Installation issues / Diskless MD - Xine not playing - Any advice?
« on: April 17, 2010, 11:40:44 pm »
Hi everyone,

Due to my own mistakes I had to setup LMCE completely from start.
I previously had my Revo R3600 running as a diskless MD.

In the new installation, the Revo works fine so it seems.
Unfortunately, when I try to play some media, Xine seems to die..

Any pointers at how to remedy / debug this situation?

Here's my log:

--------------------ORIGINAL MESSAGE------------------------------------------------------------
Hi everyone,

This week my core was sadly borked :-(
What happened? As with good testing practises, my core stood with its case open. Particular about this case, is it has room for 6 hd's, and has a really easy slide no screw fixing mechanism. Unfortunately this means that cabling sits at the side of the case, yes, the open side.. And then, the keyboard, laying on top of the case dropped while cleaning. In it's way it ripped of the IDE data cable of the core's hd.
After reattaching, all seemed to work well, but much less was true...
Long story short, I think my databases got screwed, so in order to be up and running again quickly, I just threw in another hd and reinstalled using the webinstaller.

So far so good.
Now before all this I had my Acer Revo 3600 running smoothly as a Media Director.
Now what's the problem you'll aks? You need to know that I'm running 2.6.28-11 (in order for my HVR-4000 to work well)

Well, I let the Revo PXE boot, next I copied over the necessary kernel boot images, and modules (as per the upgrade your kernel article on the wiki) and reboot the Revo.
Now it always hangs at ath_pci blah blah -> IRQ19. See screenshot attached.

I've tried disabling acpi in the bios to no avail. I find some notes on the web about problems with the Revo's wireless, but have not used this at all, neither were these problems present before.

What could I do to get past this booting problem?

Thanks for your precious help!

Users / How "Media" are treated - FRESHUP NEEDED?
« on: February 14, 2010, 01:59:20 pm »
Hi folks,

I'm in need of PROPER information as to how LinuxMCE treats media that it found.
I've been using 0710 previously, but, as I had my media library all messed up, I just abandoned the nice stuff it can really do - and lived with the mess I made.... primarily focusing on getting other technical aspects right.

Today I find myself with an all new and well functioning 0810 core/hybrid and wish to set up my media right.

Now my question:
LinuxMCE finds and recognizes media fine allright.
But is LinuxMCE supposed to go out and fetch Amazon or imdb information all on its own?
Or is it the users' task to go into LinuxMCE-admin (pluto-admin) browse to  Files & Media -> Media Files Sync and from there choose the specific media and use Get Metadata to find and append media info?

I realize this is basic information, but I have difficulty in finding real specific answers amongst the huge number of items being written /discussed about "media"

Thanks for replying!

P.S. I have looked at Thom's screencast part 1, is there any general need for part 2?
If yes, I'm willing to take up the challenge, after having set up a draft outline what will be in it, and have this approved.

Users / Phones log - Where to find information?
« on: February 13, 2010, 12:27:04 pm »
Hi folks,

I'm toying around with some voip phones and am running into some issues.
e.g. I have a Snom 370 that has been working fine for a while, then all of a sudden, it starts asking for a password, allthough it has been set before...

Now where can I find a log for a phone?
I've been looking into /var/log/pluto, looking for some log with the device number in it, and also for an IP# related log, or even a MAC# related log, but it seems not to be there....

Also in LMCE-admin (Pluto admin) entering into the device -> advanced -> Log it shows me what the log should be named like, but it's not there.

Where and how do I enable these logs?

Thanks for helping out!

Users / Cisco 7970 - missing term70.default.loads file?
« on: January 30, 2010, 07:04:22 pm »
Hi all,

I'm having a problem with a 7970. I bought this phone to extend test purposes, but have never really used it much.
This particular phone has been part off a 0710 installation. As far as I remember there were no specific issues.

As I'm setting up 0810 and expanding, thought I'd reconnect the 7970. It would not trigger a 'new' device detection on the core.
So I did a search on how to hard reset a 7970, found the procedure and followed it through.

