Title: Kubuntu/LinuxMCE Installation with 48" LCD TV/Monitor
Post by: shaman on February 23, 2010, 10:18:10 am
Hi,

I have tried to browse the forum but can't seem to find an answer to this so apologies if it may be a repeat!

I have been using for some time an XP Box running TVersity/Twonky etc as a media server. The box basically uses our 48" LCD TV as a monitor (when we need one). Having come across LinuxMCE recently, and liking what I'm reading about it, as I've considered X10 etc devices previously, I decided to install.

My problem is....During installation, booting from the LinuxMCE DVD and selecting install LinuxMCE from the menu, the screen resolution goes such that the fonts are incredibly small and impossible to read. This is my first Linux installation however; I've been using PC's long enough to second guess the options and muddle through the install, and the Box boots to X but the resolution is still impossible to read.

I did manage to find within X where I can change the resolution, although, as I could not read what I was selecting, the option I chose was NOT supported by the TV and I got a black screen. I repeated the whole progress, and again trying to change....black screen again!!

Could somebody please shed some light on how I may get the resolution, during the installation, so that I can at least read the text.

Thanks in advance :)

What graphics card are you using?

I have an ATI one on my core (because I don't use it as a hybrid, I only have a cheap nasty graphics card to free up the RAM), and I get the same problem you describe. I get round it by simply installing the restricted drivers for the card before I begin the installation, through the kubuntu desktop.
