Installation issues / please help with my database problem
« on: September 30, 2009, 03:02:47 pm »
Good Evening

i have a database problem with my Mythbunutu 9.04 machine.  Yes i do realise that this is not a LinuxMCE machine but I am hoping someone might be able to assist as I have been trying to get help for this problem for some monts now without much luck and I am desperate for help from anyone.  I have already tried the mythtalk and mythbuntu and other forums for assistance.

I am running Mythbuntu 9.04 with the frontend and backend on a standalone machine
I have a problem with my DataBase (I think) not filling.

When I run Utilities/Setup => Video Manager or Music Tools => Scan For New Music, nothing is found.

I have checked the linking in the following
Mythfilldatabse Program: /usr/bin/mythfilldatabase
Directories that hold Videos: /var/lib/mythtv/hdd2/videos (second HDD for storing movies)
Music Settings =>General Settings =>Directories to hold Music: /var/lib/mythtv/music

these are all correct for where the actual videos and music are saved. I have also tried a video database fill after copying a couple of file to the var/lib/mythtv/videos (default file path) folders just in case that worked.

When I go Media Library => Watch Videos I can actually see all my videos and play them all without any problems. Unfortunately I cannot say the same for music. This one is causing a fair bit of grief from the wife.

I have everything else working fine.

I have tried the Repair Database in Mythbunutu Control Center. This has not helped.
It seems to me that the databases as not being filled and I am at a loss for what to try to fix this problem. I am down to a doing a clean rebuild but I have invested to many hours getting my HTPC working perfect to jump down this path. I want to fix this problem

I have attached an errorlog (sorry but its in M$ Word format).

Anyone got any ideas what I can try next????
Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Users / pls dont nuke me, I have a question
« on: September 20, 2009, 04:20:49 pm »
Good Eveing

At the risk of being nuked I would like to ask a question relating to the base distro that LinuxMCE is based on.
Please correct me for my misunderstandings and mistake, but in a constructive manner.
I ask this question in the hope of helping the LinuxMCE development team of producing big and better version in as fast a time frame as possible.  i also want to free up the valuable developer tim for developing the really cool, bleeeding edge stuff that you guy do instead of bogging you guys down in the more mundane stuff that has already been completed by others in other distros

Firstly full respect to all that have worked hard to get LinuxMCE to where it is today.

Your try to release a new rev every 12 months.  I feel that this is hard to achieve, due to the size of the development team.
Why not base you rev's on the LTS from the Ubuntu team.  this means a longer 18months between major releases but these are supported but the ubuntu team longer and therefore you have more chance of getting a super stable release over time.
This will allow LinuxMCE to develop a name as a super stable projec that is super reliable (eg Debian distro type respect)

Also
LinuxMCE is based on Kubuntu the KDE version of Ubuntu but doesnt use a huge amount o the KDE desktop features.
LinuxMCE has a small developmen team, when compared to other projects (especially the Ubuntu team).
This help people to understand why LinuxMCE is a couple of releases behind the Kubuntu release version (9.10 very shortly)
LinuxMCE used a fair few components from MythTV, as far as I understand

Is it possible to use the Mythbuntu distro instead of the Kubunt distro.  This would mean that the Ubuntu team has already completed a heap of the MythTv intergration into ubuntu for you guys.  I dont know what percentage this would reduce your work load by but anyamount is more time on the cool features.

Anyone i hope people take this the way it is intended.
As a possitive couple of questions, with the intent to create positive discussion to help the development team.

Anyway here hoping

Users / HOW DO I Equalise volume on all recordings?
« on: May 09, 2009, 01:44:42 pm »
Hello

I have an odd question.  I would like to equalise the volume across all recordings, movies, music.
The reason for this is because I currently have different recording that play at different volumes.  I even have different movies that play at different volumes.  I am not refering to a loud action movie-v- a quiet library scene.  I have one kids movie that I need o set the volume level on the TV to 25 and another kids movie that requires a TV volume level of 58.

I vaguely remember a function in Real Player 10, I think, that equalises the volume of all the music files to be the same.  I would like to try and do this for all my recording so that I can leave the TV volume alone.

This is important as the kids love both movies and they complain because the 'noise is broken' (they are 2 and 3 years old can drive the video but still cannot adjust the TV or HTPC volume)

Users / repopulate video files from HDD
« on: April 15, 2009, 11:57:33 am »
I have a strange problem.

When I add in new video/video series for my kids I used a Windoze program to stripe out all the menus and link all the episodes together.  I havent found a linux app that does as good a job yet, still looking though.

I then just copy/paste from Windoze to my USB drive and then again to my HTPC into the videos folder (MythTV)
This normally works fine, but I have recently noticed a couple of the series are missing.

Is there anyway to ask the frontend to repopulate the video selections after I have added in the new videos?

I am sure that this is just a glitch with my system (I probably should stop playing around with it so much to 'see what happens'

Users / video posters not downloading
« on: March 14, 2009, 03:24:50 pm »
I have an odd problem.
When I rip a new video to my system and then search for the mediapics it finds the IMDB information and pops up the fetching poster for 0268380 (Ice Age).
It then sometimes comes up with an error of 'coverart exists for this file but could not be downloaded before the timeout expired' and sometimes not.
Under the Cover File in the metadata there is 'No cover'.
I do get all the other metadata (director, year, plot, rating, etc)

Any ideas how to fix this one?
Any ideas how to extend the timeout period in the hope of downloading the file?
I have an ADSL2 connection (approx (>100kBps of actual download speed with a 8MBps connection speed) so it should be able to download the file pretty quickly at my end.

