I would recommend installing open vpn (http://openvpn.net/) on your core.  this will allow you to connect remotley via a secure tunnel, as though you were plugged into your internal network. I don't know if there are any issues, but it should run on kubuntu, so it is prob ok on lmce.

Hi All,

Sorry for the long delay in my reply (teach me not to pay the phone bill ). Thanks for the replys, I will get this setup now.

I am wanting to keep the two networks separate is mostly down to me using smoothwall and do not want to setup a double NAT (smoothwall is running a vpn connection to a few of the families houses). I just don't like the idea of lmce been my main gateway to the internet, and would like to be able to shutdown without everything else loosing connectivity.

Hi All,

I am just wondering whether it is possible to map (and set to store) data that sits on the other side of your external NIC?

I know this sounds a little silly, but my network is in two segments, 1 is my main PC network (192.168.2.0/24) which my LMCE box external nic connects to. I then have my LMCE network (192.168.80.0/24). All my mds etc are on the lmce side. I do have a large file server sat in my main network. Am I able to map this to LMCE without moving it over?

LMCE automatically looks for windows/smb shares. When you turn on your XP machine, LMCE will flash a message up saying something like:

"Windows Share Found on ip". It will then ask you what you would like to do with the share. One of these options is "Use Linux MCEs Folder structure". It will then ask you for a username and password.

If you selected this option, the videos should show up in the media browser.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't have any spare DVD drives, so I decided to install the system using the Two CDs. I will try the DVD install on another system once I setup MCE properally (still running it as a test system).

Hi radmofo, thanks for the quick reply.

my hardware is as follows:

P4 2.8GHZ
2GB RAM
NVIDIA GCard (not sure on teh one)
running on a simple 120GB IDE HDD

I bought the DVD from the LMCE site, as the only download version I found was on the Fiire site and estimated 52 hours to download hehe

I did find this article : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=292533

It talks about editing grub to point to the correct kernel or hdd. I tried this, to no avail.

I did turn off the splash screen to see if there were any errors, there was alot of rubbish on the screen (looked like HEX code). Any ideas what it might be?

hi all,

i am having problems installing of the dvd (thanks Paul, it arrived the other day).

when it is booting up, it hangs for around 5 minutes on the kubuntu splash screen, and thn frops into Busy Box v1.1.3 and gives the error : "/bin/sh cant access tty job control turned off" i am then given the prompt (initramfs).

im not sure where to go from here, this is the third install and it happens each time. is it a drivers/hardware issue?

You shouldnt need to put a username/password in if you have gave anominous access.

I would probably recommend upgrading the RAM to 2GBs. My core system has 1.5GB of RAM and when i connect one Media Director, it eats that up pretty quickly.

I have LMCE running as the DHCP server in my network. My LMCE box is 192.168.2.2 and my Default Gateway is 192.168.2.1. LMCE gives out the correct IP address. I am guessing this is because it uses it's own settings such as DW, DNS etc.

Hi Guys,

I was just wondering whether there was a minimum spec for the Media Directors. I have seen some hype regarding these nifty devices:

They are a thin client that goes into a wall like a socket. It has the DVI out and a USB port, perfect for them dongles. Is all the processing done on the DCERouter box? Or is some done on the MD?

Thanks for your reply. I will try booting the MD tonight and let LMCE autoconfigure it. What should be setup in the root server IP address? I'm guessing that is the LMCE?
