After many hours trying to install 810 Beta 2 I decided to check the integrity of the DVD and I got "errors found in 152 files" - exactly the same as etNHGfU8 and baberlevi.
I know... I should have done the check first, but hey, who reads instructions?
I assume the problem is in the torrent iso so I am going to try installing kubuntu 810 and then doing the Internet install.

BTW I got the information about compcache here:
http://administratosphere.wordpress.com/2009/07/19/disabling-compcache-in-ubuntu-jaunty-and-related-swap-errors/

and here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/328437/

the instructions for removing it are as follows:
Code: [Select]
To check if one has Compcache enabled run:
sudo swapon -s

If there is a ramzswap in there along with your normal swap settings it means it is enabled. To disable it:

sudo rm /usr/share/initramfs-tools/conf.d/compcache && sudo update-initramfs -u

And restart. Check to see if it is installed by running this again after rebooting:
sudo swapon -s

I had to modify the rm command by replacing the name of the swap directory with the one indicated in my "swapon -s" command.
hope that helps - but maybe for you compcache is not a problem, who knows?

I am in New Zealand - the fishing is great - will be going out from Torbay to The Noises.
Check it out on Google Maps - and weep  :)

Hi Roberto
I spoke too soon above - I am still having no end of problems. But to get a successful install I used the same build - I did not start from scratch after the desktop script failed.
After the reboot I had a command prompt - so I logged on with the userid specified during installation.
Typed startx to get the gui.
Then I opened a browser session and copied and pasted the commands one line at a time from:
http://wiki.linuxmce.com/index.php/LinuxMCE-0810_beta
which go like this:
Code: [Select]
sudo su - #This might ask for the password you specified earlier during the install of kubuntu.
aptitude update
aptitude dist-upgrade
wget -c http://deb.linuxmce.org/ubuntu/new-installer-beta2.tar.gz
tar xvf new-installer-beta2.tar.gz
cd new-installer
./pre-install-from-repo.sh
./mce-install.sh
./post-install.sh
reboot

After that I could go through the setup without a hitch, I configured mythtv watched a bit of live tv, scheduled a recording all looked great.

Then I tried booting my diskless MD to set that up and thats when the problems started.
During the diskless build everything froze and on the server I saw:
"Write-error on Swap-device...compcache: Error allocating memory...."
I googled that and got the instructions for disabling compcache which I did.

However, I suspect that something got screwed because the system keeps freezing and is totally unpredictable.

I am now rebuilding from scratch using the beta1 DVD to build kubuntu.
I am in the middle of upgrading kubuntu - then I will disable compcache before I repeat the internet installation of lmce as above.
Will post results - but it may take a few days cause I am going fishing tomorrow  :)

OK so i used the DVD - it installed kubuntu but the LMCE install script failed.
So I  logged in and ran the commands in the wiki (link provided by Freaky) - took a while but no problems encountered.
I have now successfully installed Beta2  - worked like a charm.
now the fun starts - thanks to all who have helped.

Dom, I have had a problem with the new beta 2 DVD too.
Install kubuntu goes fine, I pick the nvidia driver, reboot, all OK.
Then I click on the LMCE script - it seems to install OK but I get the command not found popup.

(maybe thats a clue - but I ignored it and rebooted as per the instruction at the end of the script)

Then it just boot to the command line interface asking me to login.

Didn't have time to investigate further but I will watch this thread and add to it if I can.

Update:

No luck with my network dropping problem or my IN-ADDR.ARPA issue but I saw a write error on the swap drive - flashed past as I watched the syslog while the ubuntu PC was watching a movie online - ie generating traffic through the gateway.

I have assumed this is my problem so have bought a new 500G disk and downloaded the new beta2 iso and am starting again.
Will post any interesting experiences in a new thread.

Thanks to all who tried to help....

I have swapped the eth0 and eth1 around using the button on the network settings page of the web admin. Also swapped the cables around. ifconfig confirms that I now have eth0 on the outside as per the instructions.