I'm not sure what is wrong, did I interrupt the hard-reset procedure too early or what, I don't really know.
I'v tried to delete the phone  a couple of times via lmce-admin page, and have it recreated but to no avail.

Now the phone keeps recycling, and throws a couple of quick errors on the screen after recycling.

Followed through on the 7970 wiki page, and went for tcpdump to try and see what's happening:
It seems the phone tries to load term70.default.loads, but this file is not on the core.

I'm looking for help on this one, I have no experience with cisco, and their docs seems so vast I wouldn't know where to start..

Users / mkv video - How to switch audio streams?
« on: January 29, 2010, 07:50:08 pm »
Hi all,

I have an video.mkv file containing multiple audio streams (French, English etc.)
LMCE starts to play the French stream.
When I use VLC to test, (XP) I can choose which audio stream to play.

Is there a way to select the available audio streams in Xine?
Am I missing something obvious here?

Thanks for your help!

Users / Taking up Media Director again - Can't execute MythTV_Player
« on: January 22, 2010, 11:33:19 am »
Hi everyone,

Short intro:
It's been quite a while since I have been working / setting up MD's.
In my first 0704 / 0710 install, I had a couple and each of them had a PVR-150 on board. Taking into account that at that time my knowledge (if any) of MythTV was not very impressive, I today stumble over some basic questions, so her goes:

0810 beta2 on Asus M3N78-EM
1 Hauppauge HVR-4000
RS232 to Onkyo Receiver

Acer Aspire Revo R3600
no TV card or USB TV device

It should be noted that I have had an extreme 'fight' to get the HVR4000 running first with Myth 021 now with 022.
To get this to work, I had to do extensive testing, during which, admittedly, from time to time some detail on information got lost, or mixed up with 'another trial'.
It's also important to notice that I'm running 2.6.28-11-generic kernel.

So yesterday picked up the R3600 and hooked it up as an MD. At first, after enabling PXE, the MD got stuck after a reboot. Then I realized maybe this had to do with me running a 2.6.28-11 kernel on the core?
I adapted the boot images of my MD, and also copied over the complete relevant modules directory.
I also switched AMD64 to i386 via PlutoAdmin.
After that, the Revo continued booting and seems to work fine...

Next I tried to start TV on the Revo-MD.
This does not work...
At this point I started doubting: does my MD need it's own TV tuner? I don't think so, the front-end of the MD should be able to connect to the back-end on the core, and use the HVR-4000 tuner on the core - if it is available. (Could someone please confirm if I'm correct here?)

Next I had a look at the ##_MythTV_Player.log to find:
Code: [Select]
sambahelper@moon41:/var/log/pluto$ cat 49_MythTV_Player.log
1       01/21/10 19:36:38 49 (spawning-device)    18861 Dev: 49; Already Running list: 42,43,45,
1       01/21/10 19:36:39 49 (spawning-device)    device: 49 ip: cmd_line: MythTV_Player
3       01/21/10 19:36:40 49 (spawning-device)    Can't execute MythTV_Player

Now I wonder:
- Is this caused by the changed kernel?
- Are there 'known' objections against upgrading the kernel?
- What steps do I have to take to modify the MD image, so that newly created MD's will use the correct kernel and modules?
- What is missing to make MythTV run on this MD?

I realize this is quite a lengthy post, but I feel the information is necessary to understand the situation.

Thanks a lot for all the great work and for your help!

Users / RS232 - route commands from Core to GSD - HOWTO LINK?
« on: January 15, 2010, 01:46:10 pm »
Hi all,

Trying to control my AV Receiver (Onkyo) using RS232. Using a straight through cable.
I have added a device AV Equipment (AVC-A1SRA RS232) (Device #37, Device Template #71, controlled by: CORE)
Automatically I get a Generic Serial Device with the same settings.
I also adjusted Com Port Paritybit/stop to reflect N81
I also adjusted Plug & Play detection script to use but this does not seem to work...

