Users / My LinuxMCE 7.10 experience (so far)
« on: June 04, 2008, 02:53:45 pm »
Hi guys

I have been lurking in the forums for over 6 months now I did successfully have a 7.04 system up and running without too many issues. Went back to Vista and windows Home Server. I recently decided to try out 7.10. The system that I installed it on is as follows:

Case: Antec P180 Silver and black
PSU: Tagan modular 430W
GPU: Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS 320MB - replaced with an NVDIA 720 128mb card
Harddrive 1: WD Raptor 74GB 10000rpm
Harddrive 2: Samsung T133 400GB 7200rpm
RAM: 4GB (4 * 1GB) OCZ-EL-XTC Platinum 4-5-4-15 PC6400
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-965-DQ6
Cooling, 3 * 120mm case fans, fan controller
CPU Cooling: Zalman 9500 copper cooler with fan controller
Optical One: Samsung 18X DVD /-RW/RAM (SH-183A)
Optical Two: LG 18X DVD /-RW/Ram (GSA-H42L)
CPU: Intel E2160 Dual Core Pentium

I used the DVD (RC1) installer and ran into problems with the Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS 320MB, I tried all the suggestions on the forum but gave up in the end. I went to PC World and bought a cheap NVDIA GEFORCE 7200 with 128mb RAM and this works great. AVWizard ran first time and I was able to use UI2 with alpha blending and it looks superb. I went through the set-up without any problems (wish I had all the cool plug and play gear). I still need to setup my receiver, TV and Sky Digital box - another days work!.

My biggest problem initially was how to set the networking side of the system, it took a bit of work and some messing with my cable configuration (I can provide more info if needed) but it is now working correctly and the CORE pc is acting as my DHCP server . I have been able to diskless boot my spare pc and laptop to act as media directors. It is a very powerful system and I love the flickr art (great W.A.F).

I have got a lot of help and inspiration from this forum so thanks to everyone here for the great advice. If you are struggling a bit then keep trying it will be worth it in the end. This is a great system I just need to convice the wife and daughter to use it. The wife is happy with Sky + and gets mad at me when something isnt working because I am tinkering!!!

Users / Adding a Sky + sat box to LMCE
« on: May 16, 2008, 09:46:39 am »
Hi guys

Finally gave in and bought a Geforce 7 card and replaced my Geforce 8800GTS. LMCE installs and works great.

Tried to setup a Sky Digital + box (Amstrad) in the pluto admin site. The box is connected to an ATI Theatre capture card via Svideo.  I added the device and after many hours of trying to sort it out have given up.

Hoping that some user has been able to sucessfully add their sky box to their system and could please give me the required settings. Is there a set of learned IR codes available?

Thanks for any help or info in advance.

Installation issues / Tranquil Harmony Home Server as a Core
« on: April 29, 2008, 09:39:29 am »
Hi

I am currently using a Tranquil Harmony Home Server (http://www.tranquilpc.co.uk/T7.htm) as a Windows Home server which is working great, it is completely quiet and very fast at serving up my media. Would this system be suitable as a Core?

Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.

« on: April 29, 2008, 09:36:03 am »
Hi

I have have used the both the B4 and RC1 DVD installer on my pc to install LinuxMCE. Both installs finished and I restarted the machine but I am unable to access the AVWizard. I get the beebs and choose 1 for DVI and have also tried all the resolution keys but the screen remains blank. I have also tried svideo from the card but still no display.

I read somewhere that their may be issues with the NVDIA 880GTS 320MB Card that I am using.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Users / Squeezebox
« on: July 21, 2007, 10:11:05 pm »
Hi Guys

Installed a 3rd generation Slim Devices Squeezebox on my linuxMCE box last night. The device was found and the software installed. It is showing in the admin site. It is connecting to the DCE Router without any problems but will not show any of the stored content. I checked out the WIKI and it mentioned that if the box was the only audio device in the room it should play what ever was playing via the MD, unfortunatly it isnt playing ball or playing the song!. Have I missed something out? I tried it under windows vista and it worked first time.

Any ideas or help would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Users / Just a mad thought!
« on: July 04, 2007, 10:32:47 am »
While looking at the list of compatable equipment I had a mad thought! If I where to buy the Apex Alarm system in the good ol US of A would it work here in cold and wet Dublin? Obvious power differences aside would it work? Could I finally stop skipping the security aspects of this great system? How I would love to arm my alarm system via LMCE I need to get a life!!

I wonder what compatable equipment that is State side would work here when power issues were sorted?

Thanks for your help and info.

Users / Photos for users
« on: July 04, 2007, 10:17:26 am »
Hi guys

Plugging away at my LMCE system and loving it. This is probably a silly question but I have added photos for the three users that will use the system via the web admin site but so far they have not shown up on any of the screens. I am probably missing something obvious should I be able to see the uploaded photos on the admin web page? I just see a small box with a picture sysmbol?

Thanks

Users / Setting up a voip provider and account.
« on: June 21, 2007, 06:11:11 pm »
Hi guys

I have received the following settings for the Asterisk server as follows. How and where do I enter this information to be able to use the VOIP service via LinuxMCE? Are there any configuration files that I can add the info too or do I need to add this via AMP? Please be as specific as possible as I am a Linux newbie. Thank you so much for all your help.

