Users / Hardware advice.
« on: September 30, 2012, 09:54:29 pm »
Hi there its been a while since I looked at linuxmce and I am thinking of dipping a toe in the water again and try create a hybrid setup that I can play around with.

I am eventually going to add some of the home automation however I am in the middle of moving so that won't be for a few months.

I'm looking for some advice on hardware and what is the best route. The wiki pages suggest items that appear to be a few years old and I was wondering if they are still relevant?

Is it still a case of linux MCE being 32bit? If so I will leave it at 4 gig memory.

Can anyone recommend a suitable motherboard + CPU + gfx card for a hybrid setup that I may wish to expand in the future perhaps?

The main aim is to use it for media at first then extend to some of the interesting home automation solutions when funds allow :-)

I am really looking forward to adding things to my shopping cart on ebuyer etc! I just want to make sure the pieces I add are hopefully compatible.

Many thanks in advance and keep up the amazing work!

Users / Retrying LinuxMCE
« on: August 16, 2010, 12:20:55 am »
Hi I tried LinuxMCE a while ago and really liked the idea of the project, however I think it was too early for me with my limited knowledge of Linux and how it work regarding hardware.

I am thinking of testing the water again as I really love the feature set of LinuxMCE. I am willing to splash a bit of cash to get some hardware more easy to use as my last setup was slightly under powered.

Would something like this be worth looking at as I really like it's looks:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hiper-HTPC-Media-Center-PC-HMC-2K53A-H2-AMD-64-X2-/230510488910?pt=UK_Computing_DesktopPCs

Coupled with say a AMD Athlon X2 5000+ Dual Core CPU which retail at about £30 and some memory etc...

Just wondered if that would be ok. I just saw that it is a Geforce 6150 which is quite dated but I seem to remember it was quite well supported.

Love to hear your thoughts.

Users / Reinstalled the nvidia drivers now got a problem
« on: November 19, 2007, 11:45:05 am »
Just reinstalled my nvidia drivers as for some reason it reverted back to default the ones.

Now after the dcerouter login i just get a black screen with a flashing cursor.

Tried pressing the numbers to change the resolution and input connection but no look.

Then tried holding shift down when it beeps, it doesn't run the AV Wizard though it just shows the same black screen with flashing cursor in the top right.

Then I tried to replace my xorg.conf with xorg.conf.backup but only got the same results.

I think I may just need to get the AVWizard to run but not 100% on how to force this.

That sound like a way to fix it?

Users / Connecting to my TV/Monitor
« on: November 09, 2007, 05:35:17 pm »
Hi we just got a new Hyundai Imagequest TV which has a whole plethora of connections and is a 32" widescreen system

Im not sure what is the best way to connect my machine up to this new TV to get the best result. At the moment i use the vga cable as it was easiest to get working. However when I watch DVDs or videos that are widescreen there are really big black borders at the top and bottom. I mustn't of picked the correct setup for my TV when I ran the AV wizard.

Heres the connectors that my TV has:

TV-out
Scart
VGA
HDMI
Composite
Analog

My Graphics card has the following outputs:

VGA
DVI
TV-out

Im thinking that a dvi to hdmi will be the best way to connect it up but im not too sure. Also I would like to remove the black borders from some of the TV and DVD/Videos that i watch if possible.

THe interface appears to cover the whole screen nicely unlike films that I play back.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated

Users / Recommend a Remote
« on: November 09, 2007, 10:57:47 am »
Hi guys I was just wondering if people could recommend a remote.

I was trying to get the Hauppauge one that connects to my TV card to work but this isn't that good and some buttons dont work.

I know with some fiddling i may be able to get it to work but I dont have that that much spare time at the moment so it would be easier if i could just but one that just works.

I will also need the receiver. How well do the buttons of a windows remote map to the LinuxMCE software?

I would be interested in seeing what other people are using. The fiire remote looks good but is pricey i was thinking a bit cheaper at first.

Developers / Can I fix the TV Crashing problem?
« on: November 01, 2007, 01:17:23 pm »
Hi there peeps.

I am one of the people who gets the TV to crash when trying to play it through LinuxMCE. It works fine when run through KDE I can watch TV all day long if I wanted but through LinuxMCE it only gets maybe a minute or two at the most.