When I send a command to #37 like this: /usr/pluto/bin/MessageSend dcerouter 0 37 1 192
the receiver responds correctly. So we know RS232 communication is working.

When I try to send a command using the test buttons  next to the codes from the AV Equipment, A/V Properties screen,  a popup says the command has been sent to #1 but nothing happens.
In DCErouter.log I find this:
Code: [Select]
08      01/15/10 13:24:14.549           Received Message from 0 (unknown / ) to 1 (CORE / Bureau), type 1 id 191 Command:Send Code, retry none, parameters: <0x735cbb90>

07      01/15/10 13:25:43.040           Event #75 has no handlers <0xb1bf6b90>
07      01/15/10 13:25:43.040           Received Message from 18 (Asterisk / Bureau) to -1001 (unknown / ), type 2 id 75 Event:Extensions Status, retry none, parameters: <0xb1bf6b90>
07      01/15/10 13:25:43.040             Parameter 13(Text): SIP/200:Registered <0xb1bf6b90>

My conclusion is that the link to the GSD device is not set up properly.
I see the Core receives the MessageSend, but from 0 Unknown, and it is not rerouted to #37 GSD.

Where did I go wrong here?
What also puzzles me is that in Plutoadmin, switching from the AV Equipment view to
the Generic Serial Devices view, the fields with information about Paritybit/stop and discrete volume seem to be empty, whereas they are not empty, and reappear at other times.
Is it okay for the "This device is controlled via" to show no objects? (see attached screenshot)

I feel I'm very close, but not quite there yet!
Thanks for helping out,

Users / Original PLUTO related documentation - AVAILABLE?
« on: December 24, 2009, 10:16:03 am »
Did a quick search without positive result, as I thought this would have been asked already...

Is, by any chance, any original PLUTO related documentation available somewhere?
I ask this, because I feel there must be a tremendous amount of quasi hidden (or not so clear to me at least...) information available relating to the pluto admin part.
I feel this might greatly improve the understanding of LinuxMCE as a system.

Thanks for your reply.

Users / Combine LMCE with non-LMCE MythTV station?
« on: December 18, 2009, 04:00:32 pm »
Hi all,

Is it possible to combine / connect 0810 LMCE with a non-LMCE machine running MythTV?
In other words, the 'other' MythTV machine would be running e.g. 0904 with MythTV, this would not be a PXE boot MD.
Can LMCE be connected with such a 'stand alone' Myth machine, and have its recordings in it's mythconverg database?

Why would I need this?
At the moment I'm completely stuck because I fail to get my HVR-4000 card to work with either Myth or VDR on 0810 LMCE.
I'd hate to lay aside such a nice dvb card as the HVR-4000.
It is possible to make it work with 0904.
I would then put the HVR-4000 in another machine and configure it to work with LMCE's Myth-backend.

Hope this is doable?

Hi folks,

Following my recent continuing problems to get Myth 0.22 going with my HVR-4000 I setup a new 0810 install with VDR instead of MythTV.

Unfortunately I have no experience whatsoever with VDR.
So all is in place and installed.
Choosing media > TV serves me a NO SIGNAL image.

I have followed the LMCE/VDR wiki page, and had to ad the -f 1 to the scan command in order for SCAN to use the secondary frontend of the HVR-4000.
Code: [Select]
sudo scan -f 1 -o vdr -p -u /usr/share/doc/dvb-utils/examples/scan/dvb-t/be-Schoten > channels.conf
Scanning worked allright, and gave me a nice channels.conf.
I'm not sure where uploading this file using pluto webadmin does put this file, but I found a channels.conf in /var/lib/vdr/channels.conf (owner root) and this was not the channels.conf file that I uploaded.
So, where does the channels.conf file need to go for LMCE?