Blueface.ie settings

SIP
 A typical SIP configuration to utilise Blue Face services from your Asterisk Server:
 sip.conf

[general]

; To recieve incoming calls to a dynamic IP address you need to register with our server.
; If you have a static address do not use this line and instead specify SIP/${EXTEN}@ipaddress:port in the PBX GUI for the numbers you want forwarded.

register => username:password@sip.blueface.ie/1234

; Use the equivalent of the config below to make and receive calls.
[blueface]
type=peer
host=sip.blueface.ie
username=yourusername
fromuser=yourusername
secret=yourpassword
insecure=invite ; Specifies that authentication is not required for incoming INVITEs from sip.blueface.ie.
context=yourcontext

extensions.conf

; Specify the context to receive incoming calls.
[yourcontext]
; Note this is just an example there are infinite different ways to handle the incoming call.
exten => yourusername,1,Wait(1)
exten => yourusername,2,Playback(beep)
exten => yourusername,3,Hangup

[outgoing]
; Dial the Blue Face Speaking Clock.
exten => 303,1,Dial(SIP/303@blueface)
exten => 303,2,Hangup

; Send PSTN calls to Blue Face.
exten => _X.,1,Dial(SIP/${EXTEN}@blueface)
exten => _X.,2,Hangup

 IAX
 A typical IAX configuration to utilise Blue Face services from your Asterisk Server:

iax.conf

[general]

; To recieve incoming calls you need to register with our server.

register => yourusername:yourpassword@iax.blueface.ie

; To receive incoming calls specify this block and replace "yourcontext" for your dial plan.
[yourusername]
type=user
host=iax.blueface.ie
context=yourcontext

; To make outgoing calls specify this block;
[blueface-out]
type=peer
host=iax.blueface.ie
username=yourusername
secret=yourpassword

extensions.conf

; Specify the context to receive incoming calls.
[yourcontext]
; Note this is just an example there are inifinite different ways to handle the incoming call.
exten => yourusername,1,Wait(1)
exten => yourusername,2,Playback(beep)
exten => yourusername,3,Hangup

[outgoing]
; Dial the Blue Face Speaking Clock.
exten => 303,1,Dial(IAX2/blueface-out/303)

Users / The whole networking thingy!
« on: June 21, 2007, 06:03:43 pm »
Hi

I have a lovely LMCE 1.1B install that works and looks great unfortunatly I seem to have messed up my networking and I am in a tizzy!!!! Everthing was going fine until I decided to setup a laptop for "diskless booting" via my hybrid/Core system. I could not get this to work and read about the fact that my wireless router (linksys WTGC54) has a DHCP server so I disabled this. I also swicted the ethernet cables so much going into my PC nothing seems to work I cannot get internet access and my VOIP phone cannot access a server.

Can I please confirm the order of cables. I currently have ethernet throughout the house via cat 5 cable and a switch. I connect my cable modem into an ethernet port in my bedroom and the rest of the equipment is in the attic. I have a cable comming from the switch into the "internet" port of the linksys wireless router and a cable comming from the router into the 2nd ethernet port on my PC I have also connected a cable straight from the switch into the first ethernet port on the PC. I am assuming that the first port is the internal port and the 2nd the external port? (the manual does not tell me - A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard with two ethernet ports on board) As I mentioned previously I have to disable DHCP networking on the router. Is this the correct configuration? I presume that I will need to leave the PC on as it will be acting as a DHCP server to use the VOIP phone etc?

I hope that the above makes sense it does to me I think!

Thanks for any help or information.

Installation issues / LMCE Nvidia Drivers
« on: June 15, 2007, 04:24:02 pm »
I installed LMCE last night and chose the option to install the propritry NVDIA drivers pc rebooted as normal but the desktop returned with its normal resolution, I didnt think much of this and proceeded to install LMCE which went without a hitch.

After setting up the system (UI2 with alpha Blending) the interface is really ugly checked in the web admin and the system is not using the propritry NVDIA drivers. How do I install the correct drivers and keep my desktop resolution (please keepp it simple I am a Linux newbie).

Thanks in advance for your help.

Installation issues / UK & Ireland Users
« on: June 07, 2007, 01:23:30 pm »
Hi

I have setup LinuxMCE and I am very impressed with it so far. Although I have only just started to scratch the surface of the workings of this programme.

After reading the list of compatable equipment I was unable to find most of it available here in Ireland. I was wondering what equipment you guys based in the UK and Ireland are using for home automation (I am using X10 via computer interface), climate control (no idea where to start), telephone system (that is compatable with the Pluto modules), security/alarm system (my alarm system does not have any type of interface), security cameras etc. What multi room audio/video system are you using that is controlled via LinuxMCE?

 My PC does not have any serial ports I am using a usb-rs323 adapter for my x10 module (not sure how to set this up under Linuxmce) Are there any RS232 modules available in Europe?

Is it possible for me to add a VOIP vender and use their system?

Any information or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Paul