I will have to wait to see if this solves the problem. However, I am still getting those named[5498] errors in the syslog on my LMCE hybrid.
Also - I have just noticed that the Internet address that seems to be giving the problem is a mirror image of the Ubuntu machine's address.
ie 192.168.80.130 seems to be trying to access 130.80.168.192

This error is happening about every second when I am generating any traffic.

Are there any clues in this?

thanks anyone,
Charlie

Pete thanks for the reply. I have not configured any MDs yet - just the Hybrid machine itself. I have two linux (ubuntu) and one vista and an old Tivo. I have not loaded any media - I am just trying to get a stable network before I continue.
Chris - I have seen reference to the fact that you have to have eth0 as the external facing card but I have never seen a reason given for this so I figured that since my installation works (kind of) perhaps that was just necessary for some hardware configurations. I will swap them around tonight and see if it helps but it would be good to get confirmation that this is what is causing my problem.
cheers, Charlie

Hi and thanks to everyone who has contributed to this amazing project.

I have been running a 710 hybrid for over a year now - it has proved to be a totally reliable gateway, DHCP server and firewall as well as a media server for all the PCs around the house.

A few weeks ago I decided to install the beta 810. Everything appeared to go smoothly - I read everything I could on the forums and wiki and followed all the instructions and it appeared to pay-off.

After a few hours however, all the PCs in the house lost internet connectivity. After many frustrating days I have determined that the gateway seems to stop working after a certain amount of traffic has passed. If traffic is low it will last up to 4 or 5 hours but if I download large files or watch movies online then it will crap out sooner.

All my hardware is exactly the same as before in my very stable 710 system.

This output from ifconfig shows my network card setup:

Code: [Select]

I have noticed a repeating problem in the syslog viewer that seems to indicate one of the pcs on the network may be doing something wierd:

Code: [Select]
2009-11-29 23:33:13 dcerouter named[5498] client 192.168.80.130#59870: RFC 1918 response from Internet for 130.80.168.192.in-addr.arpa

Am I on the right track here? If so, how can I determine what is causing this? Also, why did it all work fine with 710 and when I eliminate LMCE 810 and use my adsl router as a gateway?

Any assistance or ideas would be much appreciated.

many thanks
Charlie.

Rodercot's link solved my problem - the only thing that confused me for a moment is that my DVI connection did not work when I issued the "telinit 1" command and X stopped and I had to plug in a vga cable to get the picture back. Fortunately my EN8400GS Graphics card and my Phillips 220WS LCD monitor have both options. I guess if you are connected to a TV with no VGA input you may have to connect up a VGA screen temporarily.
Thanks for the help Guys and thanks to all who are contributing to this great project.

Thanks Dave for the quick and clear reply - and for the link. I had actually seen that post but also many others with different instructions including the "envy" advice.

It is pretty late here in NZ right now but I will follow all your steps tomorrow and report back.

Users / Trying to get the latest nvidia drivers installed in my diskless MD
« on: September 24, 2008, 12:32:06 pm »
I have managed to get a diskless MD installed but need to upgrade the video drivers cause the graphics sucks and I can't even read the fonts in KDE. I have motherboard: ASUS M2N SLI NVIDIA nForce560 SLI ATX and Graphics card: ASUS EN8400GS Silent 512MB PCI-E HD-TV DVI-I HDCP

There is lots of advice in the forums and wiki on how to upgrade drivers in a core/hybrid (using envy or "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-<version>-pkg1.run" as per the "Display Drivers" entry in the wiki. However, the only reference to installing in an MD is "Instructions for installing the latest nVidia driver on your media directors can be found in the upgrading the kernel wiki."

Question 1. Do I have to upgrade the kernel first or can I skip to the instructions titled "Video Drivers"
Question 2. How do I know the correct name of the driver to download with the wget command?
Question 3. Isn't there an easier way to do this?

Thanks for any help you can give - I am recording all my steps, successes and failures in the wiki under user setups which I hope will be useful to someone in the future.

I have discovered that by setting resolution to 800X600 I can get a usable kde session so if I can install the drivers from there it may be the way to go ??? Using envy perhaps - I have seen this mentioned but do not know if it is recommended ???