My question is this:

Would it be possible for me to try and locate the problem and maybe fix it? Im no computer idiot but im no rocket scientist either. I do write the occasional piece of software every now and again in my line of work.

If someone could give me a quick guide as the where the error logs etc are stored I would be most grateful as I really love this piece of software it is truely a wonderful piece of kit and with later releases I can see it becoming very popular indeed. I just want to try and track the error down and maybe see if there is any reason as to why it happens. It just seems like other people have left it for the moment and not got it to work. I dont know if anyone successfully even watches DVB-T television.

I run a Hauppauge Nova-T tuner card on a P4 3.0ghz with 1gig of ram and a GeforceFX 5200 with 128mb of ram.

Im open to all ideas and would love to help any of the people who work on the project in aiding them to fix this problem.

Kind regards and look forward to hearing from you

Matt

Installation issues / Installing via the 2 CDs
« on: October 19, 2007, 10:54:40 pm »
Im a little lost im following the tutorial on how to install from the 2 cd method.

I can only find links to the first CD with the packages there is no link to the other CD is it called the cache? I would really like to do it over HTTP as its easier for me.

There is also a file i see called Linux MCE 1.0 should I really be downloading this?

Any ideas greatly received.

Thought I would save myself some time as I have Kubuntu installed but seems i may be mistaken and should just gone for the DVD

Cheers in advance

Users / Connecting to a TV
« on: May 20, 2007, 01:48:40 pm »
Hi im just trying to connect my media centre to a TV through the S-video connection.

The bios loads up fine and so does the Ubuntu loading display however when it gets off that the resolution/refresh rate seems out of range or something as it is flickering quite a bit and is unreadable.

I have had a go at trying different ones out but to no success. :(

I have also switched the jumper on my ati card from pal to ntsc. The card is a Ati 9550 256mb.

The media centre worked fine through the monitor but no luck through the TV.

Any ideas guys, ive searched the forums but to no luck:(

Thanks in advance.

Users / Which TV Card?
« on: May 07, 2007, 01:37:17 pm »
Hi Im loving using LinuxMCE its great.

I would like to know now which TV card to get, I would like one that receives DVB-T (UK Freeview i think). Im looking at the Hauppage Series as they seem pretty well supported. Any ideas?

I have a usb freecom one lying around but im not sure if this would work I cant see any success anywhere.

I would like to know if i will need to re-format the computer and re-install everything to get it working or can it be added after. Im hoping so but im not sure how to go about it on my system which I have been using for a couple of weeks and loving.

Thanks in advance.

Users / Ripping Failed
« on: April 27, 2007, 11:14:09 am »
Hi all,

Im successfully using my LinuxMCE box now which is great. Its only in UI1 at the moment but I still think it rocks!!

I have however come up with a problem. I am unable to rip and audio CD to MP3 or whatever format it rips to.

It goes through the motions when i click "copy cd" such as where I want to save it to but then a message comes up stating that "Ripping Failed" with no other information as to why this has happened.

I cant eject the CD either after I do this either which forces me to reset the machine.

I see that i need to go into a terminal from somewhere to maybe try debug the cd ripping error. I saw a similar post about dvds and this error. However im not sure how to get into the terminal from my LinuxMCE box? Or could I ssh in from another machine would this work??

So to sum up:

1) My CD Ripping error "Ripping Failed"
2) Ejecting a CD after this error
3) Finding the Terminal

Thanks in advance

Users / Resetting GFX settings
« on: April 24, 2007, 08:49:44 pm »
Hi I recently got linuxMCE installed.

I got it setup ok and ran the setup of the media director from another machine. I ran a dvd and it worked ok out of the box but i accidently pulled the power cord.

Now however the fonts on the main screen do not appear clear at all and the pictures on the screen saver do no move smoothly. Im wondering if i selected too higher setting for the UI i think it was the middle one.

Is there a way to set it to the lowest gfx settings?

Or try debug what is happening?

Thanks in advance im soooooo excited its nearly on there!!!

Any ideas what is going wrong, i want to use this software sooooo badly,
