Title: o2 Joggler - cheap touchscreen orbiter or even MD?
Post by: purps on April 13, 2010, 02:10:49 pm
Couldn't find anything about these on the forums or the wiki, so thought I would ask.

These things are currently going for 50 quid for a limited time - http://yourfamily.o2.co.uk/o2familyjoggler

Just wondered if anybody had any experience of them? Could they be used as an actual MD? I think I read somewhere that it's just an atom board, but don't quote me on that.

Found this blog also in case it is useful to anybody, links to the "HackTheJoggler" forums - http://hackthejoggler.blogspot.com/

Nice lil device, good find....

I would imagine that you could use this as a MD if you can set it up to Network(PXE) boot....
Had a quick look at the Hack page and looks like people have Linux running on it already.

It is nice piece of gear for that price, would be nice to use as a MD or Orbiter!!

Very interesting. As an orbiter guy, was going to order one or two:
'Unfortunately, we are unable to sell to countries outside the UK.' Darn.

The Joggler is a Poulsbo based device platform with some small additions. Given the unique footprint of hardware and OS, it is a bit of a challenge to put alternative OSes on the thing, but doable.

Right now, the issue is that you have to use IEGD to get the necessary drivers for the GPU. The one place I know that has this is the moblin ivi build (for the Congatec ivi kit)...

I do have a Joggler coming to me soon, and will be investigating it from a pure hardware perspective.

Are you talking from the point of view of using this as an MD Thom, or purely as an orbiter?

One disadvantage of this device from the orbiter point of view is that it is only mains powered, which is a shame. Although I guess people would still use it in certain situations?

I've asked on the HackTheJoggler forums if it supports PXE - if not, I don't see any reason why a rom-o-matic'ed flash disk couldn't be used?

I wonder if you could water-proof it somehow, as a low-cost bathroom MD.... just thinking out loud here!

Bah, they're 100 quid again now, should've pulled my finger out and bought one sooner. Oh well, hopefully some cheaper ones will start popping up on ebay over the next few weeks....

I'm currently trying to find out what kind of NIC it uses from the point of view of creating a gPXE image for a flash disk... unless it already supports PXE booting? I should probably find that out first!

Did you get your hands on one of these in the end, Thom?

Yes. cBuckle and I have units. Unfortunately, I will not be able to work on these at present due to far more pressing concerns. I am officially broke, and I need a job, yesterday.

The Joggler is a Poulsbo based device platform with some small additions. Given the unique footprint of hardware and OS, it is a bit of a challenge to put alternative OSes on the thing, but doable.

Does this mean that we couldn't just install the Nokia N800 software on it? The default OS is based on Moblin v1 with BusyBox according to wikipedia.

If not, is it just a simple case of getting Maemo up and running on it via a flash disk and install the N800 software afterwards?

The easiest way to get a basic orbiter on Joggler is to simply build an SDL orbiter by using the MAEMO_NOKIA770 define.  If you have a working builder, this should take minimal effort.  All the needed x86 libs from the core are compatible.

This is what I did, with guidance from Thom.  It's a basic orbiter, like I said, which means no automated setup, etc.

Thanks for the reply. If you don't mind me asking, is there any chance you would consider making a howto for the wiki please? Or give me a simple set of instructions as to how to achieve this, I would be more than happy to test it out and write the howto. I'm sure that a lot of people in addition to myself would benefit from this.

Sure, I'll make a write-up in the wiki for this.

One other important point that I forgot to mention is that I am running Ubuntu Netbook Edition 9.10 via USB flash drive, not the original.

That would be fantastic, thank you ever so much.

I assumed that a secondary flash drive OS might have been necessary. What is the reason out of interest why the original OS can't be used? Too "o2"? (read "constrictive").

I just chose the path of least resistance for me.  Downloading and dd'ing the image to a usb drive is very easy, then I had a familiar environment to work with.  My main concern was dependencies.  I knew they would be easy to meet in ubuntu.  It is, more than likely, possible to make it work in o2 OS (after working around some o2'isms), so feel free to experiment.
