I expect this may be old news, however I didn't see anything about it in the forums. If I search for linuxmce on google:
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=linuxmce

The top link to linuxmce.com has a google warning: This site may be compromised.

Users / HarvestGeek & Ninja Blocks
« on: January 29, 2013, 01:16:25 pm »
Some pretty cool Open Source hardware/software automation projects coming through Kickstarter that may be of interest to some on these forums:

HarvestGeek (Wireless monitoring for Ph, temp, Light Intensity, soil moisture, CO2, EC). Makes me very sad I don't have a garden.. I might have to move now!
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2077260917/harvestgeek-brains-for-your-garden?ref=category

Oh and I realise I am a bit late on the scene, but Ninja Blocks looks pretty cool too! Did anyone get one of these in the first/second rounds?

Hi All,

Thought I would take a stab at 1004 using the awesome new DVD install.

I am using a Shuttle XS35 V2 for one of the MDs. The Netboot won't work OOTB. Adapting this 0810 guide; http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/ShuttleXS35GT allows the MD to boot, however it gets stuck when trying to run depmod:
Quote
WARNING: Couldn't open directory /lib/modules/2.6.32-40-generic: No such file or directory
FATAL: Could not open /lib/modules/2.6.32-40-generic/modules.dep.temp for writing: No such file or directory

I think this is because the core is compiling with:
/lib/modules/2.6.32-40-generic/

However both the MDs I have are using:
/usr/pluto/diskless/lib/modules/2.6.32-41-generic/

I have done an apt-get update/upgrade, and I have used this guide with 0810 before.

Any idea if this mismatch is an issue? Any idea how to resolve it?

Cheers,
WR.

Users / Canonical will not support Kubuntu after 12.04
« on: February 10, 2012, 05:17:30 am »
Not sure what this may mean for LMCE...?

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-devel/2012-February/005782.html

As Jonathan Riddell notes at the end "...I hope and expect Kubuntu can continue..." - so maybe the impact won't be huge long term?

Marketplace / Dianemo S10.10 license for sale
« on: September 27, 2011, 03:52:36 pm »
Hello All,

Disclaimer: I should disclose that I am a little annoyed at Dianemo. They have stopped responding to my emails (15 days without ANY response to 4 emails, and 24 days with no response to a specific request).. I wonder how quickly that will change with this post?. That said, I don't mean to rant (well maybe a little), and I figure some of this info may be useful to others.

Why did I buy Dianemo?
Basically I have had problems with MythTV crashes in the past, and thought I would try and take some of the hassle out of LMCE and try out the Dianemo solution - which as I understood it had a newer version of Myth, and was less buggy.

What I was not aware of is that, while the Dianemo solution claims to be more stable, it has had a bunch of things cut out of the standard LMCE distro that I was not aware of (and that were not disclosed). After highlighting these - I was told they could be 'configured for me' but as you can see from the below - a bunch of them never worked... Including MythTV frontend which was a showstopper.

Things that didn't work out of the box but we got to work eventually

  • Squeezebox server (was not installed on initial install)
  • Mouse pointers - not visible in UI2 (for gyration/mouse navigation on UI2)
  • Temporary License keys incorrect - re issued
  • Permanent License key never issued - box stopped working for a few days
  • Mythweb

Things that never worked (after almost 1 month of requests for support. There was lots of communication to begin - though no progress - but it fell right off in the end)

  • Watching TV (MythTV) via an MD (or hybrid). Backend works (playing TV from the Ubuntu desktop works fine), but the front end crashes after about 20 seconds
  • uPNP (asked for this to be enabled. never was)
  • Gyration 3101 never worked. Apparently this is unsupported. I was advised that they should be able to get this working but it was never fixed (again, repeated requests made)
  • NAS fileshare access (after manually detecting file shares, neither LMCE file structure or 'just make the content public' worked
  • Media tagging (via amazon / imdb). This is flat broken in Dianemo. TVDB also not there of course
  • Media tagging (via the advertised update http://192.168.80.1/mediadb). URL never worked (not found)
  • Denon 4306 AMP. Not detected
  • EEEbox b202 (When I paid for my copy, this was advertised to work - though I was later advised it is no longer supported and it has been removed from the Dianemo thread)