Next I assume that analogous to MythTV, VDR should somewhere be told to use the correct frontendN of the DVB-T card?
Below is a list of what is in /dev/dvb/adapter0/
Code: [Select]
linuxmce@dcerouter:/dev/dvb/adapter0$ ls -l
total 0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 1 2009-12-18 11:31 demux0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 5 2009-12-18 11:31 demux1
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 2 2009-12-18 11:31 dvr0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 6 2009-12-18 11:31 dvr1
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 0 2009-12-18 11:31 frontend0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 4 2009-12-18 11:31 frontend1
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 3 2009-12-18 11:31 net0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 7 2009-12-18 11:31 net1

Now where do I configure VDR to use frontend1?

I have vdradmin-am up and running.
Is there someplace here to configure dvb card settings?

Thanks a lot for you help!

Installation issues / HVR-4000 - SOLVED
« on: December 10, 2009, 11:16:27 am »
Hi all,

Done some extensive installation testing with this Hauppauge TV card.
My best results are as follows:
- 0810 stock DVD install, all updates installed
- 4vl-dvb with hg clone
- installed Kaffeine

=> Kaffeine will succesfully do channel search and play dvb-t
=> MythTV 0.22 will recognize HVR-4000, will also properly recognize the adapters
Code: [Select]
  [   13.048647] DVB: registering adapter 0 frontend 0 (Conexant CX24116/CX24118)...
   [   13.048939] DVB: registering adapter 0 frontend 1 (Conexant CX22702 DVB-T)...

MythTV is unable to perform a channel scan.

1. Should this be reported into TRAC?
2. Any MythTV guru's that can point me to further Myth command line wizardry to see what's happening?

Hi all,

First off a BIG THANK YOU to all the guys, people, devs that keep making this happen!

A couple of questions / remarks:
DISCLAIMER: these questions / remarks are intended to be positive and helpfull (if not to myself then ... )
They have been gathered and verified over multiple installs.
However, if fellow LinuxMCE users find these to be incorrect please do post your findings.

MAIN QUESTION: How do fellow LinuxMCE users configure MythTV for first time use? (mythtv-setup)

Today, after many, many, many retrials I finally managed to get 0810 beta2 installed on my M3N78-EM (asus) mobo.

  • As each Kubuntu install imperatively creates 'a' first user (I called mine linuxmce :-) )
how does LinuxMCE install treat this user? Or, does LinuxMCE install create a new user to be used in running    LinuxMCE? Why I ask this? During the many installs I went through, each and every time I had to adjust membership of users. If not, mythtv-setup would not run properly.
  • Running mythtv-setup from a terminal shows "kdesu command not found" [kdesudo is found (?)]
  • Running sudo updatedb.conf errors out:
Code: [Select]
updatedb:/etc/updatedb.conf:4: unknown variable `exit'
    A small edit of updatedb.conf solves this.[/li]
  • minor issue: after LinuxMCE install ALT-F2 is broken in KDE

On to LinuxMCE related stuff:
- After entering KDE - How can one properly get back to LinuxMCE Orbiter?
- I've recently learned about /usr/pluto/bin/
How is a user supposed to run mythtv-setup if mythtv-backend can't be stopped without Restart_MythBackend doing its thing?
- In my case, in Belgium, using dvb-t and a Hauppauge HVR-4000 we have to use a workaround to get program information into mythconverg (mc2xml)
- With the new myth 0.22 version, multiple frontends are supported (THANK YOU!!)
However, after killing restart_mythbackend, after stopping myth-backend and entering mythtv-setup, I am
100% able to choose the correct /dev/dvb/adapterN/frontendN. Problem is the adapter is not recognized, so scanning channels is impossible.
- When leaving myth-setup there is a warning like:
Code: [Select]
"Path /home/user_1/data/pvr does not exist" solve? This path off course does exist, but the initial user has no permission...

For testing purposes I installed dvb-utils and a copy of my local be-Schoten file (scan info file)
Scanning proceeds succesfully:
Code: [Select]
  linuxmce@dcerouter:~$ sudo scan -f 1 ~/be-Schoten > channels.conf
   scanning /home/linuxmce/be-Schoten
   using '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend1' and '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0'