Users / Trying to add in a 2nd automount HDD (Hard Drive)
« on: February 24, 2009, 06:48:20 am »
I am trying to add in a 2nd automount HDD
Items in bold are copy/paste from files/terminal/etc

At the bottom is the output from commands I though might help.
     sudo fdisk -l
     sudo blkid
     cat /etc/fstab
     df -h
     id

I am new to Linux and I am trying to setup a HTPC box.
The 2nd HDD is to increase the storage space for movies (1TB HDD).

I have edited the fstab to look like the following, last two line I added in. (The # is to keep it as a comment for the moment until I am sure things are correct)

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# /dev/sda1
UUID=7ddfc935-8b71-41f7-9655-3c6d47860d76 / ext3 errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /dev/sda6
UUID=3f968843-e1e6-43e8-a8ff-de2ca1f4b4f7 /var/lib xfs defaults 0 2
# /dev/sda5
UUID=d4c916b3-0e43-4a4e-b8b6-36abf1afd0f0 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

#/dev/sdb1 LABEL="Movies"
#UUID="882c7288-47f6-4e23-b171-8727e67cfef0 /var/lib xfs defaults 0 2

The idea is to add in /dev/sdb1 to store my movies on. I have mounted in at /var/lib the same as mythtv  automagically did. The same reason for the 'xfs' format.  I will then redirect mythtv to store all video files to /dev/sdb1
Is this the right way to set this up? (location, format type, mount point, etc)

I also have a second problem here.
I want to increase the size of my 'ext3' boot partion to 50GB as it is curently only 11GB and getting full of games.
How do I do this?
In partion editor I cannot change the size of this partion /dev/sda1. I think that I need to unmount all the sda*'s before i can change thier size but i am not sure and I also dont know how to do this as it wont let me unmount anything in /dev/sda.
How do I increase the size of the /dev/sda1 partion?

Cheers

I had to replace my TV tuner card (dont ask it involves a 2 year old and a cup of juice).
I was unable to get another Nove-t-500MCE card so I now have a DViCO FusionHDTV DVB-T Dual Digital Rev2

I looked into the hardware pages on the Wiki and it sent me to an Aussie Uni page with a fix for the rev1 card but not the rev2 card.
More searching sent me to the Ubuntu forums and yahoo a rev2 card patch that is supposed to work great, with step-by-step instruction.
HOWTO: DViCO FusionHDTV DVB-T Dual Digital 4 Rev 1 and Rev2 with remote tutorial
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?s=6562f24c7352fe58328e2345a3c0d3ef&t=616103

I type in first two lines and all seems to works OK
I type in the third line (apt-get install install mercurial build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`) and I get the following error.

root@*****:~#apt-get install install mercurial build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`
Reading package list...Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information...Done
E: Couldn't find package install
root@*****:~#

I tried moving a few spaces around in case I was missing a space or had a space where it wasn't but the same error always comes back

Anyone have any idea what i am doing wrong?

Users / Move DVD from windows to LinuxMCE
« on: January 17, 2009, 05:52:15 am »
I have my LinuxMCE hybrid up and running without any problem (touch wood it stays that way).
I have two harddrives 1st for application + music, 2nd for video.
I currently have all the kids DVd and videos stored on my Wuindows machine approxs 120 or about 500GB worth.  (Yes the kids are spoilt)

Simple question hopefully.
How can I transfer from windows (NTFS) 500GB hard drive to LinuxMCE 1TB hard drive?
I would prefer not to have to get all the orginals out and rip them again as that will take forever with mesitting at the computer.
I have a 250GB & 500GB USB postable, as well as a 8GB USB stick that i can use, and I am planning on transfering the Window 500GB harddrive to the LinuxMCE in the end so moving it over is not an issue.

Installation issues / Please check New hybrid spec's
« on: January 14, 2009, 12:12:26 pm »
Hello community

As a noob I am ordering a new PC to make into a Hybrid.  My idea is to ask now if anyone can see hardware spec problems so as to try and avoid any 'issue' later (good planning).  I would like to use a newer Graphic Card but I am unsure of what to use and the highest power card that will not be a huge effort to get up and running.
I am happy to fix bugs and stuff if there is an idiot guide (step by step) for me to follow but I would prefer not to have to fix a new bug.
Also do you think that is a good Mainboard or would you recommend a Asus board of some type as these seem to be more supported.

This is the system specs are (including everything) as bleow

Gigabyte Mainboard GA-EG43M-S2H - Intel G43,ICH10,Socket 775,1-PCI-Ex1,1-PCI-Ex16 slot,Micro ATX,4-DDR2 Dual-CH/H D Audio,1394,GbE LAN,6-SATA 3Gb/s,12-USB2.0, HDMI [GA-EG43M-S2H]

Users / Network Security upgrades
« on: January 14, 2009, 06:47:24 am »
I am a bit of a newbie to Linux in general and LMCE.  I have put in the order for a new computer to install LMCE onto and start playing with it.
I am going to attempt to set the system up as my connection to the www, and use it as a bit of a server for my other computer to access the www through.

What is the go with network (www) security.  Does LMCE have all the good apps to protect my system and the data stored on it or do I need to install other apps to protect my systems.
If yes what apps would you recommend?

Users / How new a navidia graphic card can I use
« on: January 10, 2009, 07:18:19 am »
I am getting quote for a new Hybrid PC.  How new a navidia graphics card can I use.  I would like to use a 9500GT and I see the driver is available on the navidia website but can I use it with LinuxMCe is my question.
I realise that not all card have been tested and I am happy to be the test crash dummy if noone has ever used this new a card.  I am more looking for the 'no way on this planet will a card that new work with LinuxMCE' type response.  If you think it is possible with some 'tweeking' then I will try one.

cheers