Other considerations
  • Auto-detect is turned off for most things. This is apparently to improve stability, but does mean more manual configuration is required... Assuming you know how, which you probably don't - so you'll have to wait for Dianemo to remote access in
  • Mouse/Cross Hairs cursor must be enabled via config changes - turned off by default. I never got this to work on the MD - on the hybrid only

There was a bunch of other stuff I never tried (USBUIRT, zwave etc) because I never got it to a point where I could use it.

I should also mention that I am currently running the LMCE 0810 Final (not Dianemo) and it has resolved _all_ of the problems listed above... Including MythTV which seems much more stable than I remember from the Beta!  ;D

I think that covers most of it. Andrew has always been very helpful on the forums, but my experience with Dianemo was pretty terrible all said. Curious if anyone else has had issue like this?

Cheers
WR.

Users / FIX: apt-get update / upgrade not upgrading
« on: July 14, 2010, 01:58:07 pm »
FYI - I wasn't able to get any updates of late and didn't know why (using a June Snapshot 0810). Possy pointed out a fix:

/etc/apt/preferences - change Pin-Priority to 500

That will be all ;)

Sounds promising

(PhysOrg.com) -- A new audio/video cable techology is being developed that might spell the end of HDMI cables, which are currently used to connect a wide range of audio and video devices. The new technology is known as HDBaseT and carries audio and video signals and power on standard Cat 5e/6 Ethernet cables.
Quote
HDBaseT is a network-based standard called “5PlayTM” that enables a single cable to carry high definition video, audio, up to 100 watts of power, 100BaseT Ethernet, and control signals simultaneously. The cables, which are inexpensive Cat5e/6 type rather than expensive HDMI, can be up to 100 meters in length. The HDMI  ports are replaced by standard RJ-45 connectors. The HDBaseT specification supports the latest HD video, 3D, and high resolution 2K x 4K (4096 by 2160).

Users / MAME meta data missing and some ROM failing (snapshot)
« on: June 19, 2010, 11:44:08 am »
Heya All,

Noticed since I started using the snapshot from the 1/6/10 that the Mame meta data doesn't seem to work.

Also a few ROM's that previously worked seem to fail (e.g. Street Fighter 2 HF).

I tried removing and adding the Game Player under the software modules in the MD - however I am not really sure what else I can do to troubleshoot?

Any ideas where I can start looking?

Cheers,
WR

Users / Snapshot - 1st June - observations
« on: June 06, 2010, 05:17:56 am »
Hi All,

Some observations re the snapshot from the 1st June 2010.

Not sure if they are known issues or not....

1. Onscreen Keyboard obscures the MythTV Backend setup buttons via Computing

2. Mythtv Backend Setup via Computing will not allow me to add and TV Tuners.

Cards are visible (in the add tuner section) but after clicking Finish – no changes are made (they are not listed in the available tuners section). Maybe a permissions issue?

To fix this I had to go into KDE and run the mythtv backend setup. Once added here they seem to hold and are visible via computing.

3. I have 3 addition HDDs in the hybrid. On one of these it seemed to add a recursive link back to another drive. This caused the media scanning scripts to fail and also left countless duplicate entries for some files. Fix was to simply to run the command: unlink on the symbolic link.

4. (minor) The screen goes into standby (turns blank) when watching MythTV without any peripheral input (comes back on with the touch of the gyro).

5. (minor) General plugin & Mythtv download failed during initial Wizard. After a bit of time these seem to correct themselves (re-installed).

6. (minor) When in KDE Mythtv Backend Setup (because of issue 2) the Hdhome run seems fine, however the other tuner I tried to added (DVICO dual digital 4) I got an error “could not get card info for card '/dev/dvb/adapter0/....' Unknown Error.

