am »
Since I now have a steady "cashflow in", to match my increasing "cashflow out" for now, I finally want to take the leap and use Linuxmce.
In this case LinuxMCE 10.04 or 12.04, so I can test in real life for the devs.

Lolwut? Bongo isn't using Linuxmce?
No, but now I am willing to take the leap.
But still I have some questions.

Television
I want three tuners.
  • Tuner 1 dedicated to television 1
  • Tuner 2 dedicated to television 2
  • Tuner 3 dedicated to recording

Good approach? Stupid Approach?

Sound
I like the squeezeslave approach, except it seems that Logitech has EOLed the receiver. Also it needs an Amplifier.
My first take was to get network cable to all the audio zones in my house and plug in a logitech receiver, hook that up to a small (car or other) amp, and hook up 2 loudspeakers to the amp.
I wanted to have 5 audio zones, so 5 receivers, 5 amps, 10 loudspeakers.
Since logitech doesn't provide them anymore I think this approach will not work.
Is there a product that can replace the logitech receiver?

Or there is also another approach, that for every audio zone I install a soundcard, get a loudspeaker cable to all the audio zones. But I have no clue if that will work with 5 audio zones, do I have to really put in 5 cards? Are there even motherboards that can provide so many slots, 3 + 5 =8.

What I prefer is to put everything in the casing of my core. No external usb boxes plugged into my core. It always look messy and prone to be destroyed by clumsy girlfriends.
Also I want all the receiver and amp's small, so I can hide them in the ceiling.

Some input is very much appreciated

Thanks

B.

Wiki / Task | Frequently used commands
« on: September 22, 2011, 02:40:26 am »
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Draft_Frequently_used_Command

I am trying to make a list of frequently used commands.
Please add yours, and do not mind the poor layout.

I am not sure if this page is just going to be a list with a short description, or a full summary of all, somewhat similar to
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Linux_commands
I could rewrite both or keep them seperate.

It could be part of the self help manual of linuxmce.

Users / News: Linuxmce 0810 Final is released
« on: September 12, 2011, 08:07:53 am »
Dear LinuxMCE community,

Open up some champagne because have we got some news for you!

We proudly want to bring you the following:

On 09-10-11 at 20:19 the LinuxMCE-8.10-final.iso was born.
She weighs about 3.3 gb and you can download her by clicking the following link:
http://linuxmce.iptp.org/release/LinuxMCE-8.10-final.iso

Of course we want to thank and congratulate everybody involved, the developers for getting it released and the community for helping to sift out the last bugs.

Thank you very much!

When you finished your glass let's get down back to business.

Where do we go from here?

Can I still report bugs for 0810?
Please, report bugs for 0810, so we can maintain it.

What will the next version be based on?
We are working hard on the beta of LinuxMCE 1004

Will there be an upgrade from 0810 to 1004?
It has been done, but not been documented. If you want to help and try to write a wiki about it, please do.
Please ask for guidance in the forum and irc.

What other news have you got?
Well we can report that golgoj4 & friends have been working fanatically on a new orbiter based on QT.
http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php/topic,11776.0.html
Please check out his youtube video in the forum post to be dazzled

Also a wiki workgroup has been founded, to re-invent our linuxmce wiki
This workgroup is mainly for people who want to contribute but do not have the development skills, but have some common sense to help us re-organise the wiki.
Check their forum post here:
http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php/topic,11909.0.html

p.s.
Sorry for waiting 2 days to bring you this news, but I was away for business. Poor excuse and I will punish myself for it. But maybe this news can help you get rid of these Monday Morning Blues.

Wiki / Task | Standard template linuxmce wiki | reqruiting / assessing

We need a standard template and a standard approach how to make a wiki page.
Needs research and input.

Wiki / Task | Identify structure of wiki | reqruiting / assessing
« on: August 28, 2011, 02:38:09 pm »
Is there any easy way to produce/view a hierarchical list of how the wiki is currently laid out? Or just a list of pages showing how the categories are organised? Just from the point of view of working out what needs doing and where.

Possy told me that the following page could give you somewhat of a hierarchy
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Special:SpecialPages

Talking with Purps in a different topic about researching the structure of the wiki.
It is very important to understand how the linuxmce wiki is organized. I know that a lot of articles are inherited from Pluto. This makes information sometimes out of date, not catogorised properly, in the end it doesn't help to have a clear wiki.

After identifying the problems a task more further down the road woudl be to unify or standardize the pages
a helpfull link provided by Purps.

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MythTV:Manual_of_Style

This will be a complex task and will take longer to complete.

Please tell us, it is better to know than to wait for nothing to happen.

It is better that we discuss here about general topics and distillate tasks here.
We will leave the post with topic "Workgroup Wiki/Manual " in the user-channel for recruiting purposes.

I have made a placeholder for our group in the wiki

Wiki / Task | Frontpage wiki | assessing
« on: August 27, 2011, 06:43:14 am »
Check http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php/topic,11897.0.html for this topic rules

Let's make a little task about the wiki frontpage.
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Main_Page

In my opinion it doesn't make sense to have 9 people working on this.
I would like to make max two people responsible for this refresh task, and maintaining this page
It is is a fairly little task, but very important that is why I still would prefer two, so if one is on holidays the other can maintain it.
Of course input from the people who are in the wiki task force is always welcome.

Introduction
I think it doesn't make sense to elaborate a lot about what linuxmce can do on that frontpage, that is what linuxmce.org is for.
I think the support section and the introduction section could easily merge, and could be on top of the page.
Download
Needs update
Project news
could maybe point to the website or be discarded totally, so maybe merge wiki and project news
Photo's on the right
doesn't add to the wiki/support frontpage. Could be in the article of the ui's. We do not need to "sell" Linuxmce in the wiki, that is not what a wiki is for
Documentation Access / User Setups
It is just floating around.
Dev Section
Equally important if not more important as support / introduction, I would like to see it more on the top
Or left Support/Introduction Icons and on the Right the Dev icons.

Equally important as redoing this wiki frontpage is maitaining it!
Please give me your input.

Users / Workgroup Wiki/Manual
« on: August 24, 2011, 07:27:26 pm »
Reacting will result in that you commit to these rules and that you will do effort for this project, unless you already proved your commitment to LinuxMCE

This is an attempt to create a structured workgroup to establish the following:

What
  • What the workgroup will be about
  • re-doing the manual?
  • re-organise the wiki?
  • maintaining the wiki!/manual

Who
People who cannot code, but want to help
People with common sense
People with endurance (deadlines will be made and kept)
People with team spirit

Why
It is needed, but it is not possible to let this be done by one person, or persons who do not commit themselves to the task.
Experience tells me, a lot is said, and done for 2 - 3 months and the initiator flies away. I want to prevent this. That is why we need a team.

What not
People who think they can influence the direction of the Dev's
People who think they gain power and influence doing this
People who do not listen
People who think that managers are the greatest asset to a company (they are not, I know, I am a manager)
People who think that tedious jobs will be done by others

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Ok I am going to something evil and wrong here, just like Napoleon.
But I am going to crown myself manager of this project

Not because I need the extra work, or I want to hostage LinuxMCE, but I think it is needed for this type of project.
Later we can decide otherwise.

Reacting will result in that you commit to these rules and that you will do effort for this project, unless you already proved your commitment to LinuxMCE

If you mingle in the discussion you will are a participant of the project, let's put the money where the mouth is.
Blurting out ideas is not what I am seeking. Open to suggestions of course.

Reacting will result in that you commit to these rules and that you will do effort for this project, unless you already proved your commitment to LinuxMCE
