That thought had definitely crossed my mind.  However, the Shuttle box is limited to only two PCI slots due to its small form factor.  I'm using one for the capture card and the other for a second NIC (this was supposed to be a hybrid type setup).  Come to think of it, I could probably go to a USB capture card and free up a slot.  Or build a dedicated core and also negate the need for a second NIC.  Just goes to show that there are always options.  :)

I bought a Shuttle barebones box a while back with integrated nVidia chipset.  Couldn't get the sound or ethernet to work in 7.10.  All my searches led me to understand that my chipset should be supported out of the box.  Installed Kubuntu 8.04 and all worked fine.  So until I have some extra time off, I haven't bothered to fool with it.  Looks like an MCE 0810 would bypass all of this for me.  Guess I'll keep toying around with my other machines and see how this turns out.  Pretty exciting, at any rate...

Found an SB LIVE 5.1 card on eBay for like $7.  If this works, I'll add a second NIC and then pick up an eeeBox for an MD.  Thanks for the help, as always.  Love this concept.  Big thanks to all the people working on it!

Users / No onboard sound card...what next?

Wanting to use my Dell XPS420 for a hybrid.  Unfortunately, I bought this machine before I'd started toying around with Linux and got the XFi soundcard (for which there is currently no ALSA support).  Since I'd upgraded, Dell didn't ship my system with any onboard sound.  Been searching the forums for a list of known compatible sound cards (can use PCI PCIx or USB), but haven't come up with a decent list.  Looking at the Audigy Platinum listed in the Wiki.  Anyone know if the Audigy 2 Platinum works as well (seems like it should from what I read on the ALSA site).  Not really picky about it at this point, just looking for some confirmation on a known good config, or someone who can point me to a list that I've somehow missed.

Cheers,
Ant.

I'm still using a single NIC.  LMCE has setup my ethernet port with the same settings mentioned here:

EXTERNAL_IFACE     eth0
EXTERNAL_MAC    00:1A:92:24:71:BA
EXTERNAL_IP    192.168.0.2
EXTERNAL_NETMASK    255.255.255.0
EXTERNAL_DHCP    0
INTERNAL_IFACE    eth0:0
INTERNAL_MAC    00:1A:92:24:71:BA
INTERNAL_IP    192.168.80.1
INTERNAL_NETMASK    255.255.255.0
GATEWAY    192.168.0.1
DNS1    192.168.0.1
DNS2    192.168.0.1

This should have the system using the same NIC as a virtual DHCP for other hardware in my media network while still receiving an internet connection.  Even though everything looks like it should, I still can't open any web pages.  These same settings work fine on my Windows OS partition.  Anyone know if I need to adjust any other settings after a fresh install to get an internet connection?  I've been successfully setting up networks for quite some time, but this is my first Linux experience.