In spite of this I was still able to add them. When returning to the mythtv backend setup via computing they appear correctly (and they work).

---
Other than the above, it seems pretty stable so far. Zwave lights, Rs232 denon amp working well. Other media is fine. Now to install mame ;-)

Thanks devs!
WR.

Hi All,

Having a few issues after the 0.23 update - wondering if anyone can help.

I can watch live TV, but only for a minute or two. After that it crashes to the error "video frame buffering failed too many times".

Using a HDhomerun on a Hybrid. Was working fine until the upgrade from 0.22 to 0.23.

I tried deleting and reading the cards, rescanning channels just in case (100% signal btw). Reload/Reboot. No change.

Checked the mythtv backend logs and see this error a lot, assuming it might be the cause?
Code: [Select]
2010-05-28 23:47:02.143 MainServer::HandleVersion - Client speaks protocol version 56 but we speak 50!
Does this means I have some backend/front end mismatch?

I dumped a few more lines in pastebin if this makes sense to anyone:

Any ideas?

WR

Users / Cannot access Internal HDD - permissions problem?
« on: March 29, 2010, 11:09:57 am »
Hi All,

I don't know why but I don't seem to be able to access any of the additional HDD via fileshare. I have recently reinstalled Beta 2 (after screwing up the permissions trying to fix this issues) but I seem to have the same problem. If I navigate to \\192.168.80.1\public\videos I can browse fine - but if I try to click on any of the extra drives from here I get a cannot access error.

I have tried CHMOD 777 and CHOWN root:public (is this what it should be?) on the files and dir struicture - but nothing seems to work. Clearly I don't know what I am doing so any advice would be appreciated!

Here is an example of one of the directories I cannot access:
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root public        33 2010-03-28 23:53 drive4 [33] -> /mnt/device/33/public/data/videos

P.s:
1. Cannot accesss via Ubuntu 9.10 or Windows 7
2. Access to the HDD the 0810 Beta 2 is installed on is fine
3. Am using LMCE dir structure, all Internal HDD are in devices under template Internal HDD #1790
4. I am only trying to access public files in the public directory

WR

Users / HDhomerun - 2 x 1080i streams?
« on: March 08, 2010, 12:04:20 pm »
Hi All HDhomerun users,

Can anyone tell me what the performance is like if you are:
a) trying to record 2 x 1080i streams at once
b) trying to watch 2 x 1080i streams at the same time
c) trying to record 1 and watch 1 1080i stream at the same time

Just having trouble understanding how a 10/100 ethernet connection on the HDhomerun can cope with that bandwidth?

Also does it only record direct to the box, or can you use your mythtv storage groups?

Any insight would be appreciated :-)

Cheers,
WR.

Users / VoIP: Make/receive calls when logged in via external network?
« on: March 01, 2010, 06:54:18 am »
Hey All,

Recently got VoIP configured and working, including using sipdroid on a google nexus one. Works a treat when @ home on the wifi network. Sipdroid also automagically patches outbound calls via SIP when at home (using the defaul phone interface).. very cool (and cheap!).

Today I changed the server settings to use the external domain, not the 192.168.80.1 IP (dyndns) and I was still able to login to the SIP server. My phone rings when connected over 3G when my home SIP number is called, however when I answer it I get dead air and it drops.

Q: Should VoIP work when connected via an external network?

Cheers,
WR

Users / UnRaid working?
« on: February 19, 2010, 03:31:25 am »
Hi All,

I am pretty sure UnRAID is working fine with LMCE from a few posts - just wondering if someone out there can confirm, and maybe add a WIKI Entry?
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Category:Network_Attached_Storage

Anything worth noting about integration? I was going to go FreeNAS/RAID5 but buying a bunch of same sized disks (or losing space) doesn't appeal ;-)

Thx,
WR.
